Awesome, keep us in the loop.  Would you do both?

Still definitely considering, the odds would jump dramatically if I can find someone to do the drive with me.  Would only do RBI

BeefMaster

I would absolutely enter both even though I know I'm WAY out of my league for original Tecmo. I am guessing I'd also be out of my league in RBI but have at least played it more recently, plus I could get my son to practice with me. We do have Tecmo on his Switch (and I'm planning on ordering him the NES controllers), but he's not gonna want to play it much, and single-player can only do so much work in preparing you to play another human.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

I have the passwords to play with any team against any team in the super bowl.  That can certainly help you develop your offensive game because the top defensive end drops into coverage at a high speed and somewhat mimics a human defender in pass coverage.  Ive used that to help sharpen a few things in the passing game.  The average guy off the street typically sucks at Tecmo Bowl. There are certainly wins to be had mopping up against the bottom half of the field if you know a few tricks and can work at them a bit.  If we have a field of 20, 10 will not be very good.

I have some great strategy videos I'll link to that will help give you a leg up on the random inexperienced guy off the street.  Run defenses 101 is the very first thing I teach.

This particular play list has a lot of good stuff.  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNAbVGt_cdo1LqkNV8tKz07C3cDcAzW6v  Also the Denver/Cleveland videos vs the CPU will show you how to manage certain pass routes when you have a target running an out route.  The basic premise is to use the arrow to get the defender downfield then check down to the wr/te standing byt he sideline for a super safe and easy throw.

I'll absolutely be checking out that playlist. The specific strategy you mentioned, using the arrow to draw the defender to a downfield route in order to leave the checkdown open, is something I'm familiar with from Tecmo Super Bowl. Run defense is definitely going to be an issue for me - it's my achilles heel in TSB as well, and there are a few play designs in that one that even after almost 30 years I don't know how to stop reliably (e.g. the Neal Anderson bottom sweep from the offset I).

TB has absolutes in the run blocking schemes.  Shit that only happens a certain way in each instance, so pay close attention to the run defense 101 video.  The biggest part about run defense is to under stand the schemes and be able to immediately recognize when you won't be blocked then go and attack.  Inexperienced players really pussy foot around because they think a block is coming and aren't attacking that ball carrier.  Inexperienced players also suck at taking the proper angles to mitigate yards.  Just being sharp with a controller is very helpful.

As for the passing game, the check downs are mega important.  Against the random guys off the street, it'll make you look like a pro as you grind on down field flawless vs them.  We get some really good TSB players at our TB tourneys, and they properly execute the check downs and it keeps them in the game vs us.  Plus we tend to play a lot of bend but don't break vs random ppl off the street.  They will throw dumb picks in spite of us not trying to get picks though.  A smart player, even if he's not super knowledgeable or skilled will know its wise to take those short check downs and punt for field position if need be.

The thing with TSB and you may know this but there typically is an advantageous position to use on defense against every run.  There is 1 run and maybe its the one you are referencing thats tough to stop, but I've noticed the pros will use different defenders to counter my run plays and they usually do a good job after the 1st qtr.

Our 5th/6th place game for Tecmo was against a couple guys who hadn't played in 10 years and at least hung in for a half vs the heavyweights.  Point being it doesn't require a ton of skill to at least have a decent run in this tourney.

Beales drives over every year.  Another of our regulars from Chicago (Goes by Mort) drives over as well.  He and some guys host a monday night retro gaming event at D-men tap in Chicago.  He was one of the featured guys on the NFL films Tecmo Super Bowl documentary a few years back.  You should hit up D-men tap to get acquainted with that crew.  They have a free to enter event coming up in January with some legit cash to the winner.  RBI baseball, TSB, NBA Jam, NFL blitz games.  https://www.facebook.com/events/2427394107529322/  Its Saturday Jan 4th.   They do a ton of streams and play RBI fairly often.  Mort stays with us here.  He'd probably like the company for the drive over from Chicago.

PS we have 2 cats at the house.

I keep tabs on the D-Men events, it's quality and I've jumped on the streams before.  Sperling's place (and where I used to stay) was right down the street....   That said I'm in the burbs during the week and that's a haul plus I simply can't be at bars on a Monday night.  Maybe I pop in for the Saturday event though...

Any chance the next tourney runs next October or November?

Events are harded to run here in fall in Omaha.  A lot of places tend to reserve their party rooms during that time for Husker games.

Just switched my Facebook event status from "interested" to "going", which makes this as official as possible.

We're just over 3 months out.  Ran a facebook ad in major cities of CO, KS, SD, IA, MN, IL this weekend.  Drew in about "25 interested" on the facebook event page.  Might get some serious interest from a couple of those.  Bottom line; its work to get people to commit.  Will run an Omaha ad here soon.  Already getting positive feed back on the flyers posted at DJs Dugout.

Can I pre-pay for a guaranteed slot?  Seems like you might have a pretty high turnout, and since I'll likely arrive in the afternoon I don't want it to fill up with ppl doing both tournaments before I have a chance to register (I'll just be doing RBI)
