You mother is going down at 10:30 tonight, if you know what I'm saying. 8)
What do you mean nacho?
Sorry, typo. I mean't to say YOUR mother.
So his mother?
YOUR mother.
But Reds' mother is my mother!
We're back
YOUR back.
Casey Ryback?
Switching around my WiFi stuff, 15-20 minutes of downtime.
WE're back
This week has been really choppy. Site not loading on desktop. Fine on tapatalk. Screenshot attached.
Anyone else having problems? I've heard or seen nothing
Agreed. It's been on-and-off the last few days. Not bad enough to send angry texts to Gantry, but close. The thought has crossed my mind.
Please give more details about where and when it happens, as I can't fix a problem I don't know about. Who else is having issues and would you say it started this week?
I move my WiFi controller to a cloud based setup Friday night, that's the only think I can think of.
I just had problems like 2 minutes ago. Basically, a few times/hour I'll try to reload or post something and it will give me the graphic mclane posted. Usually just have to wait a minute or two and everything is fine again until it happens again just a bit later.

Same.
Started this week.
Yes. All the fucking time. Probably 1/3 of the time I try to dee-nee at work this week.
Same here.
yeah, same for me too
I think a public flogging of Gantry is in order.
Jesus fucking christ, Gantry
So everyone has had issues accessing all week and nobody bothered to tell me? You people are the fucking worst, I'll start with the basics (server/router reboot) when I get home.
I thought it was the firewall at work. Never happened at home.
We shouldn't have to tell you this stuff.
I haven't had a problem, though I mostly check from within the same system as the server. I'm going to reboot the server in a few. It'll go down, but you are used to that.
Server reboot, let me know when that doesn't help - cause I'm pretty sure it won't.
Been choppy for me all day. Can't remember whether the last time was before or after the reboot, though, so I am pretty much no help.
I'm going to power cycle the router now, speak up if it fucks up again. Cause I need to fix before Tuesday morning, or else you are dealing with it for 10+ days.
router back up, from this point on post specific times when it didn't work and how long it takes to come back
Well I broke my video watching some wrestling, so I'm rebooting. This doesn't count...
Man, happened again. Maybe my video card is crapping out, though the forums are working fine. Reboots galore people, gonna update some video drivers. Apologies
Not sure if it was an actual instance of the problem or not... I just attempted to hit the forums, Firefox hung for a minute or so, and then I tried it again and it worked, albeit a few seconds slower than usual.
I tried to load a google image a couple minutes back and the page couldn't be displayed. Timing is similar. Keep posting when it doesn't load, I have continuous ping tests to my router and a couple outside sites.
Next time it happens I can see if I lost access to my router or just the internet.
At work right now the page just constantly is showing as loading. Even after everything is loaded and I can navigate the site and post, that little loading circle thing in the address bar keeps spinning.
Anyone else seeing that?
Now its lightning fast and not loading...
Its just acting fucking weird this week for some reason.
What does "lightning fast and not loading" mean?
Something about your penis
Any suggestions on another site we can all join?
So nobody but Reds has had an issue in the last hour and a half?
"has had" can't be right, someone rewrite that sentence

