Thon was born in Indiana, but his mother's family is from Puerto Rico, and he lived there since he was a kid. He is considered puerto rican by Jose Crescioni's stat book "Los Boricuas en las Grandes Ligas" (Boricuas in the Big Leagues).

Reginald Martinez Jackson's mother was puerto rican, but he used Martinez as his middle name. He played in PR with the Santurce Cangrejeros where he set the winter league HR record (20).
