**Editing info from last years tourney/thread.
Tourney is for RBI Baseball(NES/1988) & and original Tecmo Bowl (NES 1989).
Tournament Date: Saturday July 24th at DJs Dugout sports bar & grill in Omaha Nebraska.
See https://www.tecmobowlnes.com/ for details. I need to update the site a bit, but a lot of the info is useful/current.
Tecmo Bowl @ noon, RBI Baseball @ 6PM. Possibly moving those times up by 30 minutes earlier.
Each tourney features a 3 game opening round of group play. Results are used to seed the brackets. Tecmo is single elimination, RBI becomes best of 3 in the final 4/championship.
Top 24 players from group play advance to elimination rounds.
Anyone losing in early elimination rounds plays in consolation brackets. The format ensures every competitor plays in 6-7 games at minimum per tourney.
$25 per tourney or $35 for both; Military ID gets $10 off either price.
Cash prizes to the top 5 players & first place wins a trophy. Also paying out small cash prizes to a few additional consolation game winners.
Mark yourself as "Going/Interested" on the facebook event page for reminders and updates> https://www.facebook.com/events/369272577276369/
This tourney is for RBI Baseball(NES/1988) & and the original Tecmo Bowl (NES 1989). In previous years the event has attracted players from 8 states & a province of Canada. With the early round consolation games all the way to the championship round, you end up facing players at your level in the last 2-3 games of this competition. Important to note as even the inexperienced players have the opportunity to win their final 2-3 games and go out on a high note. Same with the intermediate level players.
The event observes a few game play rules for each tourney.
RBI: 1 starting pitcher per game unless it goes into extra innings.
Tecmo Bowl: Offense may not gain yards when defense pick the same play.
a couple other game play rules are in place, but those are the primary stipulations.

Will definitely give the podcast a listen, great work per usual TbT.
Early May works way better with my schedule than previous years because it's not so close to our yearly wrestling trip. I will be giving strong consideration to attending next year, who is with me? If I went I'd obvious enter the RBI tourney, but not the Tecmo one.
We can turn it into a mini-fest if we can get 4-6 of us attending.
Good to hear Gantry. Mike Beales had some concerns about not being able to make it next April with his job schedule, so I started looking at that early May day. Its not being held on mothers day weekend either FYI. Mike has been a warrior driving out here from Chicago 3 years in a row, with 3 final 4 runs so I definitely want him to be able to make it if possible.
As for not playing Tecmo Bowl, no worries if you want to sit that tourney out, or for a Tecmo Bowl player that wants to not enter RBI. However pretty much everyone in the field is guaranteed 6-7 games of Tecmo or RBI...regardless of how they do. 3 games of group play to begin and some consolation games for those knocked out early in the elimination rounds. For anyone considering skipping either tourney, you will get a full gaming experience of about 3 hours no matter your skill level if you give it a shot. Honestly if you get knocked out early, you basically finish the event playing other guys that aren't very good in the consolation rounds. That gives you a good opportunity to win a couple games late and finish on a high note. Just sayin'. 6th place in Tecmo Bowl this year was just there to spectate and hadn't played in 20+ years. We talked him into playing and he damn near walked out with $25, as he lost the 5th place game by 3 points.
I've got a new cash payout tweak for both tourneys. Next year we're doing the standard payouts for 1st-4th & winner of 5th place game gets paid as well. However I'm going to put a little bit of money on the line going to the players who win 7th place, 9th place game, and perhaps even the 11th place game. Granted those lower placings might only be 10 bucks, but still an incentive to play on.

Seriously considering going to this. I think I'd fall into the Nostalgia/Guy Who Likes to Play category instead of highly competitive, but it sounds like fun.
do it!
I'm officially going. You'll have a competitor from Texas.
Now we're cooking with gas!

Well, youre guaranteed a minimum of 6-7 games regardless of how you do.
My buddy nate is a competent RBI player, but will NEVER be confused with an elite player. However at his absolute best hes pretty formidable and can hang in with the best. He's basically a .500 player at this tourney, however he got in the right group this year, got hot hitting and pitching and went 3-0 winning his group and beat a routine final 4 player in that opening round. He obtained a high seed, and got a super favorable draw in his first elimination game. Next thing he knows hes in the final 8 and matched up with a really solid player(but not a world beater). Nate lost in that round and went into the 5th place bracket. Point being he had expectations of winning 1 or maybe 2 games in group play and things came together for him to have a really fun and exciting 2 hour run while notching one of the biggest wins of his RBI career.
Also we have a fairly large pool of interchangeable players that battle it out for 4th-10th place for example. As long as your competent in the 3 phases of hitting/pitching/fielding you can win some games at this thing, and if things go your way a bit can make a run into the final 4, or at least battle out for 5th place...which at this tourney is not a bad way to end things.
The round of 8 in RBI is pretty epic. 1 game setting for our solid/good players to knock off the great players.
Is there any link to rules? Like team selection, pitching restrictions, how to handle glitches (ball thrown in stands glitch)...anything like that?

I'm sorry, I went to that website 10 times and never saw the menu at the top. Because I'm dumb.
So is the location Bigway Burger, or was that from last year and the site is still TBD?

