JoeDirt and I attempted to get a network game together. Despite the best efforts of two people of reasonable intelligence, we couldn't get the damned thing to work. We tried using both Nesticle 0.42 and FCE Ultra 0.98.10, and it was a complete disaster both times. I felt we came the closest with Nesticle...acting as the server, I could establish a connection, but I couldn't get JoeDirt to connect to me and my TCP/IP address.

If anyone has experience using Nesticle, please feel free to get in touch with me, either through the board, or Yahoo Messenger ID fightonusc. I don't want to have to work; if I can figure out how to use this damned Network capability, it would be pretty damned Dee Nee!

Are either of you behind a broadband router?  If so, you have to do what's called "port forwarding" on your router...

Second, make sure you are using the EXACT same ROM when playing...

I am on my company's LAN line connection. However, there is no Internet Firewall Protection on my computer (I was acting as the server in this case). Would the non-server person also have to not be behind a firewall, or just the person acting as the server?

The person acting as the server only has to have the open ports.  Just because you don't have firewall software running on your computer doens't mean you aren't behind one.  Most every business has a hardware firewall.  Try this:

If you are using windows2000 or XP --> Click start, go to run and type in "cmd" -  type in ipconfig and write down your IP address.  Should be for your "Local Area Connection" or something simliar

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com and compare IP addresses.  If they are different you are behind a firewall/nat device of some sort...

Crap. OK, since I apparently am behind a firewall, how can I open up a port?

So your IPs were different?  You are SOL unless you own the place or are buddies with the tech guy.  Whoever configured your firewall would hvae to open/forward those ports...

I'd try going the other way, JoeDirt - what kind of connection are you using?

JoeDirt

I was behind a firewall, too.  :(

D'oh!
