Subject says it all...I decided that I wanted to try out some scale modeling, and ended up making a SOM baseball park...

Here's the latest of my progress:

When it's done, it will have a working scoreboard.

Jeeeeze. I would recommend placing a vertical "ad" over the button on the iPad just to make it look more awesome, but using that is a great idea in the first place.

Actually, it's not done, there will be a full face on the scoreboard so you'll only see the screen.

The Raiders are a successful organization

Apparently I don't get post notifications anymore from here, which is weird.  Just saw your post now...I got my hands on the 1982 set and have been playing a world series replay with it...so far, the Brewers are leading 3-1.  Game 4 will probably happen tonight or tomorrow...I can't believe I haven't found the strat stuff earlier in my life...

i don't know anything about strat-o-matic, but after snooping around their webpage, i'm (bi)curious

Yeah, I was looking for something new to play, and I actually think it might have been some old threads here that had me look it up.  I've since purchased the 1982 season from a reseller, as well as 1957 from Strat direct, and will probably buy the cards yearly now.  I freakin' love this stuff. We even have a small league going, and I've met a lot of cool baseball fans in the process.

I just purchased the football game as well, and while a bit more complicated, it's a helluva lot of fun as well.  If you get into it, let me know. It's not exactly a cheap hobby, but it's a lot of fun, and gets me away from playing video games.  Someday I hope my son gets into it...

WTF, why am I not receiving post notification emails anymore? Anyways, basically the company puts out a cardset every year for the previous season's stats.  It started in 61, but they've since carded sets from way the hell back, even in the 20s.  I have 1957, 1982, and 2010 in card form...there's also a PC game that allows you to not need the cards.

The whole thing is setup on dice rolls...you roll one white die and 2 colored die.  The white determines if you read from the pitcher card, and colored determines what the result is from 2-12.  Guys like Pujols will have hits and HRs all over his card, including the high probability rolls (6, 7, etc), while chumps will have their big plays limited to the lower probability rolls (like 2, or 3).

There are running, stealing, bunting, fielding ratings on the card.  When a result calls for the fielder's ability (error, great play, etc) to come into play, you roll a die and read the result off the chart.  You basically manage the game, deciding when to steal, take extra bases, throw for the play at home, etc.

If you were to play a whole season, the game is so accurate that your stats should reflect the actual stats for that player that year.  There are netplay leagues (if you have the PC game) or play by forum leagues (like the one I run) where the home team rolls all the games using the strategy instructions of the road opponent (when to steal, when to hold runners on base, when to stretch bases, who to pitch in what inning, IF in, etc) and then posts the results on the board.

Here's our league website

I even have a few solitaire projects going on (I replayed the 82 world series, and will be doing a 1957 milwaukee mini season soon)

It's "Watch Mode" on steroids.  As I said, it's super nerdy, but a lot of fun.  I just got into the football game, but so far it's fun.

Think of it like dungeons and dragons, but for baseball.  That's a guess because I've never played D&D, but that's how I describe it to people.

Loved SOM.  APBA too, but it took longer to play (but was more statistically cool).  Don't get me wrong - I still love RBI (grin) - but it is a shame that many have lost the love of board games like this.  I'm playing the old Avalon Hill/Sports Illustrated sports games with my kids now, and after some initial "what the hell is this" they are asking to play regularly now.  It's more social than video games IMHO, though it does require non-video game skills like math, reading.  Hmm, maybe there's something to that.  truly.

Nice work on the SOM.  it's not nerdy; it's cool.   Show it proudly.

Turd

From what I hear, since I haven't played APBA or the other variations, SOM is supposed to be the most accurate statistically.  Either way, I'm invested in Strat, I have been part of the forums for a while now, so I'm devoting my time to that.  I'm comfortable with it.

I used to play the shit out of some APBA.

My brother 1 hit me with Charlie Hough  1985 TEX vs KC. I won 1-0 on a Leadoff inside the park HR by Willie Wilson.