The 2021 location is DJs Dugout 777 N. 114th street Omaha, NE.
Updates:
See initial post in this thread for links to website with all details, and facebook event page for reminders/updates.
Having talks with DJs Dugout in Omaha for hosting this event. DJs has a chain of very popular sports bars in Omaha.
We have to hammer out a few final details with management. We really just need some backing in terms of DJs helping to promote it via their facebook page to go along with my marketing of the event in Omaha. With the proper support we can push attendance figures up near 30 players per tourney. Considering we supply 15 consoles and TVs, we can still accommodate that crowd and not offset the speed of our format.
I mentioned this to a buddy of mine awhile ago, and he actually asked me about it unprompted when I saw him over the weekend, so I'm thinking there's a pretty decent chance he and I will make it this year. I don't expect to be competitive, but I'm curious just how noncompetitive I actually am.
Awesome, keep us in the loop. Would you do both?
Still definitely considering, the odds would jump dramatically if I can find someone to do the drive with me. Would only do RBI
I would absolutely enter both even though I know I'm WAY out of my league for original Tecmo. I am guessing I'd also be out of my league in RBI but have at least played it more recently, plus I could get my son to practice with me. We do have Tecmo on his Switch (and I'm planning on ordering him the NES controllers), but he's not gonna want to play it much, and single-player can only do so much work in preparing you to play another human.
Why not play with your butler?

I have the passwords to play with any team against any team in the super bowl. That can certainly help you develop your offensive game because the top defensive end drops into coverage at a high speed and somewhat mimics a human defender in pass coverage. Ive used that to help sharpen a few things in the passing game. The average guy off the street typically sucks at Tecmo Bowl. There are certainly wins to be had mopping up against the bottom half of the field if you know a few tricks and can work at them a bit. If we have a field of 20, 10 will not be very good.
I have some great strategy videos I'll link to that will help give you a leg up on the random inexperienced guy off the street. Run defenses 101 is the very first thing I teach. https://youtu.be/3yua2KaCHYU
This particular play list has a lot of good stuff. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNAbVGt_cdo1LqkNV8tKz07C3cDcAzW6v Also the Denver/Cleveland videos vs the CPU will show you how to manage certain pass routes when you have a target running an out route. The basic premise is to use the arrow to get the defender downfield then check down to the wr/te standing byt he sideline for a super safe and easy throw.

I'll absolutely be checking out that playlist. The specific strategy you mentioned, using the arrow to draw the defender to a downfield route in order to leave the checkdown open, is something I'm familiar with from Tecmo Super Bowl. Run defense is definitely going to be an issue for me - it's my achilles heel in TSB as well, and there are a few play designs in that one that even after almost 30 years I don't know how to stop reliably (e.g. the Neal Anderson bottom sweep from the offset I).
Have you considered being less stupid?
No.

TB has absolutes in the run blocking schemes. Shit that only happens a certain way in each instance, so pay close attention to the run defense 101 video. The biggest part about run defense is to under stand the schemes and be able to immediately recognize when you won't be blocked then go and attack. Inexperienced players really pussy foot around because they think a block is coming and aren't attacking that ball carrier. Inexperienced players also suck at taking the proper angles to mitigate yards. Just being sharp with a controller is very helpful.
As for the passing game, the check downs are mega important. Against the random guys off the street, it'll make you look like a pro as you grind on down field flawless vs them. We get some really good TSB players at our TB tourneys, and they properly execute the check downs and it keeps them in the game vs us. Plus we tend to play a lot of bend but don't break vs random ppl off the street. They will throw dumb picks in spite of us not trying to get picks though. A smart player, even if he's not super knowledgeable or skilled will know its wise to take those short check downs and punt for field position if need be.
The thing with TSB and you may know this but there typically is an advantageous position to use on defense against every run. There is 1 run and maybe its the one you are referencing thats tough to stop, but I've noticed the pros will use different defenders to counter my run plays and they usually do a good job after the 1st qtr.
Our 5th/6th place game for Tecmo was against a couple guys who hadn't played in 10 years and at least hung in for a half vs the heavyweights. Point being it doesn't require a ton of skill to at least have a decent run in this tourney.

Beales drives over every year. Another of our regulars from Chicago (Goes by Mort) drives over as well. He and some guys host a monday night retro gaming event at D-men tap in Chicago. He was one of the featured guys on the NFL films Tecmo Super Bowl documentary a few years back. You should hit up D-men tap to get acquainted with that crew. They have a free to enter event coming up in January with some legit cash to the winner. RBI baseball, TSB, NBA Jam, NFL blitz games. https://www.facebook.com/events/2427394107529322/ Its Saturday Jan 4th. They do a ton of streams and play RBI fairly often. Mort stays with us here. He'd probably like the company for the drive over from Chicago.
PS we have 2 cats at the house.
I keep tabs on the D-Men events, it's quality and I've jumped on the streams before. Sperling's place (and where I used to stay) was right down the street.... That said I'm in the burbs during the week and that's a haul plus I simply can't be at bars on a Monday night. Maybe I pop in for the Saturday event though...

Events are harded to run here in fall in Omaha. A lot of places tend to reserve their party rooms during that time for Husker games.
Just switched my Facebook event status from "interested" to "going", which makes this as official as possible.

