The growing popularity of RBI Baseball must be the cause for the extra push to put Jim Rice over the edge. This is a great day.

I never actually thought that Rice would make it, especially in his final try. That is so awesome! Congrats to Rickey & Rice.
And at least Baines gets to stay on the ballot another year, he got over the 5% required. I dunno about his case for the HOF, but if Edgar Martinez somehow gets in, Baines should definitely too.

Jim Rice finally gets his due. Just cause he was surly to the media is why this took so long. Dawson not in hall is crock of shit. I love the fact that Rock Raines got more votes than Mark Mac. I never liked Rickey Henderson but he does deserve HOF, glad to see it wasn't 100%.
If you really have to debate about whether a guy should get in, then he shouldn't. To me, the Hall of Fame is for the best. No to Andre no to Rice.

i like this approach, but somewhere, 28 voters decided that Rickey Fkn Henderson was not worthy of the hall of fame..so i guess EVERYTHING is debatable to some moron. Barry may not have been on the best terms, but you can make an argument for him being the best player ever. If you can make that argument, it seems like he should get in, even if the first year is a protest vote. The guy was unreal. Peter Gammons was on the Mike Tirico show yesterday and he predicted that as more steroids guys come up for a vote, the voters will ease up on the protest votes and put guys in who deserve it, steroids or not. I'm not sure that will happen, but it's an interesting view from a really smart guy.

I don't see why people are so upset about Rickey getting only 95%. Nobody really gets in unanimously, and a lot of guys will apparently vote against a sure-thing HOFer just for that reason. I guess Babe Ruth didn't get in unanimously, so a lot of people have made it their mission to make sure that nobody does subsequently. The fact that more than 20 guys voted against Henderson kinda shows that this tradition of voting against sure-things has gone a bit far.
Also, a lot of people probably think he was an irritating egomaniac, so that might have done it as well.

2) In the early 1980s, the Oakland A's accounting department was freaking out. The books were off $1 million. After an investigation, it was determined Rickey was the reason why. The GM asked him about a $1 million bonus he had received and Rickey said instead of cashing it, he framed it and hung it on a wall at his house.
3) In 1996, Henderson's first season with San Diego, he boarded the team bus and was looking for a seat. Steve Finley said, "You have tenure, sit wherever you want." Henderson looked at Finley and said, "Ten years? Ricky's been playing at least 16, 17 years."

The morning after the Sox finished off the sweep against St. Louis last October, Henderson called someone in the organization looking for tickets to Game 6 at Fenway Park.
14) The Mets were staying in a hotel less than a mile from Cinergy Field in Cincinnati. While some players walked, most took the team bus. A few minutes after they arrived — again it was less than a mile – the last players off the bus noticed a stretched limo that had just pulled up.
Of course, Rickey emerged from the back seat.
15) A reporter once asked Rickey if he talked to himself, "Do I talk to myself? No, I just remind myself of what I'm trying to do. You know, I never answer myself so how can I be talking to myself?"
16) OK, I know everyone has been waiting for it. Alas, according to both parties involved, it's not true. I wish it were. Heck, both Rickey Henderson and John Olerud have said they wish it were true. But it just didn't happen.
The story went that a few weeks into Henderson's stint with the Mariners, he walked up to Olerud at the batting cage and asked him why he wore a batting helmet in the field. Olerud explained that he had an aneurysm at nine years old and he wore the helmet for protection. Legend goes that Henderson said, "Yeah, I used to play with a guy that had the same thing."
Legend also goes that Olerud said, "That was me, Rickey."
Henderson played with Olerud on the Blue Jays and the Mets.
17) Rickey was asked if he had the Garth Brooks album with Friends in Low Places and Henderson said, "Rickey doesn't have albums. Rickey has CDs."

Turns out the Sox got Henderson a Red Thunderbird and when he saw it on the field before the last game of the season, Rickey said, "Whose ugly car is on the field?"

Rickey Henderson the 1st (and probably only) MLB'er to be inducted into the Hall of Fame who was born on Christmas Day. Born December 25, 1958, EXACTLY 20 years before ME.
I think Billy Martin died on Christmas Day, 1989, I dunno if he's in the HOF.....
Jim Rice also had his greatest season in '78, AL MVP and all that.

When I was growing up, the first favorite player I ever had was Dave Winfield. I remember, maybe at the age of 7 or 8, looking through some of the baseball cards I had of him and glancing on the back to see that he and I had the same birthday. I was so ecstatic I went screaming through the house eagerly showing my parents/brothers.
I think Eck was also born on Oct. 3. Incidentally two players should have been in RBI but weren't...
