On deck Circle

Has anyone wondered why the on deck circles are so fucking small?  DIscuss.

I've always wanted to see a foul ball stop inside the ondeck circle, but I've never seen it happen.

I think this is one of those questions of the universe that will never be answered.  I don't get it either.  And I too have always hoped for a ball to stop in the circle.  I'm sure it would totally fill it.