Might get some serious interest from a couple of those. Bottom line; its work to get people to commit. Will run an Omaha ad here soon. Already getting positive feed back on the flyers posted at DJs Dugout.
Can I pre-pay for a guaranteed slot? Seems like you might have a pretty high turnout, and since I'll likely arrive in the afternoon I don't want it to fill up with ppl doing both tournaments before I have a chance to register (I'll just be doing RBI)

TBT DO YOU HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE REGARDING CORONAVIRUS?
If coronavirus wants to play me in Tecmo Bowl, I'll fuck it up like car crash. Otherwise, no.
However Omaha is home to a bio containment center and the CDC run tests. We get Ebola and coronavirus people transported here. Omaha don't coast.
Octofranco is in and he's from Georgia. So...we got 10 states represented, and the province of Ontario will have at least one of the Canadians. I think turnout is gonna be pretty stout this year.
TbT let the participants know the other day that he's officially postponing the tourney, probably until July or August, which made me feel guilty about glibly asking about his coronavirus plans even though he said he does not blame me.
Sucks, but definitely the right call
Gantry, this gives you more time to arrange your travel plans for Omaha.
Except of course July/August is my family reunion and the Olympics.

Cross Olympics off your schedule. Told you so.
The 2020 Tecmo and RBI tourney was held over the weekend. The RBI tourney was easily the most entertaining Tecmo or RBI tourney I've ever been apart of. Only had 11 players spread out in 3 large rooms, a warehouse, and 2 TVs/systems set up outside under a tailgate tent. With the odd number of players it added an extra stanza of group play games. Most of the players had played their 3 games already and could hang out and watch the last few games. We recorded some of the games, so it led to some players watching the last few innings of a game before it was their turn to be on the stream station. Same with the opening round of elimination games, as half the people were waiting for their opponent to advance.
With the majority of the players knowing who the top competitors were, we knew which games to focus on if we had down time. We had a ton of extra innings games and some very surprising results. Usually everyone is just playing, but to get to watch your fellow competitors take part in extra inning games and having a rough idea how the seeds would be impacted as you watched it unfold made it more fun.
Had these poster made for the event.

Mark Bridges won the Omaha tourney last year. He'd also won Dirt's Columbus Ohio tourney and one of Beales tourney in Chicago. Finished 4th in another Beales tourney. He got a resume. Also on hand was Victor Lipari. Victor won back to back Omaha titles in 2017/2018 going 18-0. Last year Victor lost the deciding game 3 of the championship to Bridges. Would they play again in the title?
Nate Nate Nate has gotten better at RBI in recent years. He knocked off Beales last year and went 3-0 winning his group. This year he was 2-0 and facing Bridges with the winner getting a high seed. Surely he wouldn't beat Bridges? Nate won 1-0. Bridges went from overall 1 seed to the 4th seed and had to play his Brother Vaughn in the round of 8.
For the 2nd year in a row I had Victor in my group and I beat him both times. I got out of group play with the overall 1 seed. Not bad for a couple Tecmo Bowl players.
Mark had to go extra innings to beat his brother...and the whole room was rooting for Vaughn. I rolled through my first 4 games without allowing a single run. Bridges crushed me in game 1 of our best of 3 in the semi finals. I lost 2-0 in game 2. Victor swept Nate setting up a championship rematch from last year. Bridges won game 1; 4-1 with NL beating Boston. Victor won game 2 in the Houston/STL match-up. Victor won game 3 as NY over SF by a score of 3-1 to win the title.
Nate beat me for 3rd place. Nate said he won 3 games Saturday 1-0 where he only had 2 hits, but hit a solo homer and shut out the opposition.
More info & pics coming soon.
Heres the top performers from the 5 years of this tourney.

Victor and I (Brad) have been in 4 tourneys. I sat out the 2nd year because we were having NES issues and I wanted to be available to deal with any issues.
Beales & Curt have played in 3.
Judd & Randon have played in 2. Both missed this year, but will be back in 2021.
We've had some others play in 2 or 3, but don't have a notable record. Nate's record the last 2 years is 8-3. However he was something like 2-6 the 2 years prior.
Player finishes from list above.
Victor: 1st place 3 times, & 2nd place
Mark: 1st & 2nd
Brock: 1st place
David: 2nd place
Brad: 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th
Beales: 3rd, 4th place twice
Randon: 4th & 6th
Judd: 2nd & 6th
Curt: 3rd, 4th, & 6th
Mark posted a 9-1 record last year. Droped 3 games this year with group play lose to nate and then the2 games in the championship.
As mentioned earlier, Victor won his 1st 18 games over 2 years. Went 7-3 last year. 7-2 this year.

The pic below has us watching Mark and his brother in an elimination game. At this point there were 2 or 3 other games going on elsewhere between low seeds. This was the game that was everyone wanted to see as we were hoping Mark would lose. Especially me as I'd face him in the final 4.

As for Tecmo Bowl. Nate and I played in the opening game. I won 16-10 with Chicago over Denver to get things started. Nate and I met again in the semi-finals. I called Indy vs SF, and he took 9ers. I was in a horrible spot early in the 4th, but managed to get a stop, force a punt and got the ball with 50 seconds at my 20 trailing 7-6. Indy is a tank of an offense that grinds out 5-7 yards a play and rolled down for a soul crushing drive and field goal at the gun. Nate lost championship games vs me in Houston & Rochester MN, and now 2 semi-final games to me in Omaha. 4 loses by a total of 13 points. Thems the brakes!
Ben who beat me last year in the Omaha championship had far less adversity to face to get to the title game. He won his semi game 20-0 over a pretty solid player that was new to our tourney. The guy he beat (Marc) actually holds the records for points scored vs the CPU in a game of Tecmo Bowl with 119. I played Marc and won 24-3 during group play. Marc's a stout player for someone off the street.
Rematch time. Ben wins the toss and calls Seattle vs New York. Tough call but I take Seattle and player 1. First drive gets me inside his 20 but stopped on downs. 2nd drive I get in the endzone for 6 and hit the extra point vs LT. My offense was shut down in the 2nd half, but I managed to keep NY's offense in check, not give up any huge plays. Ben eventually runs out of time and gets picked off with a desperation throw inside my 20 at the gun. I win 7-0, winning 4 of the 5 Omaha Tecmo Bowl tourneys and 11 of 12 overall around the US... 8 cities encompassing 7 states.

