Hey guys -- I was wondering if I could get some help with Internet play. I just discovered this site Friday night; I had no idea there was an RBI following out there. Phenomenal. I've got my emulator and ROMs set up, as does an old buddy of mine who is equally stoked about rekindling a 15-year-old RBI rivalry.

We've both got FCE Ultra installed and working, and are using the same ROM. Internet play is enabled on both ends, but we've tried both the client and server radio buttons and nothing seems to happen. I don't know what's even supposed to happen, so that's the problem. Sorry for the technical ignorance here -- can anyone give me a hand on how to make this happen? Thanks in advance, and thanks for the great site. We've been laughing our asses off for two days straight now.

Josh...first of all, you should sign into the site--and so should your friend.

Word around the forum is that the online play does not work unless both parties are hooked up to the same LAN.

Just out of curiousity, where are you and your buddy located?

Hey Dirt -- thx, I'm now registered. I'm in Phoenix, and my friend is in Columbia, Missouri. But most of our epic RBI battles took place in South Dakota (where we went to high school) and Cape Girardeau, Mo., in our undergrad days.

Hopefully we can find a way to play each other online, but if not, it'll be OK; the unadulterated glee of being able to field our own RBI teams and edit their stats won't wear off for at least six, maybe seven years.

I haven't personally played with FCEU, but there are a few other things you'll need to do, from looking at the Network Play menu.  The "Remote Host" field under the "Client" button will probably need the IP address of the server machine.  You can get that by opening a Command Prompt (in the Accessories folder of the Start menu, at least in XP; it's called "MS-DOS Prompt" in Win98) and typing "ipconfig" (without the quotes; for Win98, it's "winipcfg").

If you're hooked up to the 'net through a router, things get more complicated - you have to go into your router config to find the IP address and allow traffic on the port the game uses.  How you do that depends on the router, so I can't be of much more help.

Completely off-topic: Where in SD are you guys from?  I grew up in Lemmon.

Thanks! I'll try using my machine as the server and let you know whether that works.

We were Air Force brats at Douglas High -- a few miles outside Rapid at Ellsworth AFB. We were there about 6-7 years -- long enough to pull many-a-grueling shift doing outside maintenance at the McDonald's on I-90 during the dead of winter. That shit'll make a man out of you really, really fast.

You're in Phoenix?  What are your cross streets?  I also live in Phoenix.  Send me a private message if you want.

I just wiped my ass then smelled the toilet paper.  What's wrong with me?

Holy shit.  You're fucking out there.  New development?  I live at 40th St and Thunderbird.  I'm probably about an hour away.  I'll keep you in mind if I ever get a tournament going over here.

Definitely -- I'll make the drive. I lived at 32nd St. and Sweetwater for about two years, so I know the area well. Been out here for about two years as well -- the subdivision was new then. LOTS of housing going up out here, with the arena, stadium, Westgate, etc. -- Josh

Sucka, that makes three from the Phoenix area.  Actually, I could get my brother and a couple of other friends to join in.  But they'll need some practice.
