Title: Things to do in Columbus during the tournament...
Post by: fightonusc on 06/06/05, 12:46:07 PM
Doing some research to see if anything is going on special in Columbus the weekend of the tournament (other than the tournament itself, which I expect to be the biggest thing in town that weekend). I know that the Dee Nee community is hitting bars galore at some point, but some options to consider...

- The Columbus Clippers (http://www.clippersbaseball.com/), the Yankees' AAA team, is playing a home series against the Norfolk Tides that weekend. I wouldn't be opposed to the concept of getting some cheap seats for the game if the schedule works out. Nothing like minor league baseball for some good times...

- There's also a High School Battle of the Bands (http://www.promowestlive.com/site/html/search.php?id=45) at the Newport West Music Hall on Friday - nothing like getting drunk and heckling a bunch of bad teenaged bands...

- The Columbus Gay Pride Parade (http://www.stonewallcolumbus.org/) is on Saturday, so if anyone is interested in a Lemon Party during the tournament, I'm sure that can be arranged.

- There's some boxing event (http://www.powersboxing.com./modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=10) at the Nationwide Arena, but I haven't heard of any of the fighters...

That sounds sweet as anything, Mets/Yanks (sorta), could even expand it to a drinking game of sorts (I got the Tides, especially if Petit is pitching)

I'm down for the Clippers or Gay Parade, sans lemonparties.  Lets see how open the dee-nee members truly are, plus there is always adequate booze at such events...

Never experienced either, lets do a freaky testosterone/lack mix with baseball and pride.  Who is with me?

I'm definitely down for the Clippers game...and drinking heavily.

I would like to point out that Howard Johnson is the hitting coach of the Norfolk Tides. It's almost mandatory now that we bring a copy of RBI to the game to be autographed by HoJo - perhaps the cartridge to be used for the finals?

Post by: fknmclane on 06/06/05, 12:59:16 PM
Said cartridge should be given along with the prize money to the winner of the tournament.  I'd donate an extra copy of RBI for sure.

This is a tremendous idea, assuming I don't have to ask HoJo for his autograph...

I've been to the Gay Pride parade in West Hollywood once - a friend's friend was part of the Gay Men's Choir (if you've seen Six Feet Under, they are the vocal group David joins). It was fairly entertaining (the Gay Mormon Parents on Rollerblades was an interesting concept), but nothing that I'd go back to. Plus, the parade is in the afternoon, so unless peeps get knocked out early on purpose to make it out there...

(I'm just giving McLane an excuse for why he goes 0-2 and is done by lunch on Saturday)

The game starts at 7:25 p.m. I have no idea where the stadium is in relation to the hotel, or anything else in Columbus. I would recommend just buying tickets at the gate, since I think few of us are going to want to commit to anything until we know how we're feeling that night.

Whoa, how the fuck can you be gay and mormon?  Religious interpretation knows no bounds...

The minor league game is a much better fit, do they serve booze at said events?

I should point out that we need to get an announcement made about our group at the game:

"Do the Clippers offer scoreboard announcements?

We would be happy to welcome your group, or acknowledge an anniversary or birthday on our message board.  The Clippers offer this as a complimentary service.  We ask that you call us, at (614) 462-5250, or email us, at info@clippersbaseball.com, at least four (4) hours prior to a night game or 24 hours before a day game."

I'll handle getting it set up, but what should it say?

TICKETS

Box Seats: $9.00

Club Reserved Seats: $7.50

Reserved Seats: $6.50

General Admission: $5.00

Beer would appear to be $5.00 for a 20 oz. Draft (Bud or Bud Light) or 12 oz. Premium Beer (Michelob, Michelob Light, Michelob Ultra, Amber Bock). And, if you buy box or club reserved seats, they have staff that will take your food/drink orders and bring the food back to you in your seat. I've had this before at Staples Center for Kings games, and it's pretty sweet.

I'm not even going into the concept of getting a luxury box for the game... (http://clippersbaseball.com/tickets/suites/)

Can't be spoken because they pronounce "D Knee"

I know they didn't just call Michelob a "premium beer"

And I know they didn't just call Michelob Ultra a "beer" of any kind...

If we do an announcement, it should be welcome the participants in the 2005 National RBI Baseball Tournament, or something like that.

Hilarious that you mention this--my wife and I have been renting past Six Feet Under seasons (currently on 3, where David joins this choir).  David just ran into a friend at the video store--where he was informed that his last video is overdue.  The video, you ask?

"Back to the Crack: Butt-Munch II."  I thought this was exceptionally funny.  :)

I have a feeling that some form of "internal bleeding" will happen to at least one participant..

Cooper Stadium is the oldest stadium in the International League.  My dad used to go there as a kid...also, Riley and I were there about every weekend as kids...getting autographs.  I probably have about 1000 autographs from when I was a kid and Riley and I went...I'd even had willing players a stack of their cards and they'd sign 'em all (for some reason, I recall Charlie Puleo and Bob Brower signed 10-20 cards at a time for me)...