Omaha Tecmo records.

Brad: 1st place 4 times, 2nd
Ben: 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th
Cam: 2nd & 3rd
Derek: 2nd
Mort: 2nd & 4th
Nate: 3rd twice & 4th twice
Mark: 5th
We've had a few others get into 4th & 5th place through the years but they end up with a 4-3 record and get stomped in all their loses against elite players.

Thanks. The first goal of all this business was to have a safe environment. The building is huge, we wedged open the doors, had fans moving air out to the warehouse, and the warehouse has a big rooftop ventilation system sucking air up and out the roof. With all the protocols in place I felt good that we wouldn't have a covid infested office.
A few times for 15 minutes we'd have a gathering in the big 40 by 30 foot room of 6-8 people to watch a big game. That room in the video was one of 2 main airflow passages with a door to the outside. Then everyone would disperse back to their gaming area elsewhere or play outside. There were a lot of masked people. People would get mask fatigue and remove them for a bit in the bigger areas, then put them back on to play thier opponent.
With Tecmo I still have a major drive to dominate and keep winning. Some of my training regimens are a bit tedious, and I gotta find the motivation a week or two out to put in the work to be sharp in the passing game though. My wife will help me with a few specific match up things or situations to prep for. I'm 70-1 at tourneys. 100 wins ain't that far away! If I won most of em, that's like 5 more tournaments. Still bugged by the one that got away.
RBI is truly the fun tourney. Way less pressure, less expectations. The goal is the final 4., but round of 8 and a run at 5th is good too. That's the ceiling really. Shit don't even start in Tecmo Bowl until the final 4.
So pissed that I wasn't able to do this - it's among my biggest "fuck you coronavirus" items.
Haven't gotten around to the RBI portion of the tourney, but here are some Tecmo Bowl videos. Sorry, but a Tecmo Bowl player has his priorities.
I had a lot of fun putting thee game intro together with the old NFL on CBS pre-game music.

we had a revelation during the RBI tourney. In years past, I always had a spare player on hand who could sit in for just 1 game to give us an even amount of players for all the groups.
Didn't have that with the RBI tourney last year. That meant 1 player had to sit out during each of the 3 games in the opening round. That created a 4th round of games, which gave everyone 20 minutes of downtime during group play to go and watch a game. Considering the regular already know who the top players are, you could spectate for the best game available during your time off.
Especially good when you're off for the final game of group play and know what seeding implications are on the line.
Nate(2-0) and Mark bridges (2-0) faced off in the 4th round of group play with the winner getting an easy path to the final 4. Outside of the 4 playing elsewhere, everyone was watching their game. Added a nice spectator aspect to the event. Usually you're just locked into your games and not knowing what is going on elsewhere.
Have you done any planning for a tourney this year? If so, are you thinking of going back to spring, or keeping it in the fall?

If the tourney is run between October to the middle of November, I am 99% to show up and win the whole fuckin' thing in RBI.

Starting to put together some new signage for the 2021 event. Rough draft of the 24 X 36 posters I'm re-doing for this year. People loved these last year, but these are much better. I'm probably going to pixelate the baseball cards and the football players to give it the 8-bit feel.

Doing a 24 X 36 rules & info board with Tecmo below. RBI will get a separate one, as team selection process is a little different and covers a few gameplay rules. I used to print and paste a bunch of stuff on a big sheet. These will look great when completed.

I'll look into. The spring/summer date gives players an outdoor option to come play. However with the vaccine, most anyone who wants it should have it by late summer and perhaps most everyone would be fine playing indoors.
The RBI poster is great, I wouldn't change a thing.
BUMPST. we are on for July 24th in Omaha Nebraksa. See below.

Gantry is busy.
He has plans watching the Olympics.
As it is written, "Where two or more are gathered in his name, it is a Dee-Nee Fest."
"his" in this case can be either Gantry or Kent Hrbek.
Getting ready to proof and send files in for the 24 X 36 procedure, team selection, and rules boards.
I'm super excited about these. Smaller sheets with the basics on rules, and starting pitchers, etc will be at each gaming station.

Getting confirmation soon, and looks like we'll be able to offer $70 a night rooms at Days inn a few blocks from the venue. For that price I might have to stay there and not have to drive all the way across town.
Did a preliminary head count yesterday and we already have close to 20 players for both tourneys at this moment.
The DJs Dugout crowd will add to that. Hopefully we can push it up to about 26-30 players. Get a steady stream of spectators and it will have a "big time" feel to it.
The larger size tourney actually helps the competitive level as its spreads out the elite players in group play, so no one has a murders row to deal with there. Also opens the door for a non elite player to get one of the top seeds and possibly pit 2 elites in a round of 8 match-up. Some easier paths to a high finish can open up with more players/groups.
Equipment check! Got another 12-15 controllers sitting around.

