i just experienced a glitch during the punt. i made a short punt by accident and my team covered it so well that the return team couldn't even get to it. both teams eventually got tired and the movements seemed to slow down considerably. so we just kept running around the ball and protecting it until the return team just quit and eventually ran off screen. i'm gonna go ahead and declare victory by forfeit.

Sorry, I just ran the season and that is what happened. It's a tough league Ultimate....I run the other Dynasty rom next tourney....this ROM favors the offenses, the other ROM favors the defenses and the Bears will be a lock to win that one...
Brent Jones had a crucial fumble that gave the 83 Skins the momentum to overpower the defending NFC champions the 89 Niners.
Riggins and Theisman looked impressive (I watched the game on high speed), and Jerry Rice torched Darryl Green...
76 Raiders 17

The no name defense caused 4 turnovers as Griese and company capitalized on all four turnovers and converted them into points. The 72 Dolphins won in business like fashion as they clearly outclassed the 77 Broncos.
89 49ers 19
90 Giants 22
Carl Banks stripped the ball from Roger Craig in Giants territory with 50 seconds left in the game. The turnover led to a Matt Bahr field goal to send the game into overtime. Both teams did not manage much offense in overtime.
The game was decided by special teams as Lawrence Taylor sacked the punter which set up the game winning field goal.
The defending NFC champion Giants sacked Montana 10 times and consistently applied pressure throughout the whole game.
64 Browns 14
68 Jets 20
The 68 Jets won an ugly contest on the strength of two interceptions that stopped two crucial drives by the Browns. The Jets ability to run the ball was the difference of the game. Joe Namath missed his targets all night and Jim Brown only had 4 carries which shocked everybody in the stadium.
73 Vikings 10
85 Bears 31
With Walter Payton out of the game due to an injury, the defense of the 85 Bears stepped up in putting a lights out performance by suffocating the Vikings offense and limiting them to 68 yards total offense.
Jim McMahon got great protection as he played a flawless game. The Vikings lone touchdown came off a fumble recovered by Jim Marshall.
63 Chargers 40
72 Dolphins 26
With the game tied at 26, the AFL's 63 Chargers scored 14 points unanswered points in a span of three minutes in the 4th quarter as they pulled away from the 72 Dolphins in an evenly contested battle.
80 Falcons 14
90 Giants 33
The Falcons jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter as Steve Bartkowski fired a couple of td passes in the midst of the Giants furious pass rush.
Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring for the Falcons this day.
The 90 Giants scored 33 unanswered points as their defense recorded 7 more sacks. The defending NFC champions will face the winner of the 77 Cowboys-85 Bears game.
58 Colts 25
68 Jets 7
The 58 Colts won with great defense and used different looks to confuse Joe Namath.
Johny Unitas carried the offense and managed the game effectively as the 58 Colts inched a step closer to the Superbowl.
77 Cowboys 0
85 Bears 20
After a quick recovery from a heart attack earlier in the week, Mike Ditka gave an emotional speech before the Cowboys game in which he emphasized playing smash mouth Bears football.
The 85 Bears shut out the explosive Cowboy offense as they played another game of lights out defense. The Cowboys were limited to 2 first downs and 62 yards total offense. The Bears have not given up an offensive touchdown in the playoffs.
Walter Payton came back from an injury and rushed for 123 yards and Matt Suhey added 53 yards against the doomsday defense.
Tom Landry observed that the Bears defense was better than the Steel Curtain and easily the best ever.

The current playoffs are from the other dynasty rom. Some teams are the same, and others different. The 85 Bears, 89 49ers, 72 Dolphins, 76 Raiders, and 90 Giants are the only teams in both roms. The rom that I am running now, has higher defensive parameters...for instance, the 85 Bears on this rom is much better than the 85 Bears that played in the first two playoff tourney's.
Okay, more action from the conference championships...
AFC Championship63 Chargers 10
58 Colts 24
With the game tied up at 10 going at halftime, coach Weeb Ewbank demonstrated that he is still one of the best in the business at making halftime adjustments. He changed the defense from a 3-4 and switched over to a 4-3. The change proved to be effective in stopping the Chargers running attack and gettting a good pass rush from his front four and dropping 7 back in coverage. The Colts did not allow a first down in the second half as well as zero points.
Johnny Unitas passed for 2 td passes in the second half with surgical like precision.
NFC Championship
90 Giants 14
85 Bears 28
The Giants had the ball at their own 10 yard line trailing 19-14 in the fourth quarter. Phil Simms was sacked two consecutive times by Dan Hampton. The last sack produced a safety that put the 85 Bears up 21-14 with 2 minutes remaining. On first down from the Bears 45 yard line, Willie Gault showed his world class speed as he hauled in a 40 yard reception that set up Walter Payton's game winning td score.
Walter Payton carried the offense as he rushed for 117 yards on 11 carries.
The Bears defense recorded 7 sacks, two safeties, and an interception in another impressive effort. The Bears limited the Giants to only two sacks as they often went to max protection and 3 step drop backs.
The 85 Bears will now face the 58 Colts in Superbowl III.
Superbowl III
58 Colts 14
85 Bears 21
Jim McMahon's 3 scrambles for 62 yards proved to be the difference in Superbowl III. All three of his scrambles set up the Bears 3 scores.
The Bears defense gave up 17 yards of rushing and 126 yards passing as they contained Johnny Unitas. Both defenses only registered 2 sacks a piece, but there was constant pressure on both McMahon and Unitas.
Walter Payton rushed for 64 yards on 9 carries and added another 63 yards of receiving. The game was toughly played as time ran out on the Colts last drive.