I had the same issue.
More details of what and when please.
I'm going to take the forums down for a minute or two at 11:30 to install an updated network driver. Worth a shot.
So you're saying you're going to leave for more than a week and no one will be manning the Dee-Nee server if we have a problem? Dude...
Everything seems to be okay now.
haven't done anything yet, updating now.
That was quick
ITS DOING THAT THING AGAIN!
Specifics
Its back to okay again. But essentially what Mclane said.
Hopefully nobody is up this early, fucking with my video card drivers.
Shit's fuck, but what can you do. Think my onboard video is on the fritz, gonna stick with the card and two screens short term and see if all is well. Streaming video ain't crashing the browser so that's a good sign.
I'm at my office now and can see home of the issues - very slow to make a post sometimes. Though it hasn't timed out on me yet - have a remote session to my computer at home and it never went down and the test pings stayed constant. This means it's likely not an Internet issue but more of a server problem.
Do you guys see the problem in general browsing or more when you make a post?
General browsing
Haven't seen that yet today, in fact I haven't seen a post issue since the one I mentioned. Stupid sexy inconsistent forums.
Got another delayed post, though it was just slow and ended up happening. When the post is delayed, my system is fully accessible and the process monitor on my server doesn't show any crazy activity. I think my "slow post" issue is different that what you guys are seeing.
Still shitty.
Yeah I'm only getting things to load maybe 1 in 3 tries.
Texted Gantry. Will continue texting minute by minute updates...
I never see this problem, so I don't know how to fix.
Working fine for me today, hope that helps!
it got hung up for me when I clicked a thread earlier. Usually I can immediately click on it again and it will open, but this time it did not.
using chrome on work laptop/network. I noticed there was a message where urls usually show up that said "waiting for proxy tunnel..."
It has to be related to my internet connection because i've seen some slight slowdowns here at work but never at home. I never get that thing that Reds gets where the whole page doesn't load. My ping tests don't drop though. It's a bit confusing
Quote from: fathedX on 01/30/15, 11:16:23 AM
So you're saying you're going to leave for more than a week and no one will be manning the Dee-Nee server if we have a problem? Dude...
Carly is feeding my cats, she's on the job.
So I am seeing the delays here at work, to the point where I lose my ssh login connection. I think it's not a network/internet issue as my host windows server doesn't go down, just the linux. So I'm making progress though I still have no idea why it's happening.
But it's not the WiFi or Internet. The weird thing is if this delay is on the Linux I should have seen it even if I was on the same machine. That makes me think this delay is only on the Linux VM and only affecting networking.
Happened again, but I had a Linux VM console open. I lose networking, can't ping the router. Came back 20 seconds later or so. If it was anything related to the hardware it would affect the Windows host.
Gonna disable the firewall on the Linux side, then the windows if that doesn't help.
OK it's quite strange, I lose the ability to ping outside the VM but I can ping the windows host. I wonder if it's an issue with my wireless card, though you would think that would affect the windows side.
I'm going to use a hard wire tonight and see if that helps things, remove the wireless card/driver from the equation.
Last droupout was 46 seconds, Windows host never blinked. Now that I think about it my graphics drivers are all screwy and I'm running off two screens instead of three. Lots of weird issues happening at the same time, seemingly unrelated. Hmm...
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K
Very similar issue, pasting link for tonight:
https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=44625&start=10
Man, this delay stuff is kind of annoying eh guys?
Yeah
FIX THIS FUCKING SITE, so many delays.
At least it's preparing Gantry for his airline experience.
Going to mess with the networking now, it'll go down
Today's been the worst day in recent memory.
Removed old Hyper-V bits and rebooted, doubt it'll do anything. FINGERS CROSSED
Well 11+ minutes of pings with no packet loss - it didn't come close to that earlier in the day. Though maybe it's only bad when there's a lot of traffic. Was it acting shitty after working hours today?
One ping only...
Sorry, had to be done.
Another 11 minute run, if that fixed it I'd be shocked
Let it run all night, 1% packet loss which is way better but that's nearly 400 dropped packets to a simple ping to my router. Not sure I licked it and I don't want to mess with it after I leave the house. Sorry boys
Timed out on my at the office, we're fucked for the next two weeks.
Would have been really fucking nice if it happened at all last night, has to be related to traffic.
Its pretty goofy this morning.
What in the fuck, it's awful now. I'm going try to fix this shit, even though if I royally fuck it up I can't get home before I leave. FUCK YOU for not showing up last night.
Fuck me?
No, the fucking server for being totally fine after I made a change for over an hour. Had it broke yesterday when I was looking at it I would fixed.
Taking this down to switch to the legacy adapter, sorry for short notice.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Gantry, this is unacceptable. I demand an apology.
We're back up, switched to the Hyper-V legacy adapter. Cautiously optimistic
9% packet loss, so it didn't help shit
Next test is to use a different network card but I can't do that remotely. We're definitely fucked until I get back, sorry de snorry
Gonna try a hail mary and throw more RAM at it, even though it has plenty free. Going down again.
We're backup, 0% chance this does anything. Next step is to disable outside ssh, just in case there's a DOS. I re-enabled that a weekish ago.
That didn't help, shocking. Netstat says no ssh connections even attempted but I'll take down ssh just to be sure.
Nada, this is pissing me off. I may have Carly run a data cable from my computer to my router on Wednesday, as I suspect it's something to do with the wireless card/driver no longer playing nice with Hyper-V
Disabled VMQ on the Network Bridge, odds of fixing about 5%
Didn't work LOL
Latest reply said page was not available. Refresh pulled up a "start new topic" page. Strange things are afoot.
Same problem as before, the network drops out for 20-45 seconds at a time. Wasting all my time trying shit I know won't work because the solution (running a hard line short term instead of wifi) I need to do involves me being at home, which I won't be for the next 11 days.
Have you thought about canceling your trip?
Yes
Truth be told, we've thought about canceling you.
Well then its settled. Gantry is staying in Chicago and fixing the internet.
Now one of us is going to have to step up and go to London.

Gonna need Gantry to get back to Chicago and get this figured out, pronto.

Shit's definitely annoying, I plan to blow up everything when I get back. If simply swapping out the WiFi card fixes it I'm gonna be most unhappy.

Total. Bullshit.
a stern letter will be sent from my lawyer to one Mr. Gantry Zettler post haste enumerating the events that have transpired during this period of non-Dee Nee activity including but not limited to: increased production at work, increased time spent with family, and a marked decrease in time spent discussing poop, boobs, and general debauchery.
Was that the longest outage in Dee-Nee history?
Let me know if the network delays still happen, I assume they will as I did nothing to fix that but I want to do one thing at a time.
Not counting the last 20 minutes, where I was humping messing around.
Before the looooong shutdown this week, the forums were also choppy for me. Page wouldn't reload at times and had to press the reload or f5 button. Happened frequently.
That's what I'm mentioning, let me know if it keeps happening.
No hiccups today so far, seems fixed. Welcome back to the mainland, Gantry.