I played a practice game last night with Ben - it was the first game I've played against an actual human in years. It turns out that years and years of mostly playing against the CPU have trained me to swing at basically everything (I told him to aggressively try to strike me out), and by the time the cartridge glitched and we had to reset, he'd struck me out 15 times in 7 innings. We'll see if a few more practice games are enough to get me from "hopeless" to merely "terrible" before Saturday.
You're in Beefy?
I assume I am going to lose fairly spectacularly, but yeah, I intend to participate in both tournaments, and I just got the hotel booked. I think I've talked Ben into coming to Omaha to keep me company but so far haven't talked him into actually joining the tournament (he's never played Tecmo but I am trying to see if he'll play RBI).
Holy shit that's awesome.
I've been meaning to go basically ever since TBT started holding them (it's only about three hours away) but hadn't been able to do for one reason or another, and last year COVID hit just as I was trying to get a hotel booked - I had a buddy who was going to go with me but wasn't able to go this year, so I'm roping in my son as a travel buddy. My family wasn't ready yet COVID-wise for last year's August reschedule (noting that TBT ran that thing as carefully and responsibly as possible, so absolutely no qualms with that), but I wasn't going to miss it this year.
I do plan to get out there one year - this time it's during the family reunion and usually it's right after my return from Mexico and NCAA Wrestling Tournament 1/2. So the timing is never right but I'll make it happen.
Beales and NATE NATE NATE playing a warmup game. Nate had Orosco throw four innings.
YES! That a big ass DLP TV on the table there?
TBT has done an absolute metric shitload of work - there are stations set up for up to 30 players at a time tomorrow (including a couple big DLP TVs). He and Nate and Beales and the other guys I've met are all terrific folks, and I'm really looking forward to the day tomorrow.
Also, we were presented with gifts for helping with the setup...
this thread has "fuck yeah" written all over it
I can confirm that NATE NATE NATE and Beales are indeed good shits
2-1 in group play... eating now before knockout stage.
GODDAMMIT... I won my first game easily, then was the underdog in the 4-5 match-up. Tied 10-10, ball inside the 10, I went for it on fourth and one rather than kick, hoping to ice the game with a TD, and he picked my play then drove 85 yards to kick the game winner as time expired.
I feel a little better about the quarterfinal game - the guy who beat me also beat TBT and is about to play in the finals. TBT for 3rd and I finished in 6th, losing the 5th place game 3-0.
NATE NATE NATE = CHAMP CHAMP CHAMP
0-2 in RBI so far. I swing at absolutely everything and have a lot of trouble scoring.
Bridges just got upset in the quarterfinals by a new guy who also beat me for 5th in the Tecmo tourney. Beales and repeat winner Vic remain alive in the semis.
Victor Lipari won his fourth Omaha RBI title in five years, sweeping Mike Beales in the best-of-three final series (and finishing the tournament 9-0). He was one out from the title when Beales got a solo shot from Wally Joyner to tie it, but then Vic walked it off with a Roy Smalley drive off the wall to plate the winning run in the 10th.
Pic with the guy who did some AMAZING work organizing this whole thing.
Reading this thread made my heart happy, glad the tourney was a success!
I swing at nearly everything too Beefy, even if I tell myself don't swing, don't swing, I almost always do anyways.
Gantry, what do you do in Mexico? Work thing or vacation?
FUCK YEAH NATE NATE NATE!!!
I spend my winters there and work my normal schedule remotely. Good way to do it...
This is so cool. Great pic too, you handsome fkrs
I cannot say enough about how cool the experience was and how great a job TBT did in putting it together. It was a really interesting mix of super-competitive folks and Filthy Casuals like myself, but while the cream eventually rose to the top, it was a LOT more competitive than I expected. NATE NATE NATE won the Tecmo title, but he went to overtime in his quarterfinal game, against a guy who only beat me 3-0 (and I blew a couple scoring chances on a bonehead interception in field goal range and a scrambling screwup that cost me 10 yards in my last-ditch drive at the end). The heartbreaker I lost thanks to my questionable coaching decision was to the eventual runner-up - the guy beat TBT, who's probably the most consistent top-tier player on the planet.
I lucked out a ton in the group play in Tecmo - NATE, TBT, and a guy named Ben were probably the consensus top three coming in (Ben was the only other player with a previous title), and I was in a group that included none of them (I am unsure whether it was luck of the draw or TBT was being kind to me). Ronnie and Jerry, the new guys who got 2nd and 5th, were also in other groups. Because of that, I managed to go 2-1 in group play and snag the 5 seed, so I got a super-easy matchup in the round of 16 before losing to Ronnie in the quarterfinals.
I felt way more confident about my RBI skills than Tecmo (not that I've played a ton of competitive RBI, but thanks to Dee-Nee I know the game and rosters well, and I hadn't played original Tecmo in eons), but I think the competition was a lot tighter top-to-bottom. I went 1-2 in group play, but I only lost 2-0 to Vic (the eventual champ), and he won both his other group games 2-1 (including one in 14 innings; it didn't seem like he was sandbagging). Vic and Beales were definitely the best players there and deserved to be in the title game, but they never seemed unbeatable, and the upsets in the knockout rounds seemed earned, not just flukes. And in the RBI bracket, there were not many easy games - my 5-12 matchup in Tecmo was a laugher that I won 24-0, while in the RBI bracket the 12 seed pulled off a first-round upset.
Great recaps by Beefmaster. BTW, Beefy was super awesome. Funny guy! Looking forward to hanging out with him again.
RBI Baseball recap. Victor and Mark Bridges had gone the distance and given us 3 game series in the championship the last 2 years. They had split those championships. They were on a path to meet in the final 4 this year, but Bridges got upset in the super dangerous round of 8(single game elimination). Dangerous for the elite players as that's virtually the only round where a solid player has a chance to pull off the upset. Its best of 3 in the semi & championship. Historically the lesser players always get swept in those rounds. Bridges also has tourney titles in Columbus at a Joe Dirt tourney and in Chicago at Beales tourney. Not sure his overall record, but hes got 3 titles, and a 2nd place, a 5th and maybe a 3rd or 4th between the 3 locations.
Beales had attended 3 times before and always got swept in semi finals by eventual champ Victor or Bridges. He finally reached the championship round this year, but got swept by Victor. I think Victor has swept Beales 3 straight times in late rounds. Beales is model of consistency. Joe Dirt says Beales is really good at all 3 phases, but perhaps not elite at any single area. Beales, Bridges & Victor typically win their groups as well in the opening round.
Fun fact about Victor: Vic improved to 41-5 in RBI at this tourney winning 4 of the 5 times he's attended. Dropped like a 5-0 game to Bridges in series clincher in 2019. Of his 5 total loses, 2 came vs me in group play! The other 3 vs Bridges in the championship rounds. I damn near got him one year in the round of 8, but surrendered a homer in the 9th while I was leading to get the loss.
Bridges steam rolled to 5th place smashing his next 2 opponents.
Ronnie Kruger dropped a game 3 vs Beales in the semifinals, then won the 3rd place game.
Ronnie as some of you may recall, got news that his mom died during Joe Dirt's tourney in 2006(?). Solid player. New attendee from Iowa City named Jerry knocked off Bridges in round of 8, then got worked in semi-finals vs Victor. Jerry Lost to Ronnie in 3rd place game.
We had a couple guys that were typically fixtures at making at run at 5th place, or even sneaking into the final 4 from Kansas and Iowa. They laid a major egg this year opening things up for other players. Generally this tourney from 4th-12th is super competitive. Seemed to be more of the same this year.
Tecmo Bowl recap. NATE NATE NATE in his 9th tourney finally broke through for the title. He's attended Houston, Des Moines, Rochester, Green Bay & 5 Omaha tourneys with a litany of top 4 finishes. His resume is now: 1st, 2nd(2x) 3rd(3X), 4th(2x), & 5th place with a 41-11 all time record at 9 tourneys.
Nate snuck by new comer Jerry in the round of 8 in a game that was shockingly competitive. When it got to OT, I thought Nate was gonna lose by a FG. Then he got by Ben in the semi-finals. Ben was the only other player to win Omaha besides me. Nate was able to take control in the 2nd half vs Ronnie to win the title. If Nate had lost in the round of 8 vs Jerry, it would have been a major catastrophe for him. He REALLY needed this one! :D He might have sworn off Tecmo, especially if Ben won again.
Ronnie Kruger and I have some Tecmo experience vs each other. We split 4 games back in 2006 at Dirt's tourney. I kept in touch over the years. A few years back went 4-1 vs him with a couple really comfortable wins and a close win in the mix when I was in Louisville KY for work. I knew he was good enough to beat one of the top players, but not likely to win multiple games. He lost to Ben in group play and Nate in championship, and got by me in the semis.
I faced Ronnie in the final 4. he called Dallas vs Seattle. I took Cowboys. Herschel Walker had a great game with jukes. He called a great game especially on 3rd downs. I was up 7-3 early 4th facing 3rd & goal from the 5. TD and the game is over. He picked my play, I settled for a FG and 10-3 lead. He went on a long drive to tie after a big kick return. Similar fate Beefmaster had. I won the toss in OT, but stalled at like the 40. Ronnie avoided pass play-picks and QB run a ton to get the win in OT. I rebounded to beat Ben in 3rd place game. To avoid OT vs Ben, I needed a 4th and goal playpick.
Sucks to lose. Wife was far more devastated than I was. I've won so much by playing my ass off being perfect at all times in the face of every damn thing. Eventually shit's gonna catch up to you. I played pretty damn well vs Ronnie, but he was really on with his play calls at key times. I just couldn't separate enough as a result. In 14 tourneys that was the first time I didn't reach the championship. Ran my Tecmo record to 83-3 in 14 tourneys in 8 cities/7 states with 12 championships, along with 2nd & 3rd place. Played in some big tourneys out east with a couple 32 and a 40 player field. Average size is about 20 players though.
I still don't feel too bad about the loss. Outside of like 1 mistake on defense that I can think of, I played really well. I got him to a 4th and 5 on the last drive and just couldn't catch him in a play pick for the win. Same deal when I lost the 2019 Omaha Championship. Got Ben into a 4th & 5 on the last drive and missed on the playpick. You play enough games your going to run into some stuff that's beyond your control. Ben had a good showing beating Ronnie by like 7-9 points in group play, and nearly getting by Nate in the semis & losing to me in the 3rd place game. Ben is now 31-7 at 6 tourneys in Omaha/Green Bay with 1st, 2nd(2X), 3rd, 4th, 5th on his resume.
Back in the day I went through everyone in the championship games with Nate/Ben/Both Canadians/and the local guys I faced in Cincy, Columbus, & Pittsburgh. Lately Ben was the main guy as I faced him in 3 straight title games.
4 of us are going to Green Bay in Sept for a Tecmo tourney. I'll get to prep for the games and not have to worry about running the thing and taking care of every little detail. Hopefully I can roll in really sharp. GB is a double elimination tourney with somewhat random seeding of the bracket. Its on the heels of a Tecmo Super Bowl tourney earlier that day. The TSB guys don't know all the ins and outs of TB, but the skills tend to translate well enough to TB. The top TB players will find themselves in an occasional battle with the TSB guys. That will be interesting to see if one of us loses a game vs the TSB guys. I did last year vs a TSB guy, and smoked him in the rematch a few games later. I had 1 other tough games vs a TSB guy, but pounded my opponent in the championship games. The year before Nate, Ben, and I all had a close game vs a TSB player.

