Chat problem

using desktop now instead of my old lady's laptop but when I click on chat, the border for the page shows up but in the middle of my screen its blank with a little button to click that says "float" and when clicked the button does nothing.

I would use mIRC or some other client to connect to chatroom.  No java conflicts there.

rdub, what browser are you using? A lot of time, alternate browsers such as Firefox and Opera have trouble with plugins such as Java even after you have downloaded and installed the latest versions. As Gerlost said, I would recommend using mIRC or some other IRC client. To get the chat running in mIRC after installing it, enter this into your internet browser:

irc://irc.everywherechat.com/dee-nee

In mIRC you should then be connected to the everywherechat server and join the Dee-Nee channel. Make sure that you set up your nickname and everything in mIRC first, which shouldn't be too hard since the configuration options window comes up automatically the first time you run mIRC.

That would be a problem with your JVM, not the browser. Check about:plugins to ensure it's registered correctly. If it is, it's not the browser. If it's not, you've not installed it correctly.

Well, I wasn't insinuating that you're an idiot. Check about:plugins for a Java handler, and if you don't see one, it's usually easiest to just uninstall and reinstall Java. Also, if you're not using IE, get Sun's JVM instead of Microsoft's piece of shit.
