Gantry, why don't you give mcgwire more respect? I've always seen him as the best home run hitter in RBI. I know his son is fat and goofy--but it's not entirely his fault.
You're going down, chainsaw.

I know this question is directed to Gantry, but I felt like responding with my opinion anyway.  Nobody should respect any athlete who uses steroids that have been banned by nearly every professional sports organization out there (including the Olympics).  McGwire lost ALOT of respect from ALOT of people that I know when news of him taking those steroids got out.

Well if u cant respect mcgwire for using steriods (which he used for his back), then u cant respect ken caminiti, brady anderson, and a whole lot more baseball players including barry bonds.  They all do steriods because they all had one good year except for bonds who's still on steriods.

I really wasn't talking about the "real" mark mcgwire, just the RBI version.
But while we're on the subject, it doesn't bother me if he used steroids. The league obviously doesn't either. If they did, they would test for it immediately. Besides, everyone likes homeruns.

I agree that McGwire is the best masher in RBI.  Even his pop-ups sail over the fence.

"Which he used for his back".... you have to be kidding me.  Do you really believe he took steroids for his back and not for enabling him to crank homers?  Come on, let's be realistic here.  And it's true, I don't respect alot of players out there for their use of steroids.  I respect the great old-timers more than I do the newbies.

vgp100:
It doesn't bother you if he (along with several others) used steroids?  It's cheating man.  Steroids (esp. those banned everywhere) destroy respected records, create unlevel playing fields, and destroy the integrity of the player and the sport if used excessively.

Yes, McGwire is one of the best, if not the best, at smashing them out of the park in RBI.

The post by gpines was by me, i forgot to login.  Whether he used the steriods for his back or not, it definetly made him much bigger.  I just dont see why they need to take steriods.  Roger Maris and Babe Ruth didnt take steriods.  Even Andre Dawson was a skinny guy and he has lots of power.

Look at Alfonso Soriano, no need there either, like previously posted, I completely agree with SmokedUBad, steroids are cheating.

I'd rather watch some guy who worked his ass of to get into the Majors rather than some guy who juiced his way in.

There's a classic poem by George Phair, The Old Fashioned Batter, that pertains to this subject, you can read it on the Dodgers web-site.

And my late reply to the first response is that we hardly ever play All-Stars and they aren't factored into the rankings, which is why McGwire/Canseco/Bell/Dawson get little mention on the site...

Don't forget Murphy.  I would include him in that group.

Hey just because Soriano is small and plays second base doesn't mean that he's not on the juice. I would bet money that he did get on the juice this year, he at least doubled his homerun total out of nowhere.

Believe me, most the players are on roids.

First and Foremost...Bonds dosen't juice.  Since his rookie year he has only gained 35 pounds.  Going from age 21 to 38 and gaining 35 pounds is pretty natural.  Plus its no secret that he is a health and workout freak and that he has been on this program since he became a giant.
Sosa on the other-hand...clearly juices!  Just look at that freakish back.
Finally, I'll leave with this.  Although this may destroy my creditabilty, Ellis Burks is the best R.B.I. player!

Do you have some inside knowledge about Barry and Sammy sucka?  How can you say that they juice or not?  You got some insight into their personal life?

I do the offical statistics for the Giants and A's (basically I keep score)  I get to be around the press a lot and here things.  The latest rumor is that Dusty will be done at the end of the season and he is headed to coach the Cubs.  However a world series appearance changes this.

Big Hath

I wouldn't exactly word it that he would be "done" at the end of the season.  It's just that there are several teams that would love to have him as manager and his market value continues to rise with his contract running out.  I'm sure the Giants will want him back.

The Giants really want and need him back, but he is just sick of the upper managment making comments to the press and never giving him a roster of players that can really contend.  Chicago would be a good place to manage.  They can match any doolar amount the giants make, there's no pressure to win (93 years without a title), its always a sellout crowd, young pitching staff, a couple of young players, and Sammy.  Only time will tell, but I really beleive that both Dusty and Kent are gone at seasons end
