Here is a ROM I have been working on for a while that includes 5 Negro League and 5 Japanese teams. For perhaps the first time you will get to play with an actual black baseball player. Featured players include: Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Ichiro Suzuki, Sadaharu Oh, Hideki Matsui, Yutaka Fukumoto.

I believe the teams are fairly well made and balanced. They are definitely high powered as each team is like an all-time team but there is no clear cut best or worst team.

Please check it out and let me know what you think.

where did you post the rom?

Assuming you meant to attach this ...

Hmmm.... That's weird I knew I attached when I wrote the first message. Must have disappeared when I went to preview.

That is indeed the file, Nightwulf. I have included some other files (rosters, info) in this attachment. That is if it shows up this time.

I just played a game with the Newark Eagles.  This is an awesome ROM, and I'm a big fan of the Eagles.

I collected Monte Irvin cards about 5 years ago, and have become a huge fan of his.  I read his book, donated to his charity, and still have about a dozen of his cards from the 1950s.

I also had a chance to meet Leon Day when I was about 9 years old.  My dad recognized him at a baseball card show we were attending to get McGwire's and Todd Bennzinger's autograph (weird, huh?).  Leon Day was not signing autographs; he was selling baseball cards.  My dad couldn't get over this.

Great historical ROM.

This is great to see. This is an idea that I've been wanting to do for some time, and always got frustrated with. How did you go about setting the batting and pitching ratings? With a lack of accurate record keeping in the Negro Leagues, that was always my big headache with a Negro Leagues ROM.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

There was a Japanese Negro league? That's cool.

DrNick

Thanks for the compliments so far.

fightonusc: The lack of accurate statistics for the Negro Leagues was somewhat beneficial, in my opinion. Having stats are nice but I find that it's harder to create ratings based solely upon stats. As mentioned in the ReadMe file accompanying my version of the ROM, I developed the ratings based on various biographies of the players that I found on the web. This gave me a more qualitative feel for the players. I have also created a spreadsheet ranking the original RBI players in the three hitting categories, so after reading the bios I would scan the list for who I thought would be comparable players and then gave them a similar rating. As for pitchers, I'm not sure how well I did with the pitchers but again I read their bios and then developed their ratings based on what I felt they would be like.

My ratings are quite subjective so I hoped that if anyone feels that certain players should be tweaked either way or knows of some other good resources, they could let me know so I could make this as accurate as I can.

EDIT:  IGNORE, just realized he is a batter and a pitcher, sorry

I was just looking at the Player rating file and noticed that radciffe is starting and on the bench for Pittsburgh

The Raiders are a successful organization

DrNick

Not the bench, but as a hitter and pitcher.

That is Double Duty Radcliffe, who was given that nickname by Damon Runyon (a New York sportswriter) after catching Satchel Paige in the first game of a double-header and then pitching a shutout in the second game.

Also of note, he made 6 East-West games (Negro League version of the All-Star Game). Three appearances were as a catcher, three as a pitcher. Since, I had trouble filling Pittsburgh's roster and I only wanted Josh Gibson on one team, I decided to have him listed as both starting catcher and a pitcher.

You will also notice that Leon Day appears as a pinch hitter as well as a pitcher for the Newark Eagles. He usually played second base or in the outfield on his days off, so as I was again short players for Newark, I included him as a pinch hitter.

Those are the only examples of the same player appearing twice on the same team, but I also had to put some players on two teams because it is difficult to find more than 6-8 star players for some of these teams and I didn't want to have to search through each individual player biography to find more players for the bench, so I allowed so players to play on multiple teams. These players actually did play for both teams during their careers.

DrNick:

I completely missed this thread the first time around, great fucking job!  Would you mind if I added this to my ROMs Page?  Impressive attention to detail, I salute you sir...

I played a game with Chicago and noticed the leadoff hitter was named "LLYOD" - is this supposed to be for John Henry "Pop" Lloyd?  I assume so but just wanted to point out that his name was misspelt....

I know nothing about the Negro Leagues but noticed the misspelling and looked Pop Lloyd up on the Wikipedia.  Here's a blurb:

" His greatest campaign of all, however, and probably the greatest single-season performance in the history of baseball, was in 1928, when he batted .564 with 11 home runs and 10 stolen bases in only 37 games. This feat was made even more impressive by the fact that he was 44 years old at the time."

Edit - Looked at your rosters text file, it is Lloyd.

DrNick

Thank you very much. I would appreciate it if you could post it on your ROMS page.

As to "Pop" Lloyd, I did misspell his name. I actually misspelled it everywhere in the game, documentation, and my own reference notes. I have corrected this error and have attached the new updated files.

If you or anyone finds any other errors in the game, please let me know so I can correct them.

Gantry

Cool, I'll add you to the page tomorrow and let you know of any more errors.  Keep up the good work...

How did you find this thread?  Am I not the only person who randomly searches the forum for the word "negro"?

I have yet to play this rom.  I don't know whether that makes me racist against blacks, Asians, or possibly both.  Or maybe against just the Japanese negroes, as BDawk so not unfunnily quipped a year and a half ago.

im with attezz, and frequently check to see what everyone is doing online.  more specifically guests.  they are usually reading the most interesting topics.  i see "titty fucking" is a very popular thread to view by guests.  not a day goes by that they are not looking that one over.

Indeed, and I have no idea why.

Saw the title of this thread today and this is pretty much what I though again.
