If you really have to debate about whether a guy should get in, then he shouldn't.  To me, the Hall of Fame is for the best.  No to Andre no to Rice.

Done

i like this approach, but somewhere, 28 voters decided that Rickey Fkn Henderson was not worthy of the hall of fame..so i guess EVERYTHING is debatable to some moron.  You could cut out 90% of current hall of famers on the basis of being unqualified and I would still say that Rickey being in would be a no-brainer.  soooooo good

skip bayless says one guy told him he thought ricky "dogged it" to much so therefore didnt vote for him.

Dogged it?  Was he supposed to drop and do 20 push ups everytime he hit a pop fly?

if he was dogging it, what could he have done if he was playing 100%?  2000 stolen bases?  3000 runs?  play until he's 60?

i always wished that rickey henderson had played for the white sox at some point...even if he did it at age 44 or whatever.

Leave Skip alone. He only mentioned that some stupid journalist did not vote for Rickey cause he dogged it. Skip is all for Rickey and McGwire to get in the HOF.
I don't recall Rickey ever doggin it? I watched all kinds of A's games, and he never dogged it. He may have showboated a bit (snatch catch and his hr trot), but he was all out.

I hate sports journalists who never played the game. Just hate them. They just don't get it. They should change the voting procedures and let the fans, players, and coaches vote as well.

Also, there is no way in hell Barry will get in. He wasn't exactly on good terms with the media.

Barry may not have been on the best terms, but you can make an argument for him being the best player ever.  If you can make that argument, it seems like he should get in, even if the first year is a protest vote.  The guy was unreal.  Peter Gammons was on the Mike Tirico show yesterday and he predicted that as more steroids guys come up for a vote, the voters will ease up on the protest votes and put guys in who deserve it, steroids or not.  I'm not sure that will happen, but it's an interesting view from a really smart guy.

This is assuming that whoever voted for Jay Bell didn't have enough room on the ballot for Rickey?

Cause, ya know, that absolutely wasn't the case.

One of the guys who didn't vote for Rickey did find room on the ballot for Matt Williams, though.

hey now, matt williams would have smashed the single season HR record if it wasnt for the strike.  and he didnt need any juice

Except that he was mentioned 14 times in the Mitchell report.

for taking steroids in 2002, when he had an injured ankle, and then he retired the next year.

Joe Dirt still around? He was the first to be nice to me and play ribby when I joined dee-nee. Hi Joe!!

Dirts encarserated at the moment...some white collar embezzling money shit.  Hes someone's bitch and wont see free day light for a good 3-5 years.

I'll say hi to him for you in the next letter i send out.
We both know that's not true. If it was you and a couple other Dee-Nee members would figure out how to break him out. By the way I thinks it's "incarcerated" I could be wrong.

Rickey wasnt a dog, just stylish and black.

Watch any of his SB's, hardass headfirst slides with no regard to his body. Amazing he lasted as long as he did.

I think it was tony Gwynn that said Rickey was a freakish athlete.  He never lifted weights. . . . hard core workout routine and diet.

So you are saying that only ex-players should be sports reporters? That would take the quality of writing in American newspapers down to a sub-kindergarten level.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

Nacho

I don't see why people are so upset about Rickey getting only 95%.  Nobody really gets in unanimously, and a lot of guys will apparently vote against a sure-thing HOFer just for that reason.  I guess Babe Ruth didn't get in unanimously, so a lot of people have made it their mission to make sure that nobody does subsequently.  The fact that more than 20 guys voted against Henderson kinda shows that this tradition of voting against sure-things has gone a bit far.

Also, a lot of people probably think he was an irritating egomaniac, so that might have done it as well.

bonny

He was great on Hot Stove last night. Talking about stealing 3rd. Reading pitchers elbows, counting steps etc.

good show

Great reason not to vote for a guy.  These sportswriters just love that little piece of power they have.

Have you ever read the HOF ballot instructions?