Are you guys talking about going to the game on Friday night?  Saturday won't work, for obvious reasons...

I once went to my town's gay pride festival when I was 19.  I felt totally out of place and even scared.  Perhaps I was less comfortable with myself than I had previously thought.

I've been to gay bars on a few occasions, always feeling a bit uncomfortable though not extremely so.  The last time I went to one (in October), I had a friend in town (who was a lesbian) and we decided to hit up my town's only gay bar.  I ended up making out with some chick all night at the bar, which made me feel even more out of place, though I think it provided me adequate protection.  Much needed protection.

just grape vine type shit, but i hear that sometimes women who are tired with the whole drunk guys hittin on em sometiems mosey over into gay bars.  of course then they got the lesbos gettin drunk and hittin on em though.  change of scenery i suppose.

As long as the beer is cheap and there is no dress code, I'll drink anywhere.  If I can't get a beer for under $4, I'm immediately uncomfortable.  50 cent draft night at a gay bar sounds perfect to me...

I'm in for this minor league game thing, I say we get ourselves a luxory box.
Title: Re: Things to do in Columbus during the tournament...
Post by: Gantry on 06/06/05, 03:14:45 PM
One thing we have to figure out is how many people can make the game.  Assuming the game starts at 7:20pm, then we probably have to leave the hotel by 7pm.

Are people who are arriving on Friday going to be at the hotel and checked in by 7pm?  Are there people who won't want to go to the game?

Those who are going to the game - are we staying the full 9 innings?  I can safely say that I won't be down for 9 innings of minor league baseball...
Title: Re: Things to do in Columbus during the tournament...
Post by: Attezzobal on 06/06/05, 03:31:42 PM
I'm down for the game, the full 9 innings, meeting Hojo (getting him to sign RBI and a pic of him and my bro who was maybe 5 at the time on Shea Stadium), drinking a shit ton, and having a taxi take me back to the hotel, I can get Malnu and TBT checked into our room so they could just meet us at the stadium if they don't get in in time...

Also down for a luxury box, although bleachers are sweeter...

And I've performed over a dozen times at gay bars/coffee houses in DC/Baltimore...So I'm cool with that as well.
Title: Re: Things to do in Columbus during the tournament...
Post by: fightonusc on 06/06/05, 03:33:53 PM
- Luxury boxes are $30 per person, so I'm thinking that's a no.

- fknmclane and I should be checked in well before 7 p.m. If we want HoJo to autograph a copy of RBI Baseball, we'll need to get there for batting practice, I would think.

- I don't need to stay for all nine innings, although we can just play that by ear.
Title: Re: Things to do in Columbus during the tournament...
Post by: Gantry on 06/06/05, 03:47:33 PM
Yeah, and I don't think that $30 per covers food or drink.  And it's $300 even if you have less than 10, if you have more than 10, you pay extra.  Pass on that...

i arrive 6-ish, maybe 6:15.  however i'll need to make some calls here to figure out just in what proximity i am to the hotel and such from the station, since im a loser and am getting a 100 hundred dollar round trip bus ticket from iowa.  fuck, cant beat the price, and i know i couldnt drive there that cheaply.

I'll get on that tommoro, or even maybe before softball tonight.  id be down for a game i guess.  I should make a gigantic sign with peter mcGrath on it wearing full baseball garb that says "hit it here, and win a lifetime supply of retard"

The bus depot address you gave me is downtown--and Cooper Stadium is right outside of downtown.  They're probably within 5 miles of each other...

those happen from time to time.  oh back to the task at hand, drop off them bags at the hotel, the motel, the holiday inn....before attending the game.

i did a quick yahoo map, says its about 8 miles thru town to get there.  columbus looks about the size of des moines so i'll definatley take the "over" on their 12 minutes estimated time to get there with city traffic.

since the hotel is smack dab next to the airport, should be a snap for me to snag a bus from downtown to the airport/hotel...im sure they constantly run shit back and forth.  i'll hunt down a phone # for cota or whatever and I might not even need to be picked up.  save some time on the round trip and gas as well.

If Pussy McBitchTits can't be bothered with a proper response other than repeating the same drunken, semi-hearted insult over and over again until he collapses onto his keyboard (leading Kat - who is a saint - to have to carry him to bed and explain to their crying child that "Daddy just got really sleepy. Then he got really sick all over the carpet. Then he got sleepy again."), then why should I continue. Much like a dog that's been run over after rdub chased it into on-coming traffic, it's time to put this bitch out of its misery.

That is to say, him continuing this is similar to him showing up for our game - an exercise in futility. Then again, as an ASU graduate, he should know about exercises in futility...

Seriously, just raise the white flag, stay in bed on Saturday morning rather than get killed by me, and save whatever dignity you have left.
