The pitching/hitting was the only good part of the original Bases Loaded (other than the fact that you could get guys to charge the mound).  The fielding was absolutely horrific - everyone moved like they were on skates, balls didn't seem to fall at the right speed - making fly balls really hard to judge - and bounced off the field like they were made of rubber, and they switched the B and A buttons from every other baseball game in existence.

Bases Loaded 3 was fairly enjoyable, however, and endorsed by Ryne Sandberg.  While the lack of season mode was disappointing, it was one of the few sports games that you could actually "beat" - you were judged on how well you played the game (avoiding errors, pickoffs, etc.), and the goal was to play a perfect game and win against an opponent on the highest difficulty level.

i think bases loaded has some good tunes...their background music that sound a lot like RBI's is good, as is the "other tune"...i whistle it in preparation for every baseball season.  the bullpen cart is cool, and i also like saying "PLAY BALL" in an odd fashion, as they do.  the game itself blows, other than the pitching motions (i like the herky-jerky pitching motion) but it's good to put in once a year or so to view all the extras.

I loved RBI 2.

I was a huge fan of Bases Loaded 2 --- bio rhythms, etc made it fun.  The view was odd, but once you got used to it, it was fun.

i actually grew up on RBI 2 instead of the original. my dad bought the game for himself, so I had no choice. diving and jumping is fun, as well as knowing how far your dingers go, but that wont make up for how good the original is.

Baseball Simulator and Baseball Stars were both quality games - the team creation was pretty cool, especially in Baseball Stars where you had to earn money to improve your players.  Baseball Simulator had very RBI-like gameplay, but with season mode, and the computer could be a challenge if you used a regular team against the Ultra Teams (which had better stats and super powers).

Not sure if Little League Baseball qualifies for this list - it had the same quality gameplay engine as Baseball Stars.

There were a lot of crappy baseball games, though - Bo Jackson, Roger Clemens, and the original Bases Loaded come immediately to mind.

I forgot about baseball simulator and baseball stars.  Stars was tough from what I remember.  Simulator was too but too gimmicky with the special features.  I never played Bases Loaded 2 I don't believe since the first was so awful. 

Anybody play Tommy Lasorda baseball?  I have it for Sega Genesis.  Cool game but does take some time to play a full game.  You can do things like shift the outfield which is cool.

The AI was much better for this game than RBI and Baseball Simulator, helped by a few innovations like not having you control every fielder at the same time (you got either the closest guy or an infielder and an outfielder, I think, and the computer took the others, setting up cutoff men and backing you up).  Once you got your team powered up, they could get really good, and the computer would be pretty easy, but you had to beat up on the Lovely Ladies for awhile to get them there.

If you used the other teams, it was a pretty solid game, kind of like RBI with a season mode.  The AI was just as bad as RBI's, though, so I usually made a custom league with one regular team and five Ultra Teams just to make things a little more even.  Another negative of this game was that the computer vs. computer simulations took a long time - several minutes.

I never played Bases Loaded 2 I don't believe since the first was so awful. 

I have also never played 2 - in fact, I've never even seen it anywhere.  You may want to give 3 a try - once you get used to the upside-down fielding perspective, it's a pretty neat game, and the Bases Loaded pitching setup gives it a little more realistic style of game.

i always feel like i needto mention bad news baseball when we discuss other games.  i don't think many people know of this game, but if you have an emulator, look it up.  (i know i've posted it here before too).  i feel it's the best game next to rbi.  the defense is better and the individual players have arm strength and speed attributes.  you can custom pick your allstar team. there's also a complete other league if you hold b on controller two while the opening screen comesup (look it up, i don't remember it exactly, i have the save stat saved for my rom).   so it's a pretty awesome game.  the only thing better would beif there was an editor for it.  the roseters are bigger, and i'm pretty sure it's 12 teams as opposed to 10 in rbi.  i believe the game is ALMOST better than rbi, but i just can't go that far.

I think Roger Clemens Baseball is ok, the made up names are weird, but the season stats are the same I think. Bo Jackson Baseball, that's different. The "GUCCCCCH" sound of the ball hitting the bat, the digitized voices "HE WAS SAFE BY A MILE!" and the animated scoreboards are amusing, but swinging the bat is so slow, it's hard to get the timing down, and I can't remember if you can move the batter around in the box or not, I don't think you can.

Baseball Simulator 1.000 was the shit when I was a kid (well after RBI). I once played a 165 game season using just one team. The watch games take forever, either way you do it. The hitters get so weak near the middle & end that you can only pretty much bunt to score runs, but I was using Detroit.

I just tried Bases Loaded a while back, that game really does suck. Graphically impressive and the sounds are crisp & clear, but it's just too damn hard for me to hit a pitch....

Baseball Stars is the only one I could compare to RBI, I had a friend who had B.S. and it was like the coolest thing.

Major League Baseball has to be the worst of the bunch. It's fun smacking homers, but I dunno, the game is just fucking terrible.  The fielders throw so slow and anything hit to the left side of the infield is always a hit, and all grounders stop on a dime, it's stupid!!!!