Just happened now after I typed up an entire new puhl and attached post. I am displeased
Anyone else with a delay?
Going to do a 20 minute ping test here to my router and if it loses packets I'll run a hard line.
OK it dropped 3% of the packets to my router and none from my host machine. Going to hook it up via wired ethernet. GOING DOWN BOYS!!
Back up on wired, starting new ping tests.
0% packet loss on 2111 packets, indeed good news. Going to work from the office today, please post ANY loading/posting delays you see today. Most specifically if the page times out and can't be displayed.
Today is the first day I have noticed no problems
Been fine so far.
If this works I'm going to install a new WiFi card tonight. I'm at the office so I should hopefully see the timeouts if they come back. But keep posting any issues today
I clicked on a link earlier and it took me to a really strange tentacle porn website...
This of course was a link I found on google after I searched for "Tentacle OR Octopi rams bowling balls into orifice of unwilling teens"
So I dont know if this related to dee-nee or not, but it bares mentioning.
noted
Can you find anymore of those?
Included a couple with the Telex paperwork to take Obi back to Chicago. Please to read
Working perfectly today, gantry.
Maybe you should just stick with a wired connection, buster.
no
Yeah, you wouldn't want something that reliable. It would prove just how easily you can be replaced.
By a $3 length of cable.
Cards go bad, wired and wireless. Small switches go out at a much higher rate than either of those. I don't want this cable running along my floor.
Are you saying that aesthetics are more important than the reliability of Dee-Nee?
I have new floors, guy
Don't forget about the windows
And patio door.
Your home's value is skyrocketing. Dare I say it's back up to half of what you paid for it?
That's the American Dream!
And I'm probably taking this bad boy down for a bit to switch to the new WiFi card. May do tomorrow though, when you get up at 4am you have plenty of time to kill in the morning.
Gantry, aren't you a computer guy for a living? Your clients must be screwed.
Nope, I just care way more about them than you guys
Just to show how little I care, I'm changing to the wifi right now. GOING DOWN BOYS

Report any timeouts starting.... NOW
Someone post something so I know we're up.
Same dropouts, guess I'm rocking a wire full time. GOING DOWN BOYS

Logged on for first time tonight. Timed out.
Yeah had the same just happen to me...the only difference I didn't have work today due to President's day and did not leave the house. Fkn ICY APOCALYPSE
Yep, overnight pings still dropping packets with the new WiFi adapter - something to do with Hyper-V and wireless. Time to go with a wire. Shutting down to take out the old card, GOING DOWN BOYS.
I remember dee nee before the dreaded London trip...
Back up, on a cable and using my new video card. Life should be good
No issues thus far this morning. Well done, sir. Well done.
Power is out let's see how long the UPS batteries last. I love you all
I would have gone FedEx.
Think the one that keeps the router up will give it before the PC one. Gonna be a doozy!
I was way off, PC UPS with the big old battery didn't last more than 25 minutes, while the tiny one that only powered the router/wifi never went down. Power is back, we're up.
Rebooting at 6pm to run the new kernel, RELAX
I made a REALLY GOOD post at six, but it didn't appear because the connection timed out. It was like a paragraph long so I'll never retype it. I hope new popcorn was worth missing out on a life changing post, GANTRY

Have a all-in-one memory card reader I have to install and a reboot for updates, so we'll be down for 15 minutes at an undisclosed time this evening. WHEN WILL IT BE?
Seems like a good time, taking it down in 5
EVERYTHING IS OK, OK?
more like going down on boys amirite?!?!
About to step out of the house and we lose power short term, my UPS decides not to work or turn back on after power is restored. Guess I'm on power strips until tonight...
You unprepared fuck.

8)
Got the "new" UPS here and will install tonight after 9pm. When exactly I'm not sure hopefully I'll give heads up
What are the power requirements of this "new" UPS? I've never seen one lower than 30 amp 240 volt.
Nope, these are meant to run on normal 120/15 lines, basically anything with a battery to prevent power loss is called a UPS. This is a higher one rated at 1500VA that does line conditioning, though it's quite old. Most cheap UPSes basically provide the outlet power and switch to the battery when it senses a loss, these provide clean power from the battery and use the outlet power to charge it. This lets you filter from brownouts, spikes, etc.
Here's the one I'm using, though a much older model:
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT1500
We'll shut down in exactly one hour

This fkn UPS has a fan that runs all the time, this may be a short lived upgrade.

Nope yesterday was Taco Bell / Noodles & Company
Day before was Chipotle and then went with zucchini pasta / red peppers / jalapenos - I think the latter did me in. They were fresh from the garden stuff from mom and the lady from work, the peppers looked a little dicey.
Going to put that UPS and another backup drive in tomorrow night. Expect downtime about 9pm, half hour or so
And if I'm feeling sassy I may do the Windows 10 upgrade at the same time. So it could be a long one people, PREPARE

Easy enough fix, WE'RE BACK IN BUSINESS BABY
Allow me to clarify.

