Check this out.

EDIT: I've been told the link doesn't work (it does for me, but it's in my browser cache).  Copy and paste this into your address bar: http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/rbi_baseball_roster.txt

This guy made a "Roster FAQ" for RBI Baseball, and in it, he gives each player a "star rating" (although for some reason he uses the letter X).  However, he apparently did this having never actually played the game.  For example, he gives Marty Barrett an XX rating, while Tony Armas has just X (Boggs is the only Boston player to rate XXX).  On the Twins, Puckett gets XXX, while Hrbek is given X.  On the National team, the only two players to get XXX ratings are Raines and Gwynn (everyone else got XX).

I think what the guy did was rate the players purely on their contact and speed ratings - the FAQ mentions that their average and homeruns don't affect their stats while contact and speed do, but he doesn't have any mention of power rating.  Seriously, though, you can't play the game all that much without seeing that the contact ratings don't determine power-hitting ability.

And of course, we all know that Ca and Dt are the two worst teams in the game, and that Minnesota is the best non-All Star team...

Needless to say, I'm sending him an e-mail on behalf of the Dee-Nee community today.

Just for kicks, I totaled up the guy's ratings for each team to get an idea of how good he thought they were.  Here they are:

California: Hitters - 18; Pitchers - 5
Boston: Hitters - 19; Pitchers - 9
Detroit: Hitters - 17; Pitchers - 7
Minnesota: Hitters - 20; Pitchers - 8
Houston: Hitters - 19; Pitchers - 7
New York: Hitters - 18; Pitchers - 7
St. Louis: Hitters - 18; Pitchers - 8
San Francisco: Hitters - 19; Pitchers - 8
American: Hitters - 20; Pitchers - 8
National: Hitters - 26; Pitchers - 8

So, Minnesota is the best non-all-star team, while Detroit is the worst team in the game.

Apparently, he got tired of rating pitchers halfway through - every pitcher for the last four teams has a XX rating.  Also, the only pitchers to get XXX ratings are Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens.

The FAQ section at the end is priceless.

Q: Is the national team really that much better than the other teams?

A: Yes, the number one reason for this is the fact that they dont have any
Bad players.

BeefMaster

I think it's funny that he repeatedly spells Paul Molitor's name wrong, even though he's the second-best player in the game.  Also, one of the entries in the revision history says that he spellchecked it, yet I can't imagine that a spellchecker wouldn't have "San Francisco" in its dictionary.

Nobody show this to JoeDirt - his list of greatest players includes "Alan Trammel".  Joe's head might explode.

By the way, sorry for posting something that was in the article I posted - I completely didn't notice that he totalled up his ratings at the end (I mostly just looked at the ratings and decided the guy was an idiot).

"Q: Is it true taht the cartridge is BLACK!?

A: Yes, to tell you the truth i thought it was a sega genesis game at first."

Which explains why he's just now learning about the game - he kept trying to put the cartridge into his Genesis...

Ha ha...I already had "Detroit: Alan Trammel" in cut and paste but was reading through the rest of the posts before pointing it out!

it sounds to me like he's a kid...I'd be a little careful of blasting this person because he posted some stuff on RBI.  At least it's something.  And he's obviously a fan of the game...

Take it easy, fellas.

I agree with Joe.  Dont hurt the poor kid's feelings.  Still its kind hard to believe he mispelled AT's name.  Everybody knows there are two LLs in Allan.

Here's the message I sent to him. I tried to not completely slam him, but it bothers me when people put up incorrect information and it gets taken as fact (like the "players with a 'h' at the end of their name get a boost" nonsense).

Hey Todd,

I read your RosterFAQs for RBI Baseball on the GameFAQs site, and I hate to tell you, but it's kind of flawed. Perhaps you need to do some more research into the world of RBI Baseball before you make your next roster guide.

For example:

- In rating the players, you factor in only two characteristics - contact and speed. However, each player in fact has their own power rating, which is probably the most important of the three batter variables. The power ratings go from a low of 708 (Rafael Santana) to a high of 954 (Andre Dawson). This has been determined through research based on analyzing the code within the game.

- Even without knowing this information, I am surprised that anyone who has played this game to any degree would think that Paul Molitor is the best hitter in the game; if you would rather have him up in any situation rather than, say, Andre Dawson or Darrell Evans, you aren't paying attention.

- Similarly, almost any serious RBI Baseball player would consider California and Detroit to be among the top three non-All Star teams in the game, along with Boston (where they rank within the top three is widely debated.) And absolutely everyone agrees that Houston is without question the worst team in the game.

- From your Q&A:

"Q: Is the national team really that much better than the other teams?

A: Yes, the number one reason for this is the fact that they don't have any Bad players."

Really? Al Pedrique isn't a bad player? And contrary to your belief, Andres Galarraga isn't a good player – he's an automatic sub out every game for the serious player (bring in Guerrero - he's a big power hitter and you get a power rating boost the first time a player pinch hits in the line-up.)

- You might want to visit http://dee-nee.com/rbi/, which is the source of all RBI Baseball research and information. It has a much more accurate FAQ section, and player ratings that include power and detailed contact and speed numbers.

- Also, you might to check out the forums at http://forums.dee-nee.com/, where a large group of RBI Baseball elite gather to discuss the game.

- This thread might be of specific interest to you: http://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?topic=5439.0

Sorry if this comes off as a bit harsh, but there is a lot of misinformation about RBI Baseball out there (like the common "players with as 'h' on the end of their last name receive a power boost" misconception) that is spread by poorly-researched GameFAQs. It would be great if you could update what you've done, or just point people to the Dee-Nee site for more thorough and accurate information. We'd love to have you in the forums, since we're always looking for RBI Baseball fans (whether they are beginners or experts).

Dude...what if that's a kid?  Doesn't that make you an asshole?  :)

Well, I mean, doesn't that just make one more person know that you're an asshole?  :)

You forgot to inlude phrases such as "I'll fucking kill you" and "die" as well as links to lemonparty and tubgirl.

If it is a kid, I'll invite him to come to my place sometime so we can play RBI Baseball. And then I'll drug him and anally rape him. See, BeeJay, unlike you, I know that you can't move too fast; you have to have a slow hand.

I thought the message was well played, FightOn.  Nothing wrong with challenging someone else's ideas and making them think.  Encouraging him to view the website and join the forums was a class move too.  Recruit and educate.
