what has caused this sudden surge of spam signups?  does this happen to every forum at the same time, or do they just find a group of forums and target them for a while?

My guess is that a lot of people thought now would be a good time to sign up, and Gantry is just blocking them all because he is a tyrant.

Yeah, someone broke the captcha.

We're a couple minor revisions behind on the forum software, but they recently released 2.0 which we've been waiting for for like two years. I tried installing a copy to start checking it out and migrating, but it's been so long since I've updated forum software I forgot some needed information to access ward (the forum server). I fail as a computer nerd.

The problem is that I don't know what 2.0 looks like. We'll likely check it out with a test install. The forum theme we use by default has kind of been the black sheep of SMF for a while now. If it's gone in 2.0 or heavily changed, we'll probably just stay on 1.x and find a solution to the spam account problem.

I'd prefer to go balls deep into 2.0 and see what happens.  The worst that could happen is that nightwulf has to recompile the internets.
