For Kyle Cetnars dumb tournament, I have won it 4 times in a row with the Houston Astros.  Last tournament I got screwed in last inning when the ball got stuck in the wall.  Now the NES version, Gantry or anyone else of you guys...in a curve game, would you have any strategy to beating Detroit...There the best team in the game...but there must be some strategy to totally demolishing them...I need something so something like that doesnt come close to happening again and i become the 5 time champ.  I am talking how to pitch, hit or anything you great combatants of R.B.I. can think of.  Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Greg "HBK" Hammond

Greg, Round 2 will surely come on that day of August 11th, and when our game begins, you WILL be in the losers bracket if you like it or not.... Your a 4 time nothing and i will do whatever it takes to beat you. Detroit WHAT baby... NEXT UNDISPUTED CHAMPION!

What Kyle Cetnar wont tell you is that he has NEVER even been in a championship game in his whole carreer of RBI.  And when ever a game is on the line he never is able to win, losing to the worse opponents.

I like the competitive fire.  I would ask Madlock Off the Bench for his thoughts about manipulating the lineup, he seems to be a saavy manager with Det.

greg- as byleven has indicated, I am the authority on Detroit.  You cannot beat them w/o a great hitting team, such as the BoSox or an all star team.  The Tigers lineup is too deep, with a great combo of righties and lefties.  They will put up big numbers; you must do so yourself against the Tigers relatively weak pitching.  You must get to Morris early as he gets stronger as the game wears on; Jeff King is one of the worst pitchers in the game- you must take pitches from him and then jump on him.  Hernandez is merely average.

As far as pitching goes, you would be wise to walk Tom Brookens and Madlock every time.  And dont let the tomahawk swinging matty nokes scare you because he hits fourth- he is not good.  Dont pitch to Chet Lemon in clutch situations as he will burn you.  And Mike Heath cannot hit the inside fastball.

I think Boston is a better team than Detroit, assuming you go Burks for Barrett and Armas for Owen.  Use Hendu off the bench in a big spot for Buckner or the pitcher.

Regarding beating Detroit, you need to take pitches, and foul some off, so you can get into their bullpen.  King is ranked as worst pitcher in the game on this site, and correctly so.  Guilllermo Hernandez is only slightly better.  I am not as much of a fan of Jack and Coke as a lot of guys on this site. I'm a Doyle guy.

What's so hard about pitching to Detroit, is that 1,2, and 3 are SO good, that you can find yourself in big trouble early.

So... I would say you'd have to take a curve pitcher like Blyleven, Krukow, Tudor or Ojeda and strike them out by having them chase pitches.  If you use a fastball hurler like Ryan or Clemens and try to break bats, they will destroy you.

To make a long story short, pitch to Whitaker and the pitcher all the time, and hope for the best against the other guys.  Maybe walk some guys intentionally and hope for some dp balls.

If I had one guy to beat Detroit, I would take Hurst and try to win a 6-5 type game.

You won't beat Detroit unless your strike out over 10 guys- you just can't have them making any sort of contact.

here is how you beat detroit... make their pitchers throw lots of pitches and get them tired which means king will have to pitch and he is very hittable.  as far as pitching,  dont let gibson hurt you...cause he will...  take chances with fat evans... he is a double play waiting to happen...  look out for chet lemon and whittaker...  they are dangerous in that they dont get the attention the meat of the order receives...

How did Gwynn3k make an edit in 1969?
The internet must have been so slow back then.

So basically the key to beating Detroit in curve is to get to their bullpen, correct?

It seems pretty clear to me.  Who am I to question such a scholar?

BeeJay, I believe it is a requirement that any post of yours that in any way relates to Blyleven_No-No must include a picture of Mega-Mecha-Blyleven.

I don't buy that "getting the relievers" strategy, I play a lot with Detroit, mainly against Boston and a decent amount against San Fran and Cali, I almost always start with Hernandez, go a strong three (If I can, sometimes four, sometimes two) than hand it over to King, than let either Morris or Alexander close out the last 4-5 innings (We only use one starter per game, well, most of the time), this tends to be pretty effective, and I've actually thrown 9 innings giving up less than 6 runs with just the two relievers (This way I get my two starters for a key game)

But that's just my two cents

RedBarron

Y'all is dumb.

The key to beating detroit in a curve game is to score more runs than them. . . .. duhhhhhhhhhh.

JoeDirt

I just can't/won't understand the knock on Willie.  I think he's lights out and even one of the premiere relievers in the game.

Im with dirt and attabobble.  hernandez can get it done.  nice perspective on the 1-SP games attezz.  those are much trickier to play when guys like king are involved on a regular basis.
