For the forums, I guess the big question is do I simply migrate it to the new server on the current version of SMF or do I move it over and upgrade to SMF the 2.1 version.  On paper it makes sense to move and upgrade but that likely is a bunch more work.

upgrade is prolly the best way to go, it hasn't been an issue and maybe never will but an additional benefit of upgrading besides the obvious is that vulnerabilities are addressed.  That said I don't have to do any work so it's easy for me to say

That's the thing though - the version we currently run of SMF (2.0) is still supported and fixes vulnerabilities.  I'm getting off the old server because of the out of date version of Red Hat Linux, apache web server, php language SMF uses, mysql database server etc.  Those are the ticking time bomb security issues being fixed by the server migration, the forum software as of now is in the clear.   You are right about upgrading SMF to 2.1 being the best way to go, all a matter of how much time it will take and pain tolerance for me. 

Really everything has been easier than anticipated though, especially since I have forgotten most of my Linux/apache/mysql admin skillset.  Maybe the forum will be more of the same

Well it didn't work, something related to a fucking flash bbcode won't run on php 8.0 that is on the new server.  So I have to install a mod on the current server to disable that thingy (it wouldn't install on the new) and copy all the files over again. 

I'm going to try again tomorrow, as I prefer to make a backup of the current server before I install that mod just in case.  So I'll shut down the server and back it up at 6am tomorrow, install the mod and if successful try all this again tomorrow night.

OK I'm removing a bunch of REALLY old mods, some may not be compatible with the new version of PHP.  Quite frankly it's easier to remove them and ask questions later - so if something isn't working let me know.

I'm starting to modify files on this here version as well, as that's less work for me when we do the final move.  Post any weirdness in this thread. 

Basically we did so much hand editing of the main forum files and installed so many old mods that some of the main forum files didn't get fully updated to the latest versions.  Some of these updates were specifically to make the forums work with PHP 8.0 so anything that didn't get updated I have to manually copy and paste in from the latest version of the source code. 

It'll be bumpy ladies and gentlemen, but we'll get through it.

It was mostly working last time, things like editing profiles broke but I would see the topics and post.  So we're getting there.
