It's mediocre, at the very least, now.  I played online with nomaaa a few weeks ago, and while it wasn't lag-free, it played pretty smoothly other than a couple of lag spikes.  It was easily good enough for straight-pitch.

I've been playing a bit with Nestopia 1.36 (and an updated Kaillera client... that's key) and it's been working great.  Only a couple of spikes, but nothing game killing.  It's worth peeking into.  I can post links if people are interested.

PLaying onlone isnt bad at all.  You just have to play a couple games and get use to it.  It is lag free alot of the time with and occasional hiccup.  Nothing bad enough to where u shouldnt play online.  And its the exact same for both players, so its an even playing field.  Just give it a try.  It takes 5 minutes to set up and is def. worth it.  Whenever my brother goes out of town I play him, and its fine.

It's definitely not "almost identical" to the original, but I think it's playable.  It'd definitely take a bit of practice - the controls seemed a bit sluggish to me, so you'd have to anticipate the pitch location and speed even more than usual.  There were also some lag spikes, which renders everything useless, but they weren't too frequent, maybe two or three during the three innings nomaaa and I played.

I've downloaded all the necessary files, NES MAME rocks the shit. I feel stupid for buying a $40 system that plays NES/SNES games

Anyway, as soon as I get a gamepad for the PC I'll get online and try to lose to some of you guys.

All u need to play is Nestopia, Kalliera, and a ROM. 
Nestopia is the emulator that plays the games(ROMS)
Kalliera allow you to use servers to play others people.
And the ROMs of course are the games.

It takes a minute to set up.

When I play online I like to play slurve rules.  It def. works the best.
