When I couldn't fall asleep last night, I started thinking about the odds of having an RBI year (a 2 year period in which 8 different teams play in the ALCS and NLCS).  I looked it up and you can see below, I didn't happen again after 1988 until 2002, then happened again in 2003 (I listed all year since division realignment in 1969, on the left, I noted "RBI" if criteria was met):
Note that it has only happened 11 times: 9 from 1979-88

Another issue would be player movement I noted 1982 as an RBI yr but I know Reggie played for NYY in 81 and Cali in 1982, so he would have to be on 2 teams for it to work, I didn't look in depth at where else that might happen.

I remember originally figuring this out and writing this post, I thought it was cool, then I got no replys, and I was sad.

Thanks Teddy.

It is neat to note the pariry of the 80's so few repeat division winners.

Dave Henderson played for Boston in '86 and Boston/San Fran in '87

but he wasn't a major player for either team in their RBI year (in regular season)

just looked at Baylor and he played for Boston in '86 and Boston/Minnesota in '87

same story as Hendu - late season trade in '87

Wilfong with Angels in '86 and Giants in '87 - again, not a major player in '87 (8 AB's)

DeCinces with Angels in '86 and Angels/Cards in '87 - only 9 STL AB's

Interesting investigative work, ultimate.  You finally got your due props, and you raised an RBI-related issue that I had never thought of before.  The timing of the RBI gods was perfect to create this game.

RedBarron

83 - 84 would work as well.

2005   Hou   STL   Chicago Cali (or whatever you want to call them)
2004   Hou   STL   NYY   Boston
2003   Florida    Chicago   NYY   Boston

Another season, another non-RBI year

Though one could do:

03 Florida, 03 Cubs, 04 Houston, 04 Cardinals, 04 Yankees, 04 Red Sox, 05 White Sox, 05 Angels, NL All-Star (top 03-05 players), AL All-Star (same)

I don't think I've ever seen this thread before, but let me be the first to say "well done ultimate!"

Being a Chicago native, the 83-84 RBI ROM/cart would be killer...

RedBarron

i would buy the 83 - 84 ROM cart

2006  Stl NYM  Det Oak
2007  Col Ari   Cle Bos
2008  LAD Phi  TB Bos

So adding the last 3 seasons to the list would have added 1 more potential RBI season (2006-2007)

20 years from now, i'm going to call something "an rbi year" and then will have to spend 20 minutes explaining myself.