Whoops, forgot to change Hyper-V to start the VM on reboot. My bad...
Memory upgrade to my computer, GOING DOWN BOYS. Should only be a few
Back up, unfortunately the new RAM isn't compatible with my old RAM, so nothing was gained. Time to get another $15 pair of sticks from EBay and shipped from China
What does it take? I have a ton of RAM laying around here
Some form of DDR2, the key was finding 4GB sticks of the same kind. Going from 8 to 16GB, the Hong Kong stuff doing the job - just didn't play nice with my existing 2GB sticks. Already ordered another 8GB for $15 shipped.
And it's here, GOING DOWN AGAIN TONIGHT BOYS! Say 8:30pm?
Nope.
Perfect, 8:30 it is
Look guy, I've got some important legume related business scheduled for that time.
Fell asleep early last night, same time tomorrow? Earlier? Good, 8pm it is...
Bad news man, the Council of Legumes didnt get everything finished, and are planning another meeting tonight...
I can't set my clock to their incompetence, I have my own incompetence to set it to!
Lets make is 8:30, my Red Beans n' Rice will be done just before 8.
Well that was fun - would blue screen if I added both new sticks and would't POST at all with just one in. So two sets of down times, two RAM purchases and we're back to the same system we were at before. TECHNOLOGY

Were the forums down for like a half hour? I even texted gantry!!!!
My router at home is flaky, Comcast is coming at 3-7 to replace today. Expect random ups and downs
Seems so. Luckily I haven't fully regained my dependence on DeeNee, so i had no withdrawal symptoms this time.
Timing sucked, I noticed the flakiness just before my trip so I couldn't replace it last week. So struggle with it today yall, probably would be better with a reboot but I just got to the office, not driving back for a few hours.
I'm going to send you so many impatient texts.
I have no doubt this modem swap is going to take way longer than it should. I have business class Comcast at my house and sometimes they send a residential person who has no idea what they are doing. Then they'll fuck up the static IP.

Virtual...
That reminds me, Comcast gave me a new modem/router and its features are ass (can't disable ipv6 DHCP giving out Comcast DNS servers, fucks up my internal network) so I'm putting in a Ubiquiti Edgerouter X (https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x/) tomorrow. As a result my IP will change and DNS will take awhile to propagate. So late tomorrow night you may not be able to get to the forums. Deal with it.
Now that I think about it, I'll probably move all the WiFi devices to the new router/IP tomorrow and keep the main machine on the current IP. So it won't go down tomorrow, some other night after I've tested it and am confident in it. But I won't tell you what day...
Interested in your review of the EdgeRouter X. Currently have a freebie Sonicwall in place but may go ubiquiti when I'm ready to put the old ASUS wifi out to pasture.
I actually was going to put in an old Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT but couldn't get more than 40 megabits out of the WAN port. I already have the UniFi access point so I'm pretty excited about powering it via the router. Too excited, actually...
Big fan of Sonicwalls, bunch of my clients have them. WAN ports can slow down considerably when you turn on all the features though, but recent models likely fixed that.
I've got a TP-LINK Archer C7 and it works great.
Heard good things...
I have that as well (partially at Gantry's recommendation, via Amazon reviews), and we've been very happy with it.
TP-Link makes good hardware for their price range, everything I used has been pretty solid.
Got my new Edgerouter X, unplugging the Comcast modem so we'll be down for a bit. 5 seconds enough heads up?
WE ARE BACK
That wasn't enough heads up.
You sure?
5 minute reboot time on a brand new modem, Comcast should devote some resources to quickening that process

Think I'll switch to the new IP tonight, say 10pm? It'll be quick, but DNS may take a bit to catch up. So get all your nightly fun in by 10
Bulkregister says between 30 minutes and an hour for TTL and you can't change it, weak sauce. So that's the downtime.
This is outrageous!
Well since it's raining out and I can't make my walk to the library I'll have more time. So 9?
Staying busy, we'll shift back to 10pm
Changed host records, making the switch in 10 minutes
Switch took seconds, we'll see how long DNS caching takes.
Hairpin NAT works a treat, this UniFi Edgerouter X is a nice little box
Been rewiring and hooking up new UPS, there was some down time. Going to fiddle with the coax cable as well, so another couple minutes of downtime sometimes this afternoon. I'll let it be a surprise...
So my brand new fucking router reset, for no reason. Soft reset, better not happen again or I'm cracking skulls
UPDATE, new router hasn't reset.
Going to install a new SSL cert tonight, probably between viewings of Stranger Things. Down time minimal but could have some random outages. Will post before I get started.
No fucking way.
I think my brand new fucking router rebooted again, was driving to work so wasn't sure how long it was down. Anyone have a timeframe? Gotta have Comcast schelp out here yet again.
Not impressed with Lets Encrypt, sorry about that
How about Let's Active?
Oh good, my fucking router rebooted again as well. Time to get it replaced yet again.
How about we just replace YOU!
I'd like that, actually
HI EVERYONE
What kind of two-bit operation is this?
I take it back. This is a one-bit operation at best.
I prefer the 8-bit variety or Alphabits.
OHAI
So there's a tapatalk update that errors out on install, an SMF update and attempt #3 at getting an SSL cert - going to just pay for it and not dick around with LetsEncrypt. Going to be a busy evening, save all your work
Doing SSL now, shit may very well break.
Well fuck, I was a couple minutes from having it work last time, nothing to see here. New SSL cert installed via Let's Encrypt, take that patently absurd Certificate Authority system! Well it's still patently absurd but they ain't getting my money.
SMF upgrade next.
Two for two! Now fkn tapatalk, not gonna lie I probably won't waste much time on this. Because I don't use it and it sucks.
About half a dozen install steps fail, I'm not fucking with it. Fuck you...
New button looks smaller on the Curve theme, no?

