Title: Father Time is at it again
Post by: ericdavisfan on 06/15/05, 09:04:00 AM
Julio Franco goes 3 for 4 with his 3rd HR of the year and has 3 RBI in a Braves win last night.

A huge DEE-NEE to Julio

It'll be exciting to see Danny Almonte pitching to Julio Franco in a few years.

Great job for Julio, he was slumping a bit there...

Julio Franco stole second base after getting his second single in tonight's game against the Reds.  (His third steal this season in as many attempts).

And now he just... stole... third.   Without a throw, no less.

Oh what I would give to actually be seeing this in person.

Julio Franco is eternal. I went to Denver, and saw a Braves/Rockies game a few weeks back. That dude still smokes the ball. I thought about yelling a drunken RBI quote to him, but I didn't...probably because I wasn't drunk enough.

What would a drunken RBI quote sound like?  I assume you don't mean an actual quotation from the game, since there are none...

Holy shit, he stole second and third?

Wasn't he the oldest man to steal a base before?  I wonder who the oldest man to steal 3b was before Franco.  Some of you statheads (Dryden, Nails, etc) find that out for us...

I've come to realize that while JerryD's posts may be few and far between, he always comes through with good stuff like this one.  Well done.

HOLY SWEET JESUS

Julio Franco has knocked 2 --- TWO! dingers tonight, driving in three of Atlanta's four runs so far.  I am simply giddy.

And this will be my last post for two months.

Glad I could leave on such a note.

Julio is the man even though his 2 bombs were against the Reds.  At this point in the season, my loyalty to RBI is more than that of the Reds so I'm all about seeing Julio do well.

Also, Eric Milton is fucking horrendous.

I love Julio Franco, he's up to .270 now - I have a feeling he's going to hit .300 again this year...

Seems to miss every other game though.  The way he's playing, he should be in there every game...

Last year, he had a decent record, but always gave up a shitload of runs. People liked him around Philly, but I never understood why.

I never liked the fucker. Aslo, he never seemed to get out of the sixth inning

I think once you hit your late 40's, you are justified in taking time off on a regular basis.  Really, though, this standard should apply to all jobs, not just professional athletics.
Title: Re: Father Time is at it again
Post by: ultimate7 on 06/20/05, 11:46:32 AM
I don't think it's his decision, he's just in a platoon, so he only starts about 40% of the games or so.
Title: Re: Father Time is at it again
Post by: Gantry on 06/20/05, 11:52:52 AM
Ah, forgot about the platoon.  The way he's hitting lately, he should at least get some more plate appearances...
Title: Re: Father Time is at it again

I wonder if he will eventually be reduced to a pinch-hit only type of role.  I don't think the Braves will want to get rid of him.  It's sort of like telling yoru grandma that she has to go into the nursing home.  You just ignore the situation until action must be taken (meaning Julio will be on the roster until he dies).

He only hits against lefties. In the game where he had two bombs, he was pinch hit for by (big sexy) Laroche when a righty went into the game.

He was also one of maybe two hitters not used off their bench yesterday in the 11-8 loss.

As of last night, the Reds have given up 106 home runs this year.  Eric Milton is responsible for most of them.  He's a generous individual

Wow, Milton has already given up 25 homeruns this year.  Looks like he's on pace to break Bert Blyleven's record of 50 in a year.

I'm glad the Reds went out and got themselves an ACE to anchor their pitching staff in the off-season.  Who knows how bad this year might be if they hadn't bolstered their pitching.

When I was at GAB for the Rijo/Eric Davis Reds HOF induction, the crowd went nuts when Rijo threw out the first pitch.  Mainly because he threw a strike!

Julio Franco, 1B ATL

News: Julio Franco (virus) missed his second straight game on Tuesday against the Marlins.

Analysis: Franco remains day to day. Keep him reserved in all larger NL-only daily Fantasy leagues.

...I sure hope he didn't catch anything from MikeD.

Oh yeah, here comes the math minor:

If Franco is the oldest player to hit a pinch-hit HR AND Franco is the oldest player to hit a Grand Slam, therefore Franco is the oldest player with a pinch-hit grand slam....

Actually, half that proof is unnecessary, but that is why I never finished up with my math minor.

Julio's page, note the far right leaders are for after age 41 (41 is as high as BR goes), Julio top ten in many categories and moving up (stats through 2004).  Note that he really didn't play the year he turned 41, so for Julio it's all 42 and over.
