AFC Wild Card XVII

In a highly anticipated track meet, the undefeated 07 Patriots were the only ones to show up and continue their march to perfection.

The high powered record breaking offense led by Tom Brady scored on every possession as they routed the 91 Oilers. Warren Moon and his run n' shoot offense had their problems outdoors at a windy and rainy Gillette Stadium.

Tom Brady connected with Randy Moss for 4 touchdowns to lead the surge while Belichick's defense forced 2 fumbles and an interception and forcing the run n' shoot to punt on key drives in the first half.

Coach Belichick quickly commented on his team's dominating performance, "we executed better than they did. Everybody did their job".

The 90 Giants played inspired defense and used ball control offense as they pulled away in the second half to beat the host 96 Packers 29-14.

Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall combined for 10 sacks on the day as the entire Giants defense terrorized the 1996 MVP Brett Favre and limited him to a meager 113 yards passing. In the fourth quarter, Lawrence Taylor sacked Favre and forced a fumble which was picked up by Everson Walls for a touchdown to put the game away for good.

Otis Anderson and Dave Megget combined for 136 yards and moved the chains all day with a mix of brute power and lightning quickness.

The 81 Chargers dominated the 72 Dolphins in all facets of the game on a beautiful day at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Air Coryell was running on all cylinders with a collection of big plays and methodical drives. Dan Fouts had a brilliant day as he had his way all day with the No-Name defense. The HOF QB completed 83 percent of his passes and threw for 3 touchdowns. His first came on a 80 yard strike to Wes Chandler on the 81 Chargers opening drive. The quick strike set the tone for the high powered offense of Air Coryell and seemingly struck fear into the No-Name defense as the momentum was clearly with the Chargers all day.

The surprising story of the day was the Charger's defense. The 81 Chargers defense, who were ranked 27th out of 28th in 1981, came up with best effort of the year as they limited Don Shula's efficient offense to only 133 total yards offense and no touchdowns.

Renewing an old rivalry from the Black and Blue/Frostbite Division division on a blistering cold day which provided plenty of snow at Soldier Field, the 1985 Bears played fierce Bear football as they overwhelmed the 1953 NFL champion Lions in the fourth quarter to win 14-0.

Buddy Ryan's 46 defense took center stage as they relentlessly dominated the Lions offense and knocked out HOF QB Bobby Layne out of the game in the fourth quarter. The 85 Bears registered 13 sacks, three fumbles, and only gave up 56 total yards (TSB record) and one first down. The 53 Lions never entered Bears territory and were limited to 3 and outs on all of their possessions but one. Bobby Layne had pressure in his face all day in the pocket and really had no chance in completing a string of passes to mount any kind of threat.

On offense, HOF RB Walter Payton rushed for 110 yards through the teeth of the celebrated Lions defense as he provided all the offense the 85 Bears would need. J.McMahon had a rough day as he was harassed by the Lions pass rush and had problems throwing into the swirling wind. He did manage to connect with Willie Gault for a 24 yard touchdown pass as he beat a ferocious Lions all-out blitz in the middle of the fourth quarter.
Walter Payton added a 22 yard touchdown run towards the end of the game to deliver the final blow. The Bears were shutout for the first three quarters due to a tough and well prepared Lions defense as well as the brutal weather in Chicago.

After the game, Buddy Ryan was seeing yelling at Mike Ditka on the sidelines. According to various sources, Buddy Ryan was not pleased with the offensive effort of the 85 Bears and questioned Mike Ditka's lack of creative playcalling on offense. Mike Ditka told the media that "we play smash mouth football and hit the snaught out of people, and that's our plan--simple Bear football".

AFC Divisional XVII

Tom Brady's record setting day against the Steel Curtain shattered many long held beliefs of how a superior defense wins championships.

The 2007 NFL MVP passed for a TSB record 441 yards and 6 touchdown passes as he shredded the defending TSB XVI champion 1978 Steelers in leading the 07 Patriots to a 49-14 rout at Gillette Stadium.

Donte Stallworth exploited single coverage all day with much attention regulated to Randy Moss. Stallworth caught 6 passes for 272 and added 3 touchdown scores. His reception yards fell 30 yards short of the TSB record held by Jerry Rice. Randy Moss also registered over a 100 yards receiving despite the double team coverage all day.

The undefeated 07 Patriots, the highest scoring team ever in NFL history, jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead which rendered arguably one of the best defenses ever in NFL history to complete shock going into the locker room. The celebrated Steel Curtain did not register one sack and gave up the most yards in their storied history---522 yards which is a TSB record.

