PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks named former Major Leaguer Kevin Seitzer as their hitting coach Friday and signed him to a one-year deal.

A veteran of parts of 12 seasons with the Royals, Brewers, A's and Indians, Seitzer will replace Mike Aldrete, who elected to leave the staff after two seasons.

Seitzer, 44, began his career in 1986 when he appeared in 28 games with the Royals and retired following the 1997 season when he was a member of the American League champion Cleveland Indians. Known more as a gap hitter, Seitzer hit .295 in 1,439 Major League games and collected an American League-leading 207 hits in his rookie season. He finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting to Mark McGwire that year.

Toward the end of his playing career, Seitzer established the Mac-n-Seitz Baseball and Softball Company in Kansas City along with former teammate Mike Macfarlane. The company provides instruction and training to the public, but Seitzer has also worked with several high profile big leaguers over the years.

The D-backs also interviewed Rick Schu and Dave Hudgens for the position.

Despite being a right-handed batter, he (Seitzer) gets good hits at a 14 contact rating (should be lower because he batted .323). The Seitz, as I call him, usually replaces Bill Schroeder (despite Terry Kennedy of Baltimore Orioles was on the all-star team, and he's a righty for God's sake). Kevin Seitzer is too fucking underrated, and gets pinch hits when needed. Despite he struck out looking to Bonny, "The Seitz" needs to avoid grounding out at all costs like righties do.