So outbound emails haven't been working since August 18th, would explain the lack of new members. Hard to sign up if you don't get the activation email...
Yeah. Let's use that as a reason why we've had like 3 new members since 2008.
There were a good 5 accounts waiting for activation. One was a second account named SNICKERS (I won't say who but check your email XYZ@utulsa.edu) and one was blatant spam. That would be 3 potential new users, assuming I didn't screw up the resending of the activation email. Which I likely did...
Fingers crossed that deathboner clicks that email
Wait, you mean someone was trying to cheat that fucking candy tournament by registering as Snickers?
Some of you people cant be trusted.
This is a huge scandal, but Nacho's supporters won't care, though.
Well I assume said unknown person was going to post as snickers, as if they wanted to be anonymous for voting they wouldn't use that name. The last registered member is always shown on the main page.
That said, none of you can be trusted.
Can I be trusted?
Can Gantry be trusted to say that no one can be trusted?

So for the 3rd time in the last week (twice in the last 12 hours), the server has run out of memory. Last time this happened some fuck from France was DOS'ing me - making so many connections to my server that the (admittedly meager) memory ran out. Blocked that set of IPs before, looks like I'll have to chase them around again.
And of course I'm going out of town tomorrow so the forums will likely go down when I'm away. Have fun!
Think it's related to that Apache security bug from a couple days ago, systems are scanning the internet in droves looking for insecure systems. I don't use said insecure system but that doesn't stop people from trying over and over.

Kernel update & Win10 updates, rebooting about 8:30
So my computer just rebooted while working on it, never seen that before. Bought my hardware for a new system, looks like it's time to build it. Will setup a new test VM shortly after that too as the RHEL6 I'm using is getting long in the tooth and I can't upgrade my wiki software because of old php versions.

Have a new workstation for home, likely going to move the VM for Dee-Nee to it tomorrow super early if there's a break in the wrestling I'm getting up at 3am for. If any of you freaks are on at 5am, expect some downtime. Or not...
So just me then?

Well Comcast having issues, so things are up and down - mostly down.
Going to put the backup drive in the new server/workstation today, say 8pm? SATA is supposed to be hotswap, but that shit never seems to work when I try it. But there's a chance I don't have to shut down...
You may want to check when the big fruit poll closes before scheduling any downtimes.
Good call, I'll consult with the fruit committee post haste...
So I'm gonna take it down now...
Holy balls this thing is fast, back up...
Heck, going down again
Shit this is going so well that I'm going to migrate machines now. Nobody is online anyway, #sorrynotsorry

They would but Gantry snores.
Did an upgrade, almost broke the world. Had to impulse install PHP 5.6 - that was fun.
9:40ish rebooting for Windows Updates, may just do a full vhd backup as well for shits and giggles. Since I upgraded php on the server for the last forum update, I should really try to get the RBI and Chicago Punk wikis on newer versions of Mediawiki. A full backup is probably best in case it goes to hell.
So yeah, likely a 20+ minute downtime late tonight.
Given the election news, we'll delay this 45 minutes or so
WE'RE BACK
Windows 10 version 1803 just came out, installing right away seems like a great idea. Will reboot somewhat soon. Enjoy!
Well, the VM wouldn't boot. SO WE'RE BACK TO 1709

Goes without saying, but report any access issues in this thread. The one downside to this new line is the Dee-Nee server is now WiFi instead of wired, as the router is in the basement. Tried this once awhile back with bad results, but the $$$ savings were worth your pain.
If I can't access the site, how am I supposed to report the issue in this thread?
Pro tip - if you use the USB ports next to your power button, configure the power settings to not do anything when you press said button by accident.

We got an Apple IIC, with a robust 128K. This was in 1993, after my dad's school (he also worked for CPS) upgraded their computers. So we got a computer that was too outdated for use by a tremendously underfunded school system.
Got a Packard Bell Pentium 60 MHz with 8 MB RAM in 1995, though.
1993 was laughably late for an Apple IIC, remember any of the games you played on it?
my first computer was a TI-99/4A. 16K of RAM. A bit later we got the Peripheral Expansion Box which added a whopping 32K of RAM.
If computers continue to improve at this rate....

Yes. The two biggest hits between my brother and I were Mines of Titan and Family Feud. There was also a Mario Bros clone that we spent quite a bit of time playing. Games were hard to come by since the computer came from an educational environment and by that time, not many other people still had one for use as their primary computer.
Family Feud was always fun/frustrating regardless of system. Don't recall Mines of Titan
got really good at math munchers as a kid. if you beat a couple levels they'd let you play oregon trail. the key was to have enough time to race thru the trail during the period, which were 45 minutes
For whatever reason, I don't know that our computer lab had Number Munchers (although my wife remembers it as her favorite elementary school computer game). We played lots of Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego, and I remember an extended time when we played a game called Cross Country USA, a trucking simulator where you had to plan your routes on real-life maps and decide whether to speed in order to get to your destination faster (but with increased risk that you would get into an accident or get a speeding ticket).
that trucking game sounds awesome
by 6th grade, we installed drug wars with some other games on all the lab server whatever in a system of hidden folders.
we also used to mess with people's computers with tight vnc. not sure if having the detention kids link up all the computers after school was a great idea or an amazing idea
Mines of Titan is an RPG that is best described as a futuristic, dystopian Might and Magic with an overhead combat view.
I want to play Cross Country USA.

