Frank Cashen - the forgotten hero of the 1986 Mets

Just made a quick Wiki page for Frank Cashen, the general manager of the 1986 Mets.  This guy did a remarkable job turning this franchise around.  They were pretty much the worst team in baseball and six years later they were the best.  The guy knew how to make trades:

good job.  this made me think if whitey herzog was the gm as well as manager of the 87 cards??? i know he later gm'd for the angels... any cards fans know?

I do know that Herzog is the one who called Cashen about trading for Keith Hernandez in 1983, so if he wasn't the GM then, he at least had a lot of power within the organization...

I'm wrong here. Lee Thomas was on the team, but not the actual GM

Hmmm, the Hernandez trade was June of 1983 and The Bad Guys Won said Herzog called Cashen about it.  Perhaps he sent out the feelers and the GM sealed the deal...

I'm sure even though Herzog didn't have the title of GM, he had plenty of say on personnel decisions.