Mel Blount was seen after the game shaking his head in disbelief to a toothless Jack Lambert as they stood at midfield in disbelief. To many TSB observers, the general consensus was that the Steel Curtain were supposed to dominate and intimidate. That's what they do, but not on this day in which the 78 Steelers could not figure out Brady's shotgun spread offense that Josh McDaniels orchestrated with brilliance.

During the post game conference, a reporter asked Bill Belichick if the 07 Partriots "had the look", Belichick responded, "everybody did their jobs".  Another reporter asked Belichick for a detailed analysis of why the Steel Curtain never sacked Brady, " he got rid of the ball" said Belichick.

NFC Divisional XVII

The team of the 80's and their efficient West Coast Offense used a balanced attack as they comfortably defeated the 90 Giants 28-10 at the Meadowlands.

With Phil Simms and Dave Megget out due to injury, Bill Parcells and his power control offense stumbled against a highly motivated and underrated 89 Niner defense. Ronnie Lott intercepted the Hos twice and Charles Haley made life very uncomfortable for the Giants passing attack as he registered 4 sacks and 8 hurries.

Jerry Rice and Roger Craig performed brilliantly as they scored 2 touchdowns apiece.

The victory was highly rewarding for the 89 Niners as they avenged a heartbreaking loss to the 90 Giants in the NFC Title game. The loss ended the Niners attempt at a 3-peat.

AFC Divisional XVII

Dan Fouts hit a streaking Kellen Winslow to give the 81 Chargers a 45-35 lead with 2 minutes remaining. It proved to be enough to hold off the 98 Broncos in a wild shootout at Jack Murphy Stadium.

The wild shootout featured 4 lead exchanges in the highest scoring game ever in the history of the TSB playoffs, and the 35 4th quarter points set another record.

Terrell Davis set a new TSB record by rushing for 291 yards, but it was not enough in a game that featured no punts. Chuck Muncie and James Brooks combined for 146 yards on 12 carries while Dan Fouts passed brilliantly.

The difference in the game was a Shannon Sharpe fumble in Chargers terrirritory in the 3rd quarter as well as a missed field goal by Jason Elam in the same quarter.

The high powered offense of Air Coryell will compete with the record breaking offense of the 07 Patriots for the AFC Championship game which should be a display of offensive fireworks.

NFC Divisional XVII

Walter Payton scored on 6 yard touchdown run in the second quarter and the 85 Bears defense did the rest from there as the 85 Bears shut down the 77 Cowboys for a narrow 7-3 victory.

On fourth and 10 with 1:03 remaining in the game and with the ball at the Bears 24 yard line, Roger Staubach dropped back to pass and was met by Richard Dent at the line of scrimmage as he tried to scramble for a first down. America's Team turned the ball over on downs and Jim McMahon took a knee to end the game.

The Doomsday defense kept the Cowboys in the game by suffocating the Bears offense all day but on one drive that was set up by a Walter Payton 54 yard scamper into the redzone. Jim McMahon threw two interceptions that killed two promising drives by the Bears. Otherwise the margin of victory would have been much bigger.

Buddy Ryan's defense played lights out once again as they did not give up a touchdown for the second consecutive game. Tony Dorsett had 13 carries for 0 yards and R.Staubach was limited to 85 yards passing and sacked 9 times. The celebrated 46 defense held the offensive juggernaut 77 Cowboys to 86 total yards offense.
However, Staubach marched the 77 Cowboys deep into Bear territory in the final minutes of the game and it appeared that another Cowboy comeback was imminent, but the 46 defense tightened up and saved the day as they held the Cowboys to zero yards from their 24 yard line with just over a minute to play.

TSB juggernaut 85 Bears now move on to battle the 89 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

AFC Championship XVII

The highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL was not denied on a sunny day at Jack Murphy Stadium.

The 2007 Patriots won convincingly 38-24 over the 1981 Chargers and will make their second TSB appearance as they will seek their second Lombardi trophy.

Wes Welker scored on a 25 yard touchdown reverse to put up the undefeated 07 Patriots 35-21 early in the fourth quarter and essentially ended the hopes for Don Coryell. The Chargers next drive ended up in a field goal and the ensuing Patriots drive chewed up the clock behind quick screens and some power running by Lawrence Money which ended up with a field goal and only seconds left.

The game was closer in the first half as both teams were running up and down the field. Dan Fouts drove the explosive 81 Chargers inside the Patriots redzone  just before halftime, but threw an ill advised pass to Charlie Joyner in the back of the endzone as Asante Samuel made a leaping grab to intercept the pass and give the Patriots all the momentum going into the locker room.

