I'm putting together a ROM for baseball's best rivalries.  So far, I think I'm going to use these teams:

Yankees/Red Sox
Cardinals/Cubs
Mets/Braves
Giants/Dodgers

Suggestions for the last two teams?

You definitely hit all the big rivalries.  Maybe Whitesox/Tigers, Oakland/Seattle....???

Yeah, I couldn't really think of any other big rivalries.   I've tossed around the idea of adding the Brooklyn Dodgers to the mix, but I kind of like the idea of all-time rosters, and Brooklyn would be all guys from the past.

I kind of like the idea of the White Sox and Oakland, just for the cross-town rivalry of Cubs/White Sox and A's/Giants.

I think cubs/Sox is a good call.  However, I wouldn't break up the Dodgers/Giants.... this is one of the all time greats.
I remember the year when the Giants won 100 games and got knocked out of the playoffs on the last game of the season, when the shitty dodgers smashed them (like 11-2 or something).

No doubt about it.  I meant simply adding White Sox and Oakland as the last two teams, so that there would be Dodgers vs. Giants, and also the possiblity of Giants vs A's.  Likewise, you'd have Cubs vs. Cards, and Cubs vs. ChiSox.

For Oakland, you could almost fill a roster just from their late 80s' teams.

For the Sox you could go Frank Thomas all the way back to Joe Jackson.

DId the Philadelphia Athletics become the Oakland Athletics or did they become the Phillies?

Nails

The Philadelphia A's became the Kansas City A's, then became the Oakland A's.

The Phillies started out as the Quakers or something.

Then Oakland should have a nice selection of players to work with...

Nails

Actually, the Phillies went from the Quakers, to Blue Jays, to Phillies.

Yeah, I don't expect any problems with choosing players from A's or White Sox.  Like Stock said, the 80's alone would provide a good team for Oakland.

Thanks for the input guys.   I'll probably start coming up with rosters tonight.

Question for Cardinals fans:  who would you rate as the best all around 2nd baseman and catcher from the past 25 years?  Preferably, this player would have played for the team a minimum of 3 years, and the reason for choosing this player must be based on stats as a Cardinal.

I was going to say Rogers Hornsby, then I learned to read.  The Cards have a long history of light hitting guys at second, so I'd have to go with Hjose Oqundo.  He's the only one that lasted, he was a decent player, and he's the only one I really associate with the Cardinals.  Vina just didn't last long enough, and everyone else was pretty mediocre.

Catcher's are all about defense as well.  Pagnozzi couldn't hit at all, but was there for his whole career.  Matheny had a better bat and is a great catcher.  Marrerro got cancer and was a utility man, so he's out.  I really don't know who I'd choose; I hated Pagnozzi, but Matheny was only there for 5 years.

Thanks for the input.  I think i'm either going with Oquendo or Tom Herr, since he got pretty steady playing time in the early-mid 80's (he had a good year in '85 too).  And I originally had planned on Pagnozzi, but think I might switch it to Matheny.  Thanks.

Oops, I forgot to mention Herr.  For some reason I've got it in my head that he played 3rd, I guess it's some messed up connection I made when I was a kid that barely understood baseball.

ask tim mccarver about the best catcher!

my card catcher would be darrell porter

2b would be herr

BeeJay

It's appropriate that a Cubs fan would pick a guy like Porter.  The guy only showed up in the postseason when he was with St. Louis, and his "best" years were in the AL.
