Better to get beat 2-1 than to prove my ultimate suckiness by getting smashed at straight pitch.

if you play any way other than anything-goes, it's really not all that much different from plain straight pitch. It's just guessing speeds, and maybe adjusting a tiny bit L-R if it's slurve, but really, you can hit the ball every time, even when you're drunk.