(internet hugs)
The fact that elite-ish play keeps the games extremely low-scoring is something I wasn't entirely prepared for, but I think it evened out the playing field a lot more than I expected. Other than the game with casual guy that I whooped in the Round of 16, I didn't play a single Tecmo game where a team scored more than 13 points, and most of the games I played or saw were within a single score. I lost by a field goal to a guy who beat TBT and a guy who took NATE to overtime, which suggests to me that if I played well, I could at least hang with the big boys and have a puncher's chance if they made a mistake.
Same thing in RBI - I did poorly, but three of my four losses were largely because I recklessly tried to squeeze an extra couple batters out of a gassed pitcher. I have no idea how anyone ever scores a damn run in 2SP RBI, because as much as I know that I can't hit for anything, even the elite guys strike out a TON against fresh pitchers. Again, it's very clear to me that I'm not as good as the elite players, but I pitch and field well enough that I should generally be able to keep the game close and hope for a lucky hit against a tired pitcher.
The amazing thing about Vic was that he almost never makes a mistake. He doesn't generally score a ton of runs, but I don't know if he gave up more than two runs in a game during the whole tournament. He's basically mastered RBI pitching and defense.
are you saying he COULD beat that one guy's boston?
At the very least, we established at the tourney that I could not beat Vic's Boston (his go-to matchup was Bo-NL, and I chose NL).