The Jets never really threatened at any point during the game as they turned in a flat effort.
85 Bears 31
79 Rams 0
The Bears defense set an NFL record by smothering Vince Ferragamo for 17 sacks.
The defending champions jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead in which the first play from scrimmage was a 65 yard td run by Walter Payton.
The defending champions sent a clear message to the league that they plan on winning back to back superbowls.
76 Raiders 37
77 Broncos 0
A jubilant Al Davis and John Madden were all smiles on the sidelines as the 76 Raiders took the orange and crush out of the Broncos.
The Raiders offense performed like a well oiled machine as they scored on every possession. The Raiders rushed for 214 yards and the Snake Stabler looked as good as ever with all the time in the world to throw the ball behind his massive offensive line.
The 1 time Superbowl champion Raiders recorded their first ever shutout in tecmo playoff history.
89 49ers 7
53 Lions 9
The Lions scored the go ahead touchdown with 1:23 left to play in a tightly contested defensive battle.
Jerrry Rice was double covered all day and Montana had no time to pass against a ferocious Lions defense. The Lions were heavy underdogs coming into the game, but they showed why the game is played on Sundays.
75 Steelers 46
64 Browns 3
It was the most lopsided victory in the history of the Tecmo playoffs. The Steel Curtain imposed their will and Franco Harris had a huge day as the 75 Steelers won in convincing fashion.
90 Giants 19
85 Bears 16
Matt Bahr kicked the game winning field goal in overtime as the 90 Giants defeated the defending Tecmo Bowl champions.
Dave Meggett became the first player ever to rush for over 50 and 100 yards on the 85 Bears. It proved to be the difference in the game as he picked up crucial first downs to sustain drives.
The Giants won the turnover battle 5-3 as it very well determined the outcome of the game.
I demand an investigation!
72 Dolphins 35
76 Raiders 14
The no name defense shut down a very potent Raiders offense as they frustrated Stabler all day. Paul Warfield had a huge day and probably sealed the game as time ran out in the first half by scoring on a 60 yard td pass to give the Dolphins a 21-7 lead going into halftime.
Al Davis did not allow John Madden to shake Don Shula's hand after the game. The reasons are unknown at this time..
73 Vikings 9
53 Lions 6
Alan Page had 6 sacks and two forced fumbles as he led the purple people eaters to their first ever NFC title game.
Field positioning and special teams proved to be the difference in the second half as the Vikings had the advantage in working with a shorter field throughout the second half.
The Lions defense kept the game close as they chased Fran Tarkenton around all day and recorded 8 sacks and causing 4 turnovers which kept the game close.
The 73 Vikings will meet the 90 Giants in the NFC title game.
The Giants are 5 point favorites according to the early line.
72 Steelers 17
72 Dolphins 31
On a summer like day at the Orange Bowl, the Miami offense melted down the Steel Curtain. Bob Griese threw for 3 td's and Paul Warfield scored on two bombs for td's as he continues to make big plays in the Tecmo playoffs.
The no name defense contained Swann and Stallworth and demonstrated tremendous discipline with the zone coverages which was clearly designed to take away the big play capabilities of Terry Bradshaw.
This will be the first appearance of the 72 Dolphins in the Tecmo Superbowl.
NFC Championship
90 Giants 38
73 Vikings 10
Offense wins games, and defense wins championships commented Bill Parcells. The Vikings were shutout in the second half and were unable to keep up with the balanced attack of the Giants. Ottis Anderson powered his way to 101 yards and his forearm punch to break tackles surprised many observers who thought that the purple people eaters would be able to contain the Giants running game.
Stephen Baker the touchdown maker scored 2 td's on the courtesy of two blown coverages off play action passes.
The 90 Giants will now make their second trip to the Tecmo Superbowl where they will face the 72 Dolphins. Their first trip to the Tecmo Superbowl in Tecmo Bowl II, they lost to the 76 Raiders.
Tecmo Superbowl IV
72 Dolphins 17

Down 17-15 in the fourth quarter, Phill Simms marched the Giants 70 yards and threw the game winning touchdown to Dave Meggett.
With under two minutes to play, the Dolphins threatened to score in Giants territory, but the Bill Belichick Giants held off the last surge by Griese.

