I'm playing the computer last night.  My pitcher hits a slow roller, just off the first base line.  1st basemen fields the ball, and no one yet there to cover first.  I'm expecting the throw away up the right field line, but no.  The first basemen runs to first barely beating the runner.  I thought the computer always threw on these, anyone ever seen this happen?

The "smart play" glitch. I'm with you there. He pretty much always throws it at the base, even if nobody is covering.

That's prett strange.  Did he barehand it as well?

I just wiped my ass then smelled the toilet paper.  What's wrong with me?

the dude either has some high float or a mess between the cheeks.

Forgot to mention that this was on the Arcade, maybe it has better fielding logic.

You know, I'm not sure if the fielder does run to the base.  I think the first basemen does run to first, but I'm not positive...

On the NES, I can't remember ever seeing the fielder run to a base.  It may have happened a long time ago, but I don't remember.  I haven't played the Arcade enough to know.  Maybe it was just the perfect situation that triggered it, runner was close enough to the fielder or something.

I get so little computer action in that it's tough for me to remember.  But the CPU does run to a base if you are running to a base that has a fielder with the ball.  After you get a little past halfway, he runs after you...

Correct, they will run you back to the base you came from after catching the ball at a base.  But I don't think the player that fields the ground ball even runs.  At least until yesterday, I never thought it happened.

This is the way I always thought it worked:

If you hit a ball that the first baseman goes for but the second baseman actually fields...the second baseman will throw it to an empty first base.  If the the first baseman fields it, he will run to first.

I now wipe my ass after every time I take a piss

I never realized the first basemen would run to first, it must not happen very often (I guess usually it's the 2nd basemen or pitcher that fields and throws to uncovered 1st base).  Next time a get a chance I might try to ground to 1st a few times and see what happens.

Gantry and CurtFlood were absolutely correct, 1st  basemen always runs to first.  I don't know what I was thinking.  The type of  hit was a somewhat unusual hit to see the 1st basemen field, so it just looked strange to me.

At least the CPU has some common sense...