RBI Baseball is usually super competitive for players 1-12. I've been to 16 Tecmo tourneys in 8 cities/7 states. Generally Tecmo is a blood bath with elite vs the everyone else, but this year some really strong 2nd tier guys had great showings. Some of that is clearly their skills, and some of it is just unusual circumstance. It made for a memorable tourney.
For the most part I tend to keep the top players separated in group play in both tournaments. I randomly mix in the rest. Just by chance you landed in a group without the 3 of us.
I don't know how much you used the cheat sheets I sent you, but the run defense stuff and the base pass call defense info goes a long way to minimize giving up big plays. Really slows down the middle tier players offense. Just using the base run defense works wonders vs the bad players. Against the top guys, with a bit of playcall luck the cheat sheet calls can go a long ways to prevent a slew of huge gains. Next year you'll probably find a game against one of us. You'll notice a step up in offensive ability compared to Ronnie or Jerry.
Ronnie is an extremely solid player. In his losses he played fairly close with Nate and Ben losing by about 10 in each game. Mark Bridges(big time RBI player) had a similar run a few years back. However its rare for an outsider to not get blown out at least once when facing multiple top players. I'm always impressed when a guy like that plays multiple good games vs us.
I've been trying to get Ronnie to come to Omaha for years. He QB ran against me a ton. He did the same with Nate. IMO QB running is the great equalizer for a lesser player. Ronnie knows we ball hawk on defense and I believe he's not quite confident in his skills to throw into tight windows very often. Since Nate, Ben & I are used to seeing that defense we confidently air it out. Ronnie on his late game drive against me did a great job avoiding my pass play calls, taking some safe wide angles with QB running, and just not making a mistake in order to tie it up late. There's a reason I've wanted him in Omaha to raise the bar of the competition. Unfortunately came at my expense.
Nate had told me that Jerry in the round of 8 had picked his play at an unbelievable rate in the first half of their game. Like a 5 out 6 clip in the first half, and Nate was unable to move the ball. Occasionally that happens, but its unsustainable and you roll em offensively in the 2nd half. However in the 2nd half Jerry continued with at least a solid 40/50% clip according to Nate. :D Just impossible to do much with that. I believe Ben had a semi comfortable win against Jerry, but knew he had some serious game.
Omaha is the top TB tourney out there. Typically we feature 3-4 elite players, a usually at least one "super 2nd tier" guy. Couple that with single elimination after group play and its a brutal event.
I've been to 3 events in Green Bay which I think is the 2nd hardest TB tourney to win. They do a long format Tecmo Super Bowl tourney during the day followed by a double elimination Tecmo Bowl tourney. Beef you should go with us to that some year. Really good Tecmo Super players intuitively have a lot of the in game ability and mechanics down. They don't know all the inner working Tecmo Bowl tricks, but they have serious game. They tend to push us pretty hard. However the double elimination format gives you room for error. I've won all 3 I've attended there. Had Ben with me once, and Nate twice. Those TSB guys are some serious hurdles and there is a lot of them that will play in the TB tourney. Green Bay definitely has a much deeper field with the 2nd tier level of player.
Lets talk about Nate Nate Nate.
So.... about 10 days before this tourney his wife told him she wanted a divorce, and her move out date was on a sunday...the day after this tourney. A couple days before the tourney a friend and co-worker of his committed suicide. This friend had been to a couple of my tourneys and a while back had planned to be in attendance. Nate played with a pretty heavy heart that day. His resume was filled with close loses in the semis and championship. He was clearly due to win one of these as he'd come up short in 8 previous attempts. If forces in the galaxy/cosmos conspired here to not allow me to win that one, thats OK.
Nate did win the coin toss in his final 2 games at Omaha and got to call his "uber favorite-loves his chances with either team" match-up (Seattle vs Miami). I think he was destined to win that day. Make no mistake I'd have been perfectly fine beating him head to head in another title game, had I got there. :D
I got 2nd place a few weeks later to Ben in a 16 player online league primarily filled with really good TSB players. I was on a streak now not winning 2 tourneys in a row, which I haven't faced in the last 5 years.
Then a month ago Nate and I went to Green Bay for that double elimination tourney. We played in the final winners bracket game. I got in a 9-0 hole and fought back to tie, but lost in OT. Nate was in a great spot here as it would require him to lose twice in a row for him to not win this tourney..
I got a fairly comfortable win in the loser bracket final to get back to play Nate. Nate won the toss and got to call his favorite match-up: Seattle vs Miami. However I rolled 17-6 to force a 2nd game. I got in another 9-0 hole in the finale but fought back to tie with a FG at the gun. I won the overtime coin toss and got the ball first. On the opening drive of OT I marched down for a field goal to take a 3rd straight Green Bay title.
And best of all, the 2022 Omaha tourney will be the subject of a documentary! The RBI tourney will get a little exposure, but the film maker loves Tecmo and will focus on that. See the teaser video below.
https://youtu.be/qFKHt8VX75o
Nate, Ben, and I have already done a a pretty long sit down film session. The film will culminate with the 2022 tourney and crowning the champion.
I have a loooooong list of Tecmo related bookmarks on twitter. Many were from notable sports personalities that enjoy(ed) Tecmo Bowl. I used to mail tourney promo packets to them about previous tourneys. I went through my bookmarks and had a laundry list of names to give to the producer. Guys from ESPN, NFL network, cbs sports, etc, etc. Most everyone he contacted responded favorably and wants to be part of the project. A few will even play in the tourney.
Additionally CJ Wallis (Forty FPS) is in the final stages of finishing his Jim McMahon documentary. Its likely that Jim will be in attendance as emcee and trophy presenter. We have a couple other former players on Tecmo Bowl that are interested as well. Its nuts.
Whatever your goofy hobby is, if you go balls out it may lead to something big. Forty FPS has management that deals with Netflix and HBO Max. Booya!
CJ's most notable film is the Price Is Right documentary (Perfect Bid) about the guy who figured out their pricing process and was in attendance for 35+ tapings over the year. Had Bob Barker in it, Drew Carrey, and tons of old PIR footage.
You can watch that free on youtube here: https://youtu.be/HdFKZtZop7A

