Good stuff Hath and Teddy...

I think Jerry is spitting the teams out at this point, that's the beauty of the database.  Get a base going and you can edit things you think about later on.  If you know the managers of the teams, add them to the pages as Jerry is making them...

It really is the best part about the wiki factor, is that people can keep adding to and revising existing pages, so they get better and better!

Nice piss-n-vinegar by JerryD on the Santana page:

Couldn't have said it any better myself...

fightonusc

First page completed - a ranking of the Top Ten players in each of the offensive categories, plus the Overall Offensive Value of all 120 players based on my weighted ranking system.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

Gantry

Wow, that is impressive work sir!  You might want to use headings for each category though.  Example:

== Top Ten Power Rankings ==

The cool thing is that after 3 or 4 of them, it creates a table of contents to use.  I gotta go over some of those numbers, very nice though.

Gantry

Gotta jet for awhile, thanks to Hath, Jerry and USC for the great work so far.  I think I'm going to spend tonight playing with it.  I'll be back, Dee-Nee!

hey gantry.  i have only veiwed the pages a bit, but if they can be edited by anyone, then could they be sabotaged, or have a dumbass that dont his stuff about rbi re-write them?

if so is there a way to store the pages somewhere here, just in case?

The old revisions are automatically stored as part of the Wiki software, so no need to worry about that.

Gantry, I'm glad you finally did this.  Perhaps one of the greatest ideas ever.

I'll be on board to put all my stupidity behind this project.  Can't wait to fuck it up.  But it'll have to wait until I finish up my graduation weekend/vacation.

DEE NEE!

EDIT Maybe I won't be able to help on this.  My stupidity is in full effect.  Gonna have to learn this shit.

I just wiped my ass then smelled the toilet paper.  What's wrong with me?

Hell, I'll give it a try.  Since I've proposed one of the terms we have used before, I'll try to work on the terms.  It might be as easy as a copy/paste job, but I might try to 'improve' it (especially the SHD).  Wish me luck in not fucking the whole shit up  :P

Edit 1:  Anything by G-Funk/Garrett Mackenzie will be me, whenever I fucking learn enough PHP.  Hell, I've always wanted a reason to learn it.  ::)

Edit 2: Not as hard as I thought, but here's the basic (copy/paste) version.  I'll work on it more when I'm more awake.
Everywhere I travel, tiny life. Single-serving sugar, single-serving cream, single pat of butter. The microwave Cordon Bleu hobby kit. Shampoo-conditioner combos, sample-packaged mouthwash, tiny bars of soap. The people I meet on each flight? They're single-serving friends.

Just like nightwulf to be old school and use Perl4 (smiley)

Great start F-Gunk!   As you see, you dont' need to know php at all to use the wiki, all you need is to lean a few wiki syntax commands.  It's kind of like a new forum, just gotta figure out what bolds, what links, etc...

And don't worry buddy, you are the first fourm member to get his own RBIdb page - http://dee-nee.com/wiki/index.php/Nightwulf - whipped that up last night.  If you want your full address and phone number on there, I can certainly oblige...

Gantry

Please stay out of the database folks, upgrading the software....

Gantry

OK, the db is back up and on the newest stable version of MediaWiki.

Tasks for today

1) Make the search give you the option to make a page.  That way if you search for "Wally Joyner" and nothing comes up, you can click an option to make the page.

2) Have the software notify you immediately if you someone had added something to your talk page.  The talk page is similar to a PM, you can leave other users questions/comments.  Very handy to know right away if someone left you a message.

Those are today's goals...   And a Harry Spilman page

Gantry

OK, you can now search for a page - if there is no match for what you searched, you can click a link and create a new page.  Very handy

Nails

Added a page for Darryl Strawberry, though I forgot to log in when I did it...
I've been swimming in raw sewage ... I love it

Gantry

Nice work Nails, a few suggestions which you'll see from my edit.  Don't take this as a criticism, more of advice for all

1) Always include the name of the article in the first sentence and bold it.  It's a wikipedia convention and it helps with clarification.

2) Make a Wikilink for everything that might be relevant.  Only wikilink the first instance of a term, not everytime on a page.  You got most of them, but I added ones for RBI and NES.  On wikipedia, this is tremendously useful and gets the reader going on all sorts of tangents.  I might be looking up a city in England - 15 minutes later I'm looking at The Legend of Zelda or something.

Good stuff though, keep it up all!

BeefMaster

I'll have to get contributing to this.  I've done it a little before (I contributed a couple bios for WikiTwins, including Dan Gladden), so I should be able to handle it.

Brilliant idea, Gantry.

Gantry

WikiTwins uses MediaWiki, the same software as the RBIdb, so you'll be right at home...

I want to stress that we all have plenty of time to get this database going, so there is no rush to do anything immediately.

And for those who are intimidated by the software, just ask any questions.  It's not tough, honest!  If you are super-intimidated, you can post a page for a player/term/whatever here and someone can cut and paste...

But I gotta stress, if you can post on the forums you can handle the wiki.  Just a learning curve...

Gantry

If anyone want to start with a player bio, I wikilinked all the players in fightonusc's page:

http://www.dee-nee.com/wiki/index.php/Overall_Player_Rankings

Just click a name and start typing a bio.  It's that easy!  You should sign up before working on a page if possible though.  Keeps all your stuff organized and you can watch the pages you work on.  That way you can always click on "my watchlist" and see if there have been any changes to the pages you made...

Gantry

The notify settings work for the talk...  So basically if you go to any user's Talk Page, you can leave a message and it notifies the user next time they log in.  Was working all along, but regardless...

Very handy way to talk to someone about the database, because they see that they have messages until they click on their talk page.

If you want to leave a signature when using a talk page, enter "~~~~" (without the quotes) and it puts your username and the date/time in for the squigglies...
