The numbers don't lie, from nightwulf's editor:

14 Left Curve
10 Right Curve
56 Stamina

He pitches slow as shit, but that's a fuckton of curve.  And more stamina than anyone in the NES version.  Wow, I had no idea...

ultimate7

In one of the few competitive games I've played on the arcade machine, I shut Bandur out with like 20 Ks, and Walters pitched 8 innings.

If you play 1 SP that stamina is huge, and those curves are great, pitches slow enough that you can curve late.

The combo of high stamina and low speed is gotta be a good one.  Cause even when his endurance runs out, the drop in speed isn't as dramatic...

The pressing is question is - why the fuck is Bucky Walters so good in this game?

Just looked up his stats, in the year of his RBI stats, 1939, he was fkndominant.  Won the MVP by a huge margin and won the pitching triple crown - led the league in Wins, ERA and Strikeouts.  How many pitchers have gotten their form of the triple crown?

In Rob Neyer and Bill James' pitchers book, can't remember the name, its been discussed here before, there is a nice write up about Walter's career and the '39 season.

I  recommend this book, when I created the Arcade II ROM, I used this as my #1 source for pitcher info, plus the main write-ups for selected pitchers, Bucky Walters, Billy Pierce, and others were great.

By the way, thanks for adding all the links, Gantry.  I figured I could get around to doing that later, when I went back and read through how to do, but I thought it would be a good idea just to get some info out there while I had a little time.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

Glad to help!  I find myself becoming most useful tidying up pages other people make.  I watch the recent changes page like a hawk...

Even as a Reds fan I didn't realize how good Walters was back then, especially '39.  He's somebody you don't ever hear much about but I saw alot of stuff on him at the Reds HOF before the game yesterday.

I've never even used him much on the arcade even though I play with the Reds more than anyone.  Of course this probably won't help me much in straight pitch.  May have to play a game or 2 vs the CPU just to try him out.

Baines may have hit a homer with Baines, yelled Baines and immediately changed into a Baines jersey.

You know who's the best? Baines...

Damn, in '34 the kid had 56 RBI.

He only pitched in two games, though - he appeared in 108 games as a 2B and 3B.  It looks like '35 was the first year that he was primarily a pitcher (he appeared in 3 games at other positions and pitched in 24).

I concur wholeheartedly.  I had never used him until last night.  I had looked at this thread last week.  I am a Mario Soto guy.  He was a childhood favorite, so I had never used Walters, though I play with the Reds almost exclusively on Arcade.

Walters Vs. Yankees last night

Innings pitched - 9
Strike outs - 18
Batters Faced - 28
Hits - 2 (1 with 1 out in the 8th to break up a perfect game and a Roger Maris HR with 2 out in the 9th)
I came so close to a perfect game vs. the Yanks.  The Mick broke it up with a single up the middle.  Dimaggio grounded into a DP.  Maris hit one of the longest homers to center that I've ever seen, then the final out was made.

Bucky Walters = almost unhittable

I probably could have ended the game in the 7th by the 10-run rule, but by that time I was fascinated by the prospects of a perfect game.

Nice...  was this on an actual arcade game or the emulator?

I bought a stand-up RBI machine off eBay last year.  It was refurbished from an old Donkey Kong machine.  It's kind of cool, because you can still see Mario, DK, etc around the outside of the plexiglass covering (at least I think it's cool, being both an avid RBI and DK fan)

ultimate7

This is a good idea, I think I'm gonna go for the perfect game with Bucky, maybe I'll try for 27 Ks.
