Hi (this is my first post here) I was amazed at the size and the huge amount of activity here....I love the site and I hang around a lot of forums so I couldnt resist not registering and poppin 'er in my favorites

Anyway, I'm off to college next year and will be living off campus in a decently large house with 1 roomate. I figured I'd pick up a stand up RBI I have no problem paying 400-600 or so...but ya guys think it's worth it? I've always been a huge arcade fan and that's where I first learned off this game. I figured if I do get it, every year I could add another game I want to pick up a NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, and Area 51 all of which (very short list of them) I've dropped hundreds of dollars in, in my younger days.....anyway, just if ya have a RBI stand up drop me a line and tell me whatcha think about it....

It may be worth it if you are going to play a lot, but the machines are huge and not fun to try and transport, especially if there are stairs involved.  I would recommend waiting until you are living in a more permanent location, but then it's up to you to decide if it's worth the hassle.  I'd stick to playing the NES while in college, though.

Welcome...what college and where are you from?

I ask because I have one that I've been thinking about moving along...my RBI buddy and I don't get as much time to play it now that we're married (and he's with kids...) like we used to back in the day.

Joe-  You actually want to get rid of your Arcade machine, that's insane.  I can't imagine ever wanting to get rid of mine.

It's just a shame to have to go unused in my basement (along with Space Invaders, The Simpsons, Dig Dug, Tron, Joust...).

If I can get what I have in it, I'd just assume find a good, loving home for it.  It deserves much better.

I think I'd find plenty of time to play them, plus I've always been a collector at heart

JoeDirt

Well, if you wanna make a road trip to Ohio, lemme know...

lol....we'll see, I'm gonna watch eBay for a while and see if I see anything exciting, I might even check out the place around here that used to have it, the last time I was there, 4 or 5 years ago it was still there up and running

I have to admit that our RBI Arcade doesn't get nearly as much action as the NES version.  It's a little uncomfortable to play on the small, cocktail version we have.  Most people prefer the NES version and there are a couple people who don't like playing arcade at all...

That being said, if we had RBI arcade in college it would have gotten way more action.  Having a large group of people shufffling in and out makes it much easier to find a game.  Now that we're old and settled you get less random people and games...

I concur with the moving part though.  If you have stairs you are in big trouble.  Especially if you get the standup version.  That fucker is heavy...

So I say pull the trigger if you have a large amount of friends who want to play and don't mind the pain of moving it...

And welcome to the forums!

justinkinnunen

no stairs....I'mma be livin in a shitty ass mobile home, it's actually pretty nice compared to the rest of them...but still a moot point

with the people that flow through my house now I'm sure it would get plenty of use. there's always somebody here though most arent into NES/RBI...but maybe if I had an enticing arcade version... 8)

Sorry to hear that.  You know, there's a real college up in Brookings... :-)

Shit....I don't wanna learn how to drive tractors and party with the 6000 fat ugly chicks....everytime I go visit friends up there I wonder how they can take it with no decent looking women

nightwulf

It can be done; learn to consolidate. NBA Jam and NFL Blitz are both Midway titles, with identical control panels iirc. Unless they've changed considerably since I've been in the arcade business (October 1998) you should be able to use one cabinet for both games. Switching takes a screwdriver and two minutes of work. Possibly quicker if you creatively mount both boards in the cabinet.

justinkinnunen

Yeah I was kind of wondering that, there was a whole lot of tech talk with the cabinets and boards and I figured I better research that some first. Personally I think Blitz and Jam would get a lot more play than RBI but I would definitly like to have RBI

BeefMaster

If you can stand newer versions of the games, I've seen ready-made combination NBA Showtime (I think that's the name)/NFL Blitz machines, too.  Showtime doesn't really have the same allure as the original NBA Jam, though.

College-bashing aside (although I probably should take offense, since I met my wife at SDSU), it's too bad I'm not 5 years younger - one of my HS buddies went to USD in '99-'00, and I went down to visit him a couple times.  It would've been sweet to work in some RBI, too.

Tractors aren't that hard to drive, either.

justinkinnunen

Your wife went to SDSU? or both of you?
Yeah, that is a shame....
Showtime it may be, or it could be Hangtime, I believe showtime was on a 3vs3 DC game (may have been on other consoles, and im sure it was) but Hangtime was the 64 game that came out around the sametime as Blitz so I have a feeling its hangtime w/ blitz. the only other thing is that I'm sure a blitz/hangtime(or showtime) combo is probably a duece grand, little spendy for my blood....

but back to schools, my father is not only a USD alumni, but also track and XC coach there, so he'd probably disown me if I wanted to go to state :P

BeefMaster

You're correct about Hangtime - I played ridiculous amounts of that game my freshman year of college on my roommate's N64.  However, the combo machine I saw had NBA Showtime - I just found this link.  I've played NBA Showtime before - it's the same style of gameplay as NBA Jam and NBA Hangtime, except with actual 3D graphics and a bit more realism (it's still not all that realistic, but it's not as crazy as the others were).

Hmm...Interesting.....I'll have to check that out for sure, it's a great game. I actually own showtime for DC (and it isn't even a copy if ya can believe it)....

chubbrock

NBA Showtime is a fantastic game.

I still play it to this day.

I does have more realistic gameplay and graphics, but it stills packs all the ridiculous stuff as well.
