New Rom Challenge Marquis or ?

If anybody is up to the task of creating an "all-time rosters" rom, I have a link that would help out greatly.

I can't say that they are right on the money, but Its a start. It has the "All-time rosters" of every team. So I would suggest using my 3 roms, which have all the teams allready set, and plug the lineups in, or I could even do that, and i believe they have stats, you will probably have to use your stats to get rankings system, and they should all be there.

I'm going to try an alltime set, but I'm using the stats from here: http://www.geocities.com/patthebone/DiamondMind/MLB_Team_Rosters.htm

It has a larger base to choose from.  Although for myself, this will take some time because I'm anal, and I want no player duplications.  Which makes deciding where guys like Foxx, McGwire, Frank Robinson, Staub, etc quite a pain.  Eh, maybe I'll just make a 10 team AL and 10 team NL rom.  Otherwise Crimedog is first base on 4 or 5 teams.  Stupid expansion teams, they complicate everything.

Hey, Clyon.  I think it would probably be best not to use your ROMs - not because they're not good (far from it; they're about the best thing since sliced bread), but because the game would be unbalanced.  The Yankees and D-Backs are both in ROM 1, for example, and 100 years of history vs. 5 isn't quite fair.  Also, the Tigers are in ROM 3, and while they stink now, Ty Cob and Hank Greenberg will have a field day with Wade Boggs and the Devil Rays.

I made an all-time ROM about a year ago with the original RBI teams (I didn't have any method to edit the team names), and it was basically unplayable without dividing the teams into pre- and post-expansion era.  I'll have to see if I can find that and get it up on Gantry's ROMs page - it's pretty decent if you stick to my guidelines.

I'd be interested in helping out. My best asset would probably be making sure the ratings are within the original levels. I'd imagine you'd want to be close to the arcade ratings, rather than the original rom, since the arcade rom has the all time greats as well. Since it's your rom(s), I'll leave that decision up to you.

I can also help with my knowledge of baseball. So if you're trying to figure out which year to use for which player, or who should be in the starting lineup, I can help there too.

Just some notes:

Those articles with the all time teams won't give you many of the best players of all times. It's just a sampler from Neyer's new book. For example the Braves doesn't have guys from when they played in Boston or Milwaukee (no Eddie Mathews IIRC!!!). So I agree with using the diamond mind site for the teams.

I agree with both points in replies. I like the idea of one player on each team, without repeats, and I like the idea of having the oldest teams on one rom, down to the youngest teams on another.

I also would want to add that you should have the best player at each position on each team. For example, each team should have a catcher, SS, 3B, etc., even though you may just sub them out later anyway.

Any thoughts as to which teams make the first group of 10?  There are 16 original teams ("original" meaning they were around in '03, when the first World Series took place), which leaves 6 teams to migrate to the second ROM with the early expansion teams (Mets, Rangers/Senators II, etc.).  My thought would be to leave 9 of the teams from the arcade ROM and sent Houston to ROM 2 for Detroit.  Ty Cobb, Denny McLain... they probably can't hang with the Yanks, but not many teams can.

The other options would be the Twins/Senators, Orioles/Browns, Pirates, Phillies, Indians, and White Sox.  The Senators had very few good years before moving to Minnesota, the Browns were consistently a laughingstock, the Phillies were mediocre for a long time, and the Sox have been about as successful as the Cubs, only with fewer great players.  The Indians haven't been much better than the Phillies.  The Pirates are probably the best bet (Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell), but I don't know who they should replace.  Maybe the Reds, but the Big Red Machine of the 70's probably has enough oomph to hold them off.

Real quick, looking over that diamond mind page I found the best teams to probably be:

That's 7 teams, which leaves us with 3. The next level seems to be:

Reds, Tigers, Cards, Pirates and Indians.

So we have to eliminate 2. If you put Bonds on the Giants, the Pirates unfortunately look to be out. If you put McGwire on STL (and you wouldn't hurt OAK by doing it sice the have double X), then STL would probably be a keeper.

So adding the cards & removing the Pirates, you have to pick 2 from:

Reds, Tigers, and Indians.

I think before we dismiss one, someone should post potential lineups (with 4 subs), so we can really see who has an advantage.

Oh yeah, I forgot, they do post a Negro League team. Even though the stats look woefull, you have to remember they really didn't keep stats for that league. It could be a good idea to maybe save a spot on rom 1 for them. I mean, 50 years of black players have to make up a pretty sick team. Also if you're interested I know enough about Japanese baseball to make a Japanese all time team.

Here is my vote for an all time rom.  I take it that the format is going to be 10 NL and AL.  In picking these 20 teams I feel that you have to consider two factors, history and market.  Obviously history is important becuase it includeds such a huge volume of players and market is important because it includes a huge volume of fans (more fans = more rom popularity.  Here are my choices in no particular order.  The teams with a * next to them should be included without question.

I'm gonna say we go with the Tigers and Indians along with the 8 previously selected teams (Yanks, Dodgers, Giants, Cards, Cubs, BoSox, A's, Braves).  The Reds can be the powerhouse of ROM 2 (Senators/Twins, Browns/Orioles, White Sox, Pirates, Phillies, then a few of the early 60's expansion teams, like the Mets and Senators/Rangers).

I'm going to try doing some plugging on ROM 1.  It oughta be interesting...

Hey, sucka free, I was just comparing your all-time Giants team to the all-time Giants team I put together on a ROM last summer, and they almost exactly matched.  The only differences were that I didn't use relief pitchers (even then, my top two starters matched yours) and that we had two different position players - I picked Alvin Dark instead of Rich Aurilia at SS (in retrospect, your choice was better; I underestimated how long he'd played for the Giants and DQ'd him because of that), and I had Bob Brenly instead of Benito Santiago at C (Brenly was with the Giants longer and had better peak stats).  It's as if we had a Vulcan mind-meld, only several months apart.
