It's a two percent difference between Boston and Detroit. Please stop drama queening over two fucking percent.

Nightwulf

Well if you use Detroit instead of Boston, then you are 70% more likely to have a BOP on each fielding play, that is a significant difference.

I would have to disagree with the statement that Detroit has the best D.  I personally play with Detroit and if it was not for their offense they would suck.  Their defense is slow as shit which causes too many balls to squeak by the third baseman.  Hell,  my second baseman dropped two pop flys in a row against my brother today.  I believe that since throwing is so similar between the teams that speed is the biggest factor in the quality of defense.  Which Detroit sucks at.  They also seem to have more errors too than other teams . (Not sure if it is just me or actually programmed into game)

Dryden

There are so many ways to pick this apart, it hardly seems worth it...

Gantry, is there a way to make people read the FAQ before they can post on the site?  This is getting a mite silly, methinks.

Dear Herndon Sucks,

All teams are the same speed on D.  It's just your imagination that it isn't.  Throwing is identical, too.  If one team throws better, it's because you happen to have better technique.  You can make a better or worse throw, read the FAQ.  Detroit does make more errors, it is programmed into the game.  Whether you think they do or not, it's probably all in your head, since the difference is barely observable.

Have a nice day.

why does everyone have to be so serious all the time...if he wants to think detroit is the best D, let him think that. so when you play him you can kick his ass!

I don't believe the difference is barely observable, in fact many of us observed Detroit making more BOPs before it was even known as fact.  If you commonly match up Boston and Detroit you will notice significantly more errors made by Detroit.

But then there are all the games where they make no errors...

Look, based on Nightwulf's numbers, Detroit will make 47 errors per 1000 chances, and Boston will make 27 per 1000.  In a 9 inning game, I usually get about 45-50 AB (you may be a much better player than I am).  So Detroit averages about 2.5 errors per game for me, while boston has about 1.5.  It's observable, certainly, but when people say that they had Detroit make 3 errors in one game, it's just chance.  Measure over several hundred games (and really measure - don't just say "It seemed like blah") and the results should bear this out.

I have no idea why we're even still discussing it.  Jim, this horse is dead.

Correct, 1 game is not a sample size, but with the quantitiy that many of us have play it certainly can be noticed.

damn,  I guess your right.  After reading your post I went and played and realized that the speed is the same for the teams.  I must have just never payed much attention.  But,  I would argue that Detroits errors are more than barely observable compared to other teams.

JoeDirt

I agree with Ultimate that Detroit's error % is siginificantly higher than the rest of the field.  I don't think you can look at it in terms of only 1-2% points higher than the rest; rather, it must be evaluated in relative terms--as almost 2x as high as the other teams...

For example, is there much of a difference between a .260 batting average and a .300 batting average?  Technically speaking, a .300 average is "only" 4 percentage points higher than a .260 batting average...

Jeepers folks, this is starting to get ugly...  PS - Welcome Herndon Sucks!

Part of the problem is that the FAQ is horribly outdated in some areas.  My goal today is to add at least 3-4 new questions about fielding in the FAQ, because this stuff needs to be put on the main site.  All I have right now is 3 entries for throwing and even those are a bit vague.   So you bitches check up on me, make sure I have added to the fielding part of the FAQ today....
