OK...everybody hates the standard C to 2B throw or the 2B to catcher throw.  they always seem so slow and lame.  I always figured that part of it was a matter of perspective given that we're not viewing the field from directly overhead.

Anyway, I did a rather non-scientific test to see if the C to 2B throw was any different in speed than the 1B to 3B throw.

I attempted to see how many throws back and forth (both standard "slow" throws and quick throws) I could get in a one minte time frame...here's what I found:

Slow/standard throws:
C to 2B: 26 throws back and forth in one minute
1B to 3B: 26 throws back and forth in one minute

Quick throws:
C to 2B: 36 throws in one minute
1B to 3B: 36 throws in one minute

Given that the number of throws in a minute are equal and the distance between 1B and 3B is equal to the C to 2B distance, the C to 2B/2B to C throw is just as good as the "cross the diamond throw.

I would assume that with enough inginuity you can come up with a similar test to see f the centrefielder doesn't suck like everyone thinks he does.   Its all perspective, man!

Very interesting results, someone should setup an outfield test as well.  Good job

When throwing from the catcher to the 2B hold down while throwing.  It's not exactly a shitty throw.
Good research.

I personally would have guessed that the throw from 1b to 3b would be shorter than 2b to C, which is what I got out of this...

fknmclane

Yeah, the throw to the corners has got to be shorter.  90 feet to the corners, over 100 to second.

mclane, read the whole post again.  He showed that the throws to the corners takes the same amount of time as from c to 1b...

On that note, I'm having a brain fart.  Why is the distance from 1b to 3b different than the difference between c and 2b in real baseball?  Ain't it 90 feet to each base?

BeefMaster

I don't think it is different.  The distance from the mound to each base is different (3B and 1B are the same), though, but that's because 60'6 isn't the exact middle between second and home.  Otherwise, the "diamond" is indeed a regular, 90'x90' square.

Well, I'm a complete jackass.  Just read the post and actually comprehended it.  Reading comprehension is fun.  I'm gonna go ahead and shut up now.

Yes...the distance between 1st to 3rd and the distance between C and 2nd is exactlythe same...roughly 127.3 feet, I believe.  So same distance, same time to throw the ball equals all infielders having the same throwing ability.

Now who wants to test the outfield theory???  I haven't figured out how to do it.

Yeah, this is Richard from Los Angeles. Long time listener, first time caller. I love the show, it's the best thing on. Could you tell me if the distance between 1B and 3B is different than the distance between C and 2B? I'll hang up and take the answer off the air."

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

Yeah, this makes a good deal of sense, but you know what I've discovered about the center fielder because of this?

The center fielder sucks.

Perspective or not, he's just a frickin' JOBBER. If the perspective screws you up in the infield, it's 3 times as bad in the outfield. Repeat: The center fielder sucks.

Anyway, enough of this for now; I'm going to go play Rush 'n' Attack on my Real Nintendo before I drink too much, pass out and do badly in the 100m butterfly.