Dunno, my WiFi on my main PC has been shit since I put in the new video card. I think there's interference and I should move it to a more isolated slot. Tonight seems like a good time to do that, 8pm? Good

So I guess yesterday's Windows Updates didn't go as planned, eh?
I have a personal Windows PC hooked up through the KVM switch at my desk, and the update also indirectly prevented it from sleeping overnight - I installed the beta Xbox PC app on it, and it appears that the app prevents your computer from going to sleep. It also launches on boot, so when the forced reboot happened overnight the computer wouldn't go back to sleep.
Mine was much tamer - on reboot my PC connected to the default WiFi network of my router (which I must have used for testing one time) instead of my main WiFi network. Therefore none of the networking worked right as it has a static IP in the main network. Whoops
So how long were we down?
By my count, around 3 years or so now...but declining for a solid five before that.
Gantry, when are we going to see the roll out of those recruiting campaigns that were approved at the last dee nee board meeting?
It's still in committee, my hands are tied
I updated our database server from mysql 5.1 to 5.5 without you even noticing 8)
Pretty reckless to do during the day but that's how I roll
i did notice, i just didn't care
Going to install Win10 1909 shortly, will probably fuck things up. Too bad
We're back, omg
I panicked
When are you gonna install WinAmp?
I'm not
Don't be a fool
We got a lot of overdue updates, so probably going to get this rolling tonight. Going to be down for awhile as I want to make a complete backup of the VHD file first. Then update php with the webserver disabled. If all goes well there I'll do the SMF updates. If not I'll save those for tomorrow.
Anyway, 8:30ish we're going down, probably for an hour. Make backup plans.
15 minutes people
Wow, php 7.3 upgrade was the easiest thing ever.
Too easy going to leave up for a bit to make sure all is up to snuff and test the wikis, have at it for 20 minutes.
Test 2.0.16 upgrade
OK and now 2.0.17
THIS SHIT IS TOO EASY
2.0.16 upgrade makes you login again. Let's see how many of you idiots don't remember your passwords.
For some reason my desktop upstairs wouldn't let me log back in last night after the reboot (it was telling me that something timed out)... I was all ready to send you a text and then I tried it on two other computers and it worked fine, so (shrug).
There was some security change that killed all login sessions and forced people to log back in. I'm guessing there's going to be a few old cookie issues or something. I can't even remember the last time I logged out on my main PC, some of you have probably gone 5+ years without logging in.
I've probably logged into dee-nee less than 20 times in the almost 15 years I've been on this site and I remembered my password with ease, unlike countless other passwords I've forgotten
I log in every day, sometimes multiple times a day.
I got mine on the fifth try. Persistence, bitches!

Security check up on Google account. 6 passwords possibly breached. Those were on the list. No link to where they got the info from.
Ran it via LastPass and didn't get that. And again RBI Central doesn't even have a password system, maybe nightwulf's editor they are talking about?
That would make sense, since it's in the rbicentral.com domain.

If you ever thought, man I want to completely regret switching from apache to nginx, you should check out centminmod dot com
Pretty slick to get more performance out of less hardware.
Good to know, thanks. In general these forums and wikis use so little resources the VM isn't making any real impact. And I have a business class internet here at the house with a static IP so I have a decent enough pipe to run it.
I get $100 a month in free credit from Microsoft Azure, so really it's a little silly to run it at home. That said dee-nee takes very little hand holding and maintenance at this point, kind of in "if it ain't broke" mode. At least until CentOS/RHEL6 stop getting security updates. After that I'll have to make a decision about switching things up.

That said dee-nee takes very little hand holding and maintenance at this point, kind of in "if it ain't broke" mode. At least until CentOS/RHEL6 stop getting security updates. After that I'll have to make a decision about switching things up.
That's December this year (have a bunch of old shitty work machines for legacy systems to upgrade).
Ugh, that's not ideal. We may be raw dogging it until I get back from Mexico then, assuming I get to Mexico.
Shit, I can probably run Dee-Nee easily on the Raspberry Pi I'm using for PiHole.
What about a raspberry beret?
What kind of raspberry beret?
The kind that you find in a second-hand store.
That'll do

Sorry yall, rebooting a shitload of times right now. Dicking around with VPN software for my client and every install/uninstall requires a reboot.
I think we deserve some sort of compensation for the inconvenience.
Agreed. Prorate this shit.
IT'S WORKING AGAIN EVERYONE - for those who guess "Sonicwall's App Control service broke my clients softphone over VPN" you win a cookie.
What kind of cookie?