Donte Stallworth caught 4 passes for 148 yards as Josh McDaniels centered Tom Brady's passing attack around Stallworth who drew single coverage all day with all the attention on Randy Moss.

Bill Belichick offered his analysis of the victory to reporters "we made more plays than they did".

At a frigid Soldier Field, the 89 49ers jumped out to a 16-0 lead and dominated the rest of the way as they stunned the 5-time TSB champion 85 Bears 30-7.

Roger Craig's touch down put the Niners up 7-0 on their opening drive and on the ensuing drive, Michael Carter sacked Jim McMahon in the endzone for a safety. The 49ers then scored an a 62 yard strike (Montana to Rice) on the first play on the next  possession and before the fans could even get settled in their seats, the team of the 80's were ahead 16-0.

Jerry Rice stole the spotlight by burning the 46 defense with 4 catches for 109 yards. The 49ers defense dominated the Bears offense and only yielded 7 points as they contained Walter Payton and sacked Jim McMahon 7 times.

Offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren's brilliant game plan called for multiple 3-step drop backs and an array of slants to counter Buddy Ryan's aggressive blitz schemes as well as keeping Montana's jersey clean.

The 89 49es will make their 4th trip to the TSB. They are 0-3 in all three of their TSB appearances and face a big challenge in matching up with the 07 Patriots in TSB XVII.

Super Tecmo Bowl XVII

In one of the most memorable Tecmo Super Bowls ever, the 07 Patriots won a thriller in overtime to capture their second TSB Championship.

Wes Welker's 43 yard catch deep into 49ers territory in overtime set up S.Gostkowki's game winning field goal.

With the 49ers up 21-14 in the third quarter, Josh McDaniel's reached deep down into his playbook and called for a series of reverses to Wes Welker, one of which resulted in a 58 yard touch down run.  The Patriots added a field goal with under 4 minutes remaining, but Montana quickly positioned the team of the 80's for the game winning touchdown with just under two minutes to play. With first and goal from the Patriots 7 yard line, the 89 49ers failed to score a touch down as the Patriots played tough defense by stuffing Roger Craig and Tom Rathman on consecutive runs. Then on third and goal, Montana was sacked by Ted Bruschi and the Niners settled for a game tying field goal to send the game into overtime.

The Patriots won the toss and recovered an onside kick. One play later, the Patriots were in field goal range thanks to a Brady to Welker strike.

Wes Welker was named TSB XVII MVP.

The 49ers are now 0-4 in their 4 TSB appearances. The 07 Patriots completed a perfect season and Belichick was once again brief in his analysis, " everybody did their jobs".

In one of the NFL's greatest all-time rivalries, the highly anticipated Brady-Manning duel turned out to be a blowout.

Petyon Manning's kryptonite, Bill Belichick's cleverly disguised defense, confused and frustrated Manning all day. The Patriots relentless pass rush sacked Manning 9 times, and pressured him into throwing ill advised passes which resulted in 3 interceptions.

It was business as usual for the highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. Randy Moss caught a pair of deep strikes for touchdowns, and Tom Brady threw for 336 yards while completing 82 percent of his passes. When Tony Dungy decided to double Randy Moss, Tom Brady exploited the Colts defense by hitting Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, and Ben Watson all day. The only thing that stopped the offensive juggernaut Patriot offense was the gusty New England wind.

Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick did not shake hands after the game.

John Carney missed a crucial extra point in the first quarter. The rare EP miss came back to haunt him.

The brash 92 Cowboys led by an arrogant Jimmy Johnson overcame a 1st quarter 13-0 deficit and held on to win 35-34 over the 09 Saints.

The game's biggest play came as time expired in the first half. Playmaker Alvin Harper scored on a 67 yard pass from Troy Aikman, and gave the 92 Cowboys a 21-20 lead going into the locker room and all the momentum they needed.
In the second half, the 92 Cowboys scored 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 35-20 lead. Drew Brees and the 09 Saints dynamic offense woke up and scored a pair of touch downs in the 4th quarter to tighten up the contest 35 to 34, but the Cowboys ran out the clock on their final drive.

The Saints were not able to go for a 2-point conversion since the Tecmo rules only administer 1-point conversions after touchdowns. Sean Payton threw his visor at the Tecmo Rules Committee after the game in a press conference.

The 92 Cowboys will travel to Soldier Field to take on the 85 Bears for their divisional playoff. Asked about his chances against Buddy Ryan's 46 defense, Jimmy Johnson yelled "HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!".
