I was playing RBI today and for some reason decided to type RBI into yahoo which caused me to find this site. Well after reading it for awhile, I noticed that Gantry I think regarded Spilman as this great pinch hitter. Two hours later I'm playing my brother who is the Giants. So in a crucial situation with the bases loaded he goes to pinch hit his pitcher. I remember the praise Spilman received on this faq so just to see how good he is I tell my bro to sub in Spilman because the guys on the internet raved about him. He puts Spilman in and his first reaction is..".267 with 1 HR? This guy sucks. Now I know why you wanted my to put him in." Next pitch I throw in inside curveball. Spilman takes it deep over the scoreboard. The rest is history.

Yes, the best thing I ever learned from this site (besides step by step instructions on how to put your balls in a chicks ass) is the power of Spillman.

Gantry

I'm glad the site is having some effect on the folks out there.  If there's one legacy I leave when I die, it's - "he kept the RBI world from using Robbie Thompson"

Spilman is the BEST pinch hitter in the game, not named Sheridan.  He is money all the time and in every game.

Dryden

Realizing it's an all-star team, wouldn't McGwire actually be the best pinch hitter in the game?

Quality, quality post.

I decided to take you guys' advice and use Spilman rather than Speier or Aldrete, with horrid consequences.  Three at bats, three double play balls (2 were inning ending double plays, and the other would have been had there not been two outs).  Definitely a bad choice on my part.  I may have to officially retire Spillman from my repertoire forever.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s at RBI tourneys, my team was always the Giants, and Spillman did a great job for me in the 8 hole, he was slow as fuck, but had power, especially in the clutch. Aldrete usually hit in leadoff, and occasionally Speir when he showed a good attitude on the bench.

Spilman should be batting in the #1 hole.  Aldrete and Speier are brutal.  Again Spilman should be batting #1.

Jones would be my #3 best bench guy.

#1 Sheridan
#2 Spilman
#3 Jones

Perhaps Jones could get the nod over Spilman due to the added speed, but them again they all run the same speed when you hit homers.

Gantry

Some notes about Spilman:

1)  While I love the fella, he's no Ruppert Jones.
2)  He can't hit lefties for shit
3)  He isn't as effective in straight pitch

Still a stud, but you still should pick his spots...

No. I usually go with Aldrete, and Speir occasionally against lefties. I put Spillman in the 8 spot as the clean up man for the bottom of the lineup. And  Thomspson sucks. Aldrete has done ok for me, but nothing super. However he did win me a tourney back in high school in the Championship against AM. Putting Spillman in leadoff is useless because he is hitting after a pitcher.

Wilfong

I think Spillman is effective in straight pitch. He went deep 3 times for me yesterday (along with J Leonard's 3 bombs). He's mortal against lefties though, much like Wilfong. I'd say they're almost the same player.

My top PHs vary on the situation, but for an entire game I'd go with:

1. Rupert
2. Bush
3. Armas
4. Teufel
5. Madlock

I might give Sheridan a closer look next time I'm Det though.

Bush and Teufel? There both solid at best.

My top 10 (sorry spilman--probably #11 just in front of Wilfong)

mac
murphy
armas
burks
jones
henderson
madlock
lindman
hendrick
sheridan

(armas/burks/jones could be flipped any which way.  Depending on the situation, hey are equally good.)