Just lost power, been stormy all am. May have to shut down.
Power restored, thank u
One of the fans in my PC is randomly squeaking, going to power it down, take it outside and dust it all out - which I guarantee will do nothing. 10ish minutes of downtime tonight, how does "whenever I feel like it" sound to yall?
Now seems good...
OK we're back and now the fan is REALLY fkn loud.
So it didn't do nothing!
I went to get the screwdriver to open it up and locate said noise, when I came back it was gone.
PERFECT! For your hard work at fixing it, you deserve a Fresca.
I have Pacifico, acceptable?
SMF update, will install 4ish this afternoon if work cooperates. Should be little-to-no downtime unless something fucks up.
Actually, might as well back up my VM file first, so 5-10 minutes of downtime.
Reminder I'm shutting things down to back up, let's say 4:30.
Is this the beta test for dee-nee 2.0?
Yes
I fucking knew it.
Well I'm watching the Penn State wrestling dual and need to use a VPN. Can't access Dee-Nee's ssh from said VPN, so how about we start after this dual ends? Good? Good!
No fucking way.
We're halfway through 174
OK Wisconsin didn't start their heavyweight and we missed the best matchup of the dual, fuck you. Starting shortly, GOING DOWN BOYS
WE ARE UPGRADED, ENJOY THE 2.0.18 FEATURESET
omg it's so fast
This is insanity.
forum is slow af today
like tony armas slow
Upgraded my WiFi access point, you should notice absolutely no difference.
But hey, I'm excited!
Going to swap wireless cards for one that does Bluetooth and WiFi, it's CRITICAL that I have wireless headphones so much deaf ass can hear shit when the purifier is on and I walk away from the desk.
How does tomorrow evening sound? Or say 8:30 tonight?
Wait a second, I'm gonna need you to submit that request (in triplicate!!!!!!) in Sharepoint for approval from your regional.
UPDATE - decided just to buy a USB Bluetooth device for $13.93 instead of changing all my network setup. Downtime avoided
Said USB adapter made you reboot for some fkn reason, hopefully nobody noticed.
I fucking knew it.

UPDATE - this micro sized USB BT adapter has shit range, I can't even make it to the bathroom without my headphones breaking up. Looks like I'll be installing the WiFi/BT combo card after all, sometime tomorrow. STAY TUNED
Slow morning, think I'll get start shortly. Thx
WE DID IT. Range improved a little but still can get choppy in the pisser. Better in the basement though, we'll chalk it up as a success
better see a urologist just to be safe
I'll just stick a railroad spike up there, should cure what ails me
Computer update and reboot tonight at a random time? Sounds good!
I prefer (legally aged) boys going down, personally.
OK getting started, some down time coming. You'll be fine
Look how easy that was, and you were worried!
SMF has a rare update, will do it at 8pm. I'll also backup the whole VM file since I had a scare last night. Turned out to be a DNS provider issue but a good reminder to get a whole hog backup.
So we'll do it at 8pm, for 20-30 mins depending on how long it takes to backup .
No. Fucking. Way.
Management always appreciates ur understanding, ty
GETTING STARTED
Backed up and installed, everyone here? Some install warnings that like any good sysadmin I simply ignored, perhaps some surprises down the road!
Where else would we be?
Purgatory?
Or maybe the Texas Brazil steakhouse place?
I got nowhere else to go!
What about The Metaverse?
Hows the porn there?

Here I am playing checkers with Texas Roadhouse and Fogo de Chao while you're checkmating my ass with (scrolls up) Texas de Brazil
One of my favorite porterhouses
I still wanna know where the down boys go.
AT&T has had a hell of a morning in Chicago.
I blame you and you alone.
As our proud leader and sole proprietor of dee-nee you should be able to meet the expectations of your userbase. In this task you have failed. As a result, I have decided to run for president of the universe so that I may end you tyrannical reign. This may or may be related to you once banning me for saying that Jose Rijo smelled of salted meats.
A Supra in every pot?
I respect your decision, godspeed
Whoa, SMF 2.1 finally came out after like 2 years of beta or something crazy like that.
Dee-Nee 2.0 may be a real thing!
Are you finally adding support for NFT avatars so I can show off all my apes?
yes?
It will be a huge upgrade because we are running on a now out-of-date Linux distribution called CentOS 6 which is based on Red Hat. So not only do I have to upgrade the forums but the entire operating system as well.
Do I have the energy/patience to do it? STAY TUNED
We don't need to hear about how the sausage gets made, just make it.
Gantry is setting us up for April Fools tomorrow
Well my PC locked up and I've been in Ohio, big props to forum member Pants for going over and power cycling it.
I have a smart outlet hooked up to my servers so I can remotely power cycle them, will do the same for this one when I get back. It's been so reliable that I've never needed to, lesson learned.
I think an apology is in order
That was quite unpleasant
I'm filing a lawsuit immediately.
Such a cock.
Sources are telling me that this is all a precursor to Elon Musk buying the place.
I died several hundred times while the forums were down.
Good. I'm tired of Gantry censoring me. This is a public website. FREEDOM OF SPEECH
No need to worry. Not only am I filing a lawsuit. My lawyer said he thinks class action is the way to go. Everyone can get in on the money grab.
Did you say MONEY CRAB?

