Going all the way back to 1987 when I first got the game...

1. AL... shitty runners, but the best hitting team in the game.  Jimmy Key is my guilty pleasure pitcher, & McGwire is the automatic HR threat.

2. NL... Raines is the best leadoff player in the entire game, the rest of the entire lineup (with proper subs) can/will hit HRs like crazy.  Pitching kinda sux but it gets the job done.

3. San Fran... even though their pitching doesn't do much for me, their lineup is all star caliber- Uribe does well for me, C.Davis is a masher, & W.Clark is THE man.- no holes in this lineup.

4. Boston... yep, they're the most balance official team imo... Clemens & Hurst are my fav 1-2, with subs there is enough power from top to bottom, & Boggs has always been a great grounder through the hole guy for me.  Armas is a freak.

5. Detroit... 1-4 batters & Alexander-Morris = all I need to rack up the runs & keep the opposition down

6. Minnesota... yep, they work for me- even if Puckett doesn't hit enough HRs.

7. New York... a few all stars scattered about = good enough for a few mercy rule victories

8. California... worst-best team I've ever played with... Reggie doesn't quite do it for me (nor does he ever hurt me too much)... decent lineup that stays in games

9. St. Louis... if Coleman & Ozzie could actually hit grounders like Boggs & Uribe, this team would be freakish- but those 2 guys fukk up too often for me- usually it's McGee & Herr who end up saving the day!?  Jack Clark is a tool.  Pitching's alright.

10.Houston... Kevin Bass is a guilty pleasure cuz he can run with the best of'em.  Glenn Davis is like Pete Incavelia meets Rob Deer :D  = he blows & doesn't mop up enough.  Ryan & Scott are the only things keeping me in games.

Obviously, it shifts around a bit depending on different game play (ie.. AG single game, AG series play (no resets), or straight pitch BP style).

1-4.  NL, Cal, Det, & Boston are (for the most part) very equal overall.  Depending on style of play, or just how I am feeling they can be interchangeable.

NL, Excellent order top to bottom, great power and decent pitching.  The problem is you have to use too much of your bench to get a good order.  Sandberg, Galleraga, & Pedrique, need the boot right away.

Cal, I hate their pitching but lineup is very solid.  You can still leave two guys on the bench after making necessary subs to starting lineup.

Det, great power, ok pitching, and lots of bench as Herdnon is the only guy who needs an early exit.  Downfall is slowness.  Nokes may get tossed out more from RF than any other guy besides Herbeck.  DEvans (although powerful) also gets tossed out a lot from RF).

Boston, Excellent pitching with Clemens, but rest of staff is pretty weak.  Great lineup after getting rid of Barret/Owen, and you still have Hendu on the bench for some needed POWER off the bench in late innings with guys on base.

5-7 is my next tier of interchangeables depending on the situation.  MN, SF, Am.

Minnesota has a a top notch pitcher in blyleven, and a solid lineup.  It's also nice that you can leave 3 guys on the bench to sub out pitchers.  For me, if Puckett gets hot, they are a very solid team.  Unfortunately he craps the bed a lot for me.

SF, IMO shitty pitching once you get past Krukow.  But a very solid power lineup once you sub spilman for uribe.  Again a near full bench.

Am, has shitty, shitty pitching.  Their lineup is solid, but you have to bat Mac leadoff to get it that way.  Brett (like Pucket) craps the bed a lot for me.  Also, you can leave 3 guys on the bench, but they are all righties with no power to speak of.  Again a solid offensive team until you need help from the bench.

8-9.  NY, Sl.

New York, Decent pitching wth the doc.  There downfall is getting their lineup to click.  You have to get Backman/Santana out right away... there is no avoiding that.  Then you have 1-2 batters that I hate, but you kind of have to leave them in the game.  Both very weak, albeit with some speed.  I just don't like having to bat 3 straight guys with no power (9,1,2).  3-5 is very solid solid, but otherwise; meh.

Sl.  Tudor is great.  Lineup is rather weak.  Same problem at the top of the order for SL. Not chance for a HR 1-2, and it is tough to sub guys with all that speed (although I usually pull one of them for Morris eventually if not right away).  If they are hitting grounders you might have a chance.  Clark is the only guy who offers real power other than subbing Lindman for Ford.

10.  Ho, the clear loser.  You can usually make a game of it in a 1-game ATG event since Nolan/Scott are very solid pitchers and very easy to throw a shutout with those two guys.  However, scoring runs is a problem.  GDavis can be pitched around and then you have a bunch of crap to look forward to.  Sometimes Lopes/Garner can make things happen around GDavis to score few runs.

Well, if you want my opinion on the BEST teams, here it is:

1.  NL
2.  Det
3.  AL
4.  Bos
5.  Cal
6.  SF
7.  Min
8.  NY
9.  StL
10.  Hou

As for teams that I like to play with, that's a different story.  I hate the Tigers and the All Stars, I think it's more fun to play with flawed teams.

*I like to play curve rules, with only 1 SP allowed in a game...  That may help explain my preferences.

1.  Min - If RBI was a shitty 80's sports movie, the Twins would be the plucky upstarts that have the talent to go the distance, but just need to piece it together to make it happen.  If you're on this team can contend.  I feel like people forget this team a lot, but there's a lot of upside to this squad.

2.  SF - Krukow and Reuschel are just nasty bastards to pitch with and that makes this team a lot of fun to play.  This is another team that's not top tier, but in the right hands can easily contend with the big boys.

3.  StL - Well, I'm a Cards fan as it is, so that's a big part of the appeal.  I also love Tudor's left handed nastiness.  It's fun to play with a group of guys that don't blast homers a a lot (Jack Clark not included) but can blaze on the basepaths (Jack Clark not included).  I love playing StL-Hou series.  Fun shit.

4.  Bos - My favorite top tier team.  The rocket rarely disappoints, and the Boston bench is so nasty you can really play with the lineup and make it solid as a rock.

5.  NY - This team has some pieces but falls short of being able to consistently contend with the big dogs, even when the player is hot.  I think that shortcoming makes winning with this team that much sweeter.  Bonus:  Best relief corps in the game.

6.  Cal - I never liked this team that much personally, although there's talent there.  When I'm on with this team I'm pretty unstoppable, unfortunately Reggie hates me so I'm rarely on with this team.  Maybe the pink unis throw me off?

7.  Hou - Sick pitching, and can be nasty in a series for that reason alone.  Nolan is godly.  Houston's entire lineup should hang their heads with shame.  It's painful to play with these guys but you can always take a "nothing to lose" mentality into these games and that's kind of fun.  Houston-St. Louis series are some of the best fun to be had in the original cart.

8.  Det - Fuck these ass clowns.  I don't like when teams come out that are as good as or maybe better than All-Stars.  The power these guys have is simply stupid.  Sure, they have the weakness of being slow on the base path, but that doesn't matter when the ball is hit into the next county, does it?  Also, this team is the opposite of Houston...  when you play with Detroit, you are expected to win, which makes playing with them a little more stressful.  If Houston has nothing to lose, Detroit has nothing to gain.

9.  NL - I don't like playing with All-Stars.  If I have to play with them I prefer the NL.

10.  AL - I rarely play with these guys.  I do enjoy using Saberhagen though.

anyone ever notice that if you drop a deuce on someones windshield in sub-freezing temperatures, its pretty damn hard to get off once it freezes.
