So I've been trying to come up with something new to do. After a little initial research, I think I can implement a "designated hitter" hack.

Since this would be a big project, I'd like to gauge interest before I get my hands dirty with this. Would anyone be interested? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would like that for this reason: for myself, a lot of the ROMs that I create are "Best Of" ROMs, and having the ability to add another hitter to the game and the starting line-up through a DH would make my ROMs a little more interesting and save some debate over the last bench spot.

I'm a fan of the new hacks

THe DH is complete ass in real life.

In the RBI world, the more bombs the better. . . .bring on the dingleberried hitter. . . the DH.

Gantry

Agreed, that would be a great idea mostly for new ROMs.  Much more flexibility.  Good thinking my friend...

See that's something I've been debating. I'm not sure that adding a 13th batter to the roster isn't unbalancing. I was thinking more of using the 9th spot (first PH) as the DH, and removing him from the PH list.

I'm pretty sure adding a player is possible though. The big hangup I'm at right now is finding a place in ROM to store the data, and figuring out how to switch that section of ROM into RAM, pull any data I need, and switch the original page back in. This isn't something I'll have figured out overnight, but I enjoy a challenge. :)

So ... 13th batter or use a PHer? Thoughts?

So you would have to invent another player if you went with 13 players, right?

I would just use the Pinch Hitter to keep it as close to RBI as possible.

i kinda like the idea but having a pitcher in the order makes you think. Makes games more interesting

Wow, I'm really surprised this thread did not take off with many pages of discussion.  I'm sure there has to be more people who would love to see this as an option.

In the pre-custom ROM days, my RBI playing friends/family talked about all the things we wished we could do with RBI.  Having a designated hitter was near the top of that old list (along with having every single team on one cartridge- http://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?topic=14204.0).

Nightwulf is the person right at the heart of many RBI players dreams.  I personally (on behalf of a half dozen or so other RBI players) would love to have the option of a designated hitter.  If possible, a 13th batter option would be a perfect bonus to go with this potential project.  Like fightonusc, I'm creating (and/or planning) many "All-Time / Best Of" style ROMs and find that its hard to include all the players worthy of a spot on the roster.  Inevitably some great name from the past or present needs to be left off.

I would guess that the DH would be an option (like 2 player pause/same team selection) that isn't forced and needs to be manually chosen.  Therefore anyone who doesn't like the idea, would simply have to do nothing and just ignore it.  Hopefully this idea doesn't disappear...

For me, by far--the number one on my RBI wish list is more teams per cart.

The DH was very confusing in RBI 3. One DH would bat in a random order...and why is John Kruk a righty in that game?

I think the way RBI 3 worked is that you needed to have three OFs, four IFs, and one C somewhere in the batting order - where they were in the order didn't matter.  By default, the team's DH batted 9th, since he was the first sub on the list if they were playing by NL rules.

When I played with the NL all-stars, I played a catcher-free lineup (the roster's catchers sucked, so I declared that Andre Dawson was catching), and I never noticed any higher error frequency - I don't know how stringently the game enforced having the right number of each position.
