Secret Passage in the Outfield

I just had an interesting occurance today... Schofield hit a laser right down the line which ended up getting stuck in the stands.  My roommate was able to use that opening in the corner of the outfield wall to climb into the stands, get the ball, and throw it home.  This got me wondering, has anyone ever caught a foul fly ball in the stands?  I have tried a few times and your outfielder does have time to make it into the seats before the ball falls on a very high popup.  It would possibly be the coolest RBI defensive play ever to make a catch running through the stands.

I have also seen the outfielder go get the ball that's stuck in the stands but honestly I'd never thought about trying to field a foul popup that way.  Might be worth a try.

Yes, if you throw the ball in the stands in the outfield corner, you can go in and get it, I've never seen a ball in the stands caught

I'm pretty sure you can only walk into the stands if a ball ended up there.  I think it's some sort of programming error where the field gets extended because the ball ended up outside the normal boundaries....

So catching a foul ball is probably not doable because

1)  You can only go in the stands when a ball get thrown in there

2)  The instant a ball goes past the walls it is called "Foul" and catching it still wouldn't be an out.  I think we've actually caught balls right near the wall but were called Foul, hence no out.  I'll have to double-check with the crew on that one...

I tested it just now by playing a two player game and hitting one down the line then running my outfielder into the crowd.  You can run into the stands whether the ball is in there or not, but there is only a small area in the crowd that you can move him around in.  You are probably right though Gantry that the ball would be called foul anyway.  I've seen it happen a few times where the fielder dives against the wall near first or third and catches the ball after its been called foul.

Wow, that is interesting...  So is this passage directly in the corner of the outfield walls?  I'll have to give it a shot...

Just did some testing and RockRaines is correct, you can go into the stands at any point.  You have to be near the outfield corner, slightly in foul territory.  Run straight down and you'll go in the stands.  Can't go too far, but a neat trick nonetheless.  Works on both sides of the field.  I'm going to try to make a video...

Making any sort of play out there is not possible.  I ran many, many experiments with this in my tenth year of life.

Back in the day, my friend and I would try for hours to pop fouls into the stands to try that catch.  Came close a few times but it never worked . . .
