September 14th, 1986 Bob Brenly of San Francisco tied a major league record with four errors in one inning, but atoned with two homers, including the game-winner, to give the Giants a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Brenly, normally a catcher, was playing third base.

I know this is listed in the Hall of Shame but I thought it would be nice to recognize the feat of the game winner, even though its a day late.

Nice job, wisnoodles.  I've always loved that one.  Even though Bob was a shitty manager, he came through huge in that game.  I like to think he ran around the bases giving the finger to the fans who were booing him earlier in the game.

he is consistently coming through for me, not always the long ball, but often enough.  he seems a tad faster than his speed rating.

His four errors led to 6 unearned runs, he really doesn't deserve any credit for winning the game when he essentially almost cost them the game.

A few things, apparently he made 2 errors on 1 play. 

4 Arcade RBIers batted that inning for Atlanta.

For some reason Brenly played 3B 45 times in 1986, he had only played 21 games at 3B before '86 and only play 2 games at 3B after '86 (not suprisingly).  Not sure why they used him ther so much at third that year.

Well in any case, he certainly didn't cost them the game, since they did win.

The point is he shouldn't have had to win the game. If he had made those four plays at third, the Giants would have won (presumably of course) 7-0. All the runs were unearned BECAUSE of his errors. If should have never come down to him needing to hit not one, but two homeruns.

he deserves credit for winning the game, but he also should get the credit for putting the win in jeopardy in the first place.  whatever, it makes for a good story, that can be retold around many campfires for many generations to come.  i can just picture telling my grandchildren about the great bob brenly and his legendary tale of saving face.  even now i am getting all teary eyed