Handsome Devil that fancy crab.
I'd really like to know that gantry feels badly about what he did. But from where I'm sitting there's no remorse
i'm sure it's nice to feel needed
Dee-Nee 2.0 should definitely fix everything.
Wow that was a scary few days. Also I now have an infection my right eye? Could gantry be behind that as well?
Gantry is behind your eye! He's shrunk himself down and he's Innerspacing you!
Have you been hearing any Sam Cooke songs lately?
TEMPO GOT US BACK UP
Me rn
Is this dee-new 2.0 brought to us by Strassy!?
Gantry, care to explain yourself?
Nope
Up super early thanks to getting used to east coast time, so we're back up on a dedicated smart outlet. I no longer have to call Dee-Nee "lamp" to Alexa if it locks up again.
So the hard drive I used for backups of this server died and was causing my PC at home not to boot.
Good news - we're up.
Bad news - we have no backups anymore.
Not even me?
Test
Christ guy, the backups were still running and used up all our disk space since the backup drive was, you know, gone. So it just backed up to the same drive the main data was on. This site is a shit show, time to upgrade
About 7am I'm going to power down to install the new drive and blow the dust out of this bad boy. Deal with it
OK back up, couldn't figure out how to get the old/bad hard drive out of my fancy case so I said fuck it. Gives me more incentive to get on Dee-Nee 2.0 sooner rather than later as the nightly backups are disabled
Left it down 24 hours longer than it should have been, totally forgot I installed a smart plug until I was replying to Beefy's text. Ergo, Beefy saved Dee-Nee
YOU'RE ALL WELCOME
I was near the Dee Nee house yesterday and was going to offer to reset things, but then I remembered Gantry had installed a smart plug
This sounds like the extended downtime is everyone else's fault, someone should have reminded me about it.

Where was Gantry during all of this??
Ohio
Ah. You going to Mexico again this winter?
Got home from Ohio yesterday and had weird crashings in both Firefox and Chrome, just now got a blue screen and the computer rebooted. I think one of my memory sticks is bad, going to run a memory test and take things offline for about 30 mins, go to bed.
Well the test failed right away, I bought some memory and will have it on Wednesday. Only replacing 2 of the 4 sticks so it'll be a guessing game, yay
When the memory gets here today, expect an hour or so of downtime as the memory tests will take awhile. It'll be sometime after dark, deal with it.
OK the memory is here and work it slow, I'm starting in 10 minutes. deal with it.
Service with a fkn smile, here
OK the memtest took quite a bit longer than I remember, but I'm pretty sure I found the faulty RAM stick.
Guess what, BLUETOOTH SUCKS. Rebooting to get my headphones back.
OK well I decided to update the BIOS as well and it fucked around with my virtual machine network setup. But we're good now right?
Quote from: Gantry on 12/22/22, 05:37:08 PM

No, but it got a triple double

Locked up again, had to use the smart plug. God dammit...
More reason to get on dee-nee 2.0, plan to migrate to the new hardware (which already runs the wikis and Dee-Nee proper) when I get back. Will bump that thread when I'm stateside.
I'm setting up the SSL certificate on the new forums, so I have to change the DNS.
Long story short, the forums may not work for 10-15 minutes shortly. ok
OK, dee-nee 2.0 has a working certificate. It's now 0.1% done
My machine took a shit, running on a temporary which may very well be the permanent server. yay
Is it a 486 with 8MB of RAM?
yes
Try pressing the Turbo button
run the defrag utility
Pentium 90 Tower or riot
AT&T's yearly outage is apparently over
We will learn from this and come back stronger than ever.
Every time the first massive cold day of the season hits I lose it for a day or two. Three years in a row from checking my texts from the at&t text update number.
Maybe Dee-Nee should winter in Mexico while you stay in Chicago?
I shall give it strong consideration...

llol
Dee-Nee to the cloud? AWS/GCP/Azure? Can't cost too much to host.
Dee-Nee doesn't need 99.9999% uptime, hosting it at home is fine by me.
Gantry loves bare metal
Dee-Nee runs as a VM
pretty sure I've mentioned it before, but this thread always takes me to the last post when clicking the New button even if there were new posts prior to the last one. And when the last post was on page 37 earlier today, it took me to a blank page 38 even though there were no posts on page 38.

no idea
Fucking around with the firewall, shit will be up and down a bit
Oh, forgot to mention that the island had no power this am. Turned everything off last night, but hey we're back.
Looks like SMF 2.1.5 and 2.1.6 came out in June and I missed them. Going to update them nowish, something breaks post here.
OK well we're updated, but I had to remove some custom update of Subs.php I did in April and don't remember why. Something with smileys, maybe someone has a better memory than me?
I feel like it was related to something that kept coming up in the logs, but who knows.

I'm having issues uploading an avatar.
Any details would be good, what is it doing or saying?
Getting error messages just trying to upload a pic:

try uploading just a generic/blank headshot that's kind of in the shape of a person, that might work

Think I fixed it, apparently if you have an apostrophe in your little quote under your pic you can't change your pic.
