Just curious if anyone else getting one of these? It's supposed to be released sometime this month. It would be nice to play my cartridges on my HDTV since it "upconverts" them to be much more clear. The only thing I am wary of is the bluetooth analog D pad. I'll probably just use my NES and SNES orignal controls until I get used to the bluetooth controller.

That looks spectacular, but WHY WHY WHY would you have an analog stick on the controller when it is built for systems that only used d-pads?  That seems like a completely terrible decision.

The upconverting is probably not a huge deal.  I know there are emulators that have built-in smoothing mechanisms (pretty sure FCEUltra does that), which basically just make things less blocky, with the downside being that things end up looking kind of smudged at the edges, and of course it's a "less authentic" experience.

Right now I play on a retron 3. I think I'm going to trade it in to our local Rock 30 Games and upgrade to this. It blows my mind that they can create save states straight from the cart.

Vegan meatloaf? How does that work?  I am going to order a salad with meat lettuce next time I go out to eat

That looks pretty sweet, though at the end of the day that thing is using emulation for the CPU itself so there could be glitches.

True, but it has ports for the real console controllers

Gantry

Didn't see any word on price.

RBI Empire

I read that it will be $100. Not too bad for 10 system compatibility.

VEGAS

Yep $99. Several places online where they are accepting pre-orders at that price. I placed mine on amazon. I'm bummed that the retrousb power pak won't work on it. Ditto for most of the 72 in 1 carts.

I wonder if Turd's RBI baseball rom cartridges will work with the RetroN 5? If so I'd definitely get one.

VEGAS

I bet it will. I played turds cart on my retron 3 last year w no problems.

Gantry

I didn't look, does it support ROMs on a memory card?

VEGAS

Doubt it, the previous versions won't allow for powerpak or other carts with SD cards full of roms. I asked hyperkin directly but they were mum on it. I'm still getting the retron 5 when they are released and I'll report on the viability of playing roms as soon as I can.

Hyperkin just emailed me & confirmed the retron 5 will not support powerpak. Thus playing hacked or original Roms likely means they need to be on a cart. Not sure about those 40-in1 or 76-in1 carts though.

This review sheds a little more light on the Retron 5. I'm going to try it out first at E3 in a couple of weeks before I buy it. The $40 price hike is what's keeping me on the fence. I should have pre-ordered a while ago.

Gantry

Seems like a quality device, don't think I would use that controller though.

I pre-ordered on Amazon at $99 back in January. I hope they honor that.

So i have the retron 5. I will confirm that none of my everdrive devices work on it.

If you guys have any specific questions i will do my best to answer them.

Cost me 180 though. The pricetag is 150 but they are scarce so you know the name of the game.

What the fuck are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

Turd

Yeah, that controller would scare me off, and the fact that I'd need cartridges for all the games...my powerpak and my HTPC will serve quite well for any retrogaming I need...

Turd

P.S. The carts you get from me should work, since they aren't emulated, they are real carts..

VEGAS

TRUTH!
I played last year's cart (by Turd) on my old Retron 3 without any issue.
