That out of 15 cards?  Impressive...

Was the Brett a Diamond King?

for that year, if i recall correctly, donruss just imposed the letters "MVP" behind the player photo instead of having a background.  these are different from the diamond kings (which i hated as a kid because they didn't have stats)

Here's the 89 MVP cards

This was the Diamond King card (looks like an 85).

They were in print from 82 - 88, and Donruss started inserting them in packs again sometime in the 90's.  If I recall correctly, rather than being a common subset now, they are serial numbered inserts and a reduced number are made
.
What I said here was untrue.  Sorry

They didn't take a break from making DKs until at least '92 - I have several '89-'91 DKs, and I have a '92 Cal Ripken (I just checked my baseball card spreadsheet, and that is the first one that's numbered separate from the rest of the set).

The '90 MVP cards were the best, I think, with "MVP" tiled in the background of the player's picture.  That year also had the funky red border with the cursive player names.  I have Sosa's rookie card from that set.

where are you guys getting these 88 and 89 Donruss?  They are so rare.

i remember a kid used to have a garbage bag full of 89 donruss that he would bring to school occasionally.  he also had a lot of fruit stripe gum.

i once got a Rob Dibble rookie card off him, the kid was a dumbass and thought that pitchers with a low ERA sucked.  Obviously the card is worthless, but as I mentioned before, all I cared about was getting players with good stats.  Dibble had like a 1.80 ERA his rookie year.  I thought I was a genius.

I stand corrected.  I don't know why I thought that Diamond Kings were out of print in the early 90's.