Here is from the final 8 game that Nate won in OT. Its rare for the event to stop to watch another game this early on, but everyone knew this was huge: https://youtu.be/lGOLLv-JkE0
Scene from the RBI tourney: https://youtu.be/iyxnyWopTSg
Next year the film will make things more challenging, so I'll probably run the RBI tourney on Friday night. Tecmo Bowl on Saturday late afternoon.

I didn't study nearly as much as I SHOULD have (I didn't know the best defensive guys on CLE/DAL/SEA, who I ended up playing with a lot, and I didn't know passing options well enough, so I almost certainly left some open bombs on the board in favor of checkdowns), but I did pay a lot of attention to the blanket "when in doubt, pick a run and use the OLB on the other side" recommendation, and that really helped me keep running games in check. Eventually against Ronnie, that wasn't enough - after he got off to a really slow start, he was able to march down the field slowly but consistently and score on his last three possessions, which is why I took the failed gamble to go for the TD instead of kick a FG to break the tie with a minute left.

In the videos when Nate hits the walk-off field goal, I'm sitting directly to the left of the TV, and that was by request - Nate came to me at halftime and asked if I'd keep an eye on Jerry, because he was getting play-picked like crazy and had noticed that Jerry basically always picked defense after he did. While of course I can't say what happened in the first half, the second half appeared legit - Nate was being more careful, and Jerry was still slow on most play picks but was not suspiciously shifty-eyed. I played him two rounds later for fifth place, and he beat me 3-0, with nothing I'd consider suspicious, just very solid defense and just enough offense.

And best of all, the 2022 Omaha tourney will be the subject of a documentary! The RBI tourney will get a little exposure, but the film maker loves Tecmo and will focus on that. See the teaser video below.

You can watch that free on youtube here: https://youtu.be/HdFKZtZop7A
also finished watching the price is right doc today and i really enjoyed it. i thought he did a splendid job helping tell that guy's story and did it in a most wholesome way
Saw the Price is Right doc before, it's quite good. Big things on the horizon
I'm in '22 Tourney... keep me in the loop.
Excellent! TbT (the guy who runs the tourney) doesn't post here very often but is usually very good about popping on to keep us abreast of schedule updates, and you can also follow him on Twitter at https://twitter.com/TECMOBOWLvsRBI for additional news (and occasional posts about the games, especially Tecmo).
