Great news, other notes:

Willie McGee, also on the ballot for the first time, received 26 votes, exactly at the 5 percent cutoff to avoid being dropped in future years. Darryl Stawberry, another first-time eligible, got six votes.

Reliever Bruce Sutter, appearing on the ballot for the 12th time, received 344 votes (66.7 percent), up from 301 last year but 43 shy of what was needed this time. He was followed by Jim Rice (307), Rich "Goose" Gossage (285) and Andre Dawson (270).

Straw deserves it more than McGee.

I'm thinking Willie most have a lot more friends in the media, Darryl must not have shared his coke with others.

Care to back that one up?  Stats and quality of character don't seem to support Strawberry over McGee.

Of course, neither of them actually deserves to be in the hall, either way.

I always thought Willie Mcgee looked like a greyhound (dog, not bus).

McGee was never the best player at this position, or even on his team.  Straw was the most prolific and feared hitter in themid to late 80's.  Granted it was short-lived, but I like dominators as opposed to compilers.

Neither deserves to be in, but if one had to make it- it's Straw.

BeeJay

Well, while Willie McGee was "compiling" his .353 average and mvp award in 1985, Strawberry wasn't even playing enough to qualify for the average leader board.  Strawberry was the Ron Gant of his day, low average, high homers.  Guys like that are a dime a dozen.  And on top of that, he pissed away his career, what a great player.

BeeJay, I think you are blinded by your Cardinal fandom.  I like Willie McGee a lot more than Strawberry, but I can easily say that Strawberry had a better career than McGee.

McGee's MVP season was the only time he was Top 10 in MVP voting, Straw was top 10 4 times and despite having a lower career BA he had a better career OBP.

I'll admit that I'm biased on this one, you only have to look under my avatar to know that, and that I hate the mets.  I'll also admit that Willie clearly doesn't belong in the hall of fame.  However, McGee's career average is over 30 points higher than Strawberry's, while the difference in OB is about 20.  While this is just my opinion, I've always put more stock in average than on base percentage.  I'll admit that Straw had a great 6 year run or so, but that's about it.  McGee had a very good career, finishing up as one of the best bench players in the game. I also don't remember Willie serving prison time and being suspended on more than one occasion.  That's something that matters for the hall of fame.

I think OBP is bad overrated for sluggers.  A slugger who walks or singles isn't nearly as threating a player.

Thus is my argument for Andre Dawson.  The guy didn't get paid to get on base.  Who gives a flying fuck what his OBP was?  His job was to mash and drive in runs.

Darrly Strawberry is the douchiest douche bag that ever douched a sloppy funky douche needing pussy.  He had more talent in his toenails than 90 percent of the players had in their entire bodies.

I always liked Willie McGhee.  Sure, he was uglier than my asshole after an 8 hour binge of taco bell, but the guy could flat out play.

You know a player that I don't "get?"   Mark McGwire.  Now don't get me wrong, he's a hall of famer, but I've never bought into him being all that great of an over all ball player.  He had a couple of sub .200 seasons, never was a great fielder, and harldy did anything other than homers or outs.   I'm afraid he'll take away too much spotlight from Ripken and Gwynn when their time comes for induction.

Boggs and McGee (err, make that Sandberg) have finally been adeded to the WATN.

What do you guys think about Dawson being in the HOF?   That's a better discussion than McGee or Straw.   How about Jim Rice, who had a decent showing during this voting session...

I think you meant Boggs and "Sanberg," he, he.   And I'd say yes on Dawson.  He had some major power for quite a while, especially when compared to other outfielders of his era.  Granted, some of his best seasons came in Wrigley, but he proved himself in Olympic Stadium, thumbs up for the Hawk.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Rice.  From the stats I've seen, I think he should also be in.  However, I don't remember seeing him play, so I'm not positive.

Gantry

Yes I meant Sandberg, edited that...

I'm on the fence with Dawson, but don't see it as much for Rice.  Rice had a higher peak but Dawson was better for longer IMHO.  If there was a porno baseball HOF, Rice would be the a first-ballot entry...

BeeJay

Sorry, I like to make fun of people that are more successful than I, and I agree with you.  Rice seems to have better numbers than the Hawk, but like I said, I don't remember seeing him play.  I find it hard to judge players from an era i never saw.