Joe Namath threw a costly interception in the end zone with 2 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. Willie "the hammer" Lanier stepped in front of an ill advised Namath throw and returned it for a touchdown to put the 69 Chiefs ahead for good.
Hank Stram called his famous 65 counter trap play (see NFL films) on all of his running plays which was held in check by a resilient Jets front four.
The difference in the game was Len Dawsons ability to scramble which accounted for 30 yards on crucial third downs.
82 Redskins 16
85 Bears 37
The 85 Bears overwhelmed an excellent 82 Redskins at Soldier Filed on a balmy like evening.
The Redskins had no answers for the explosive and efficient attack of the Bears offense. Walter Payton averaged 15.5 yards per carry and scored 4 touchdowns. Jim McMahon shared the ball with 5 different receivers and threw a 72 yard strike for a touchdown to Emery Moorehead.
The Redskins did manage to move the ball, but could not string enough good plays together to produce more points against a lights out defense. Mark Mosley missed three field goals which gave the momentum away.
75 Steelers 31
64 Browns 14
The Steel Curtain forced 4 turnovers and turned them into 28 points as they soundly beat the 64 Browns at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Brown_Tiger_Stadium)
Mel Blount intercepted the ball two times on consecutive possessions that gave the 75 Steelers a comfortable 17-7 lead going in to halftime.
The Steel Curtain loaded the box daring Frank Ryan to take chances. Frank Ryan had little time in the pocket all day and threw the ball into tight one on one coverage on every pass. The margin of error was small, and a speedy, tough and smart Steel Curtain set the tone and dominated the game.
Terry Bradshaw threw two touchdown passes to Lynn Swann and Jim Brown was contained to 75 yards on only 8 carries.
89 49ers 17
90 Giants 44
The 90 Giants came out of the locker room after halftime with a cold and fiery attitude on defense. They shut down Montana's offense on the strength of registered 8 sacks in the second half and scored 30 unanswered points.
On offense, the 90 Giants steamrolled George Seifert's defense and gashed them for 219 yards rushing. Ottis Anderson and Dave Meggett saw huge holes all day behind the brutte force of Jumbo Elliot and Mark Bavarro.
Ottis Anderson was injured in the 4th quarter and his status is in question.
Asked about the West Coast offense, Bill Parcells said that the "East Coast defense is what wins championships." Defensive coordinator Bill Belichick made a brief statement after the game " we executed better than they did".
72 Dolphins 7
69 Chiefs 10
An inspired Chiefs defense shut down the powerful running game of the 72 Dolphins on a muddy battlefield at Arrowhead Stadium.
Willie Lanier knocked Bob Griese out of the game with a concussion in the first quarter. Lanier also forced and recovered a fumble in the endzone to stop a Miami drive late in the 4th qtr as he ran the ball back into Miami terriotory which set up the game clinching field goal by Jan Stenerud.
Earl Morral's magic ran out as he came in relief. He was sacked 4 times and terribly missed his targets all day.
The 69 Chiefs had a tough time against a very stingy no name defense. The Chiefs did manage to put together a methodical 92 yard touch down drive in the first quarter and scored on a Len Dawson sneak.
85 Bears 24
66 Packers 7
Vince Lombardi and his Packers had no answers against a swarming Bears defense on a frigid day at Lambeu Field.
The Bears defense stopped the run and ran the ball effectively in advancing to the NFC Championship game. Richard Dent recorded 5 sacks and was a demoralizing force all day. Walter Payton rushed for 123 yards on 12 carries and scored 3 touchdowns.
In an interesting twist during the game, cameras caught Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka choking each other directly after a Jim McMahon interception.
76 Raiders 17
75 Steelers 10
Fred Biletnikoff caught a 37 yard game winning touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to play to secure a spot in the AFC Championship against the 69 Chiefs.
Kenny the snake Stabler took a vicious hit by mean Joe Greene as he just released the ball which found it's way into Biletnikoff's hands. The massive Raiders offensive line gave Stabler good protection all day against the Steel Curtain.
One of the NFL's historic rivalries was viewed by more than 30 million viewers according to the Nielson ratings. John Madden, who was the fastest to reach 100 wins, commented that Al Davis gave an inspirational speech before the game, "win it for yourselves, win it for California, and just win baby".
77 Cowboys 21
90 Giants 17
Tom Laundry's sophisticated offense jumped out to a 21-0 lead on it's first three drives and it proved to be just enough as the 77 Cowboys held on for a 21-17 victory over the 90 Giants.
Dave Meggett spearheaded a Giants comeback as he scored two touchdowns and combined for 171 yards rushing and receiving. Phil Sims threw a critical interception early in the 4th quarter in Cowboys territory as he tried to squeeze a pass into double coverage to Stephen Baker the touchdown maker.
The Doomsday defense were led by a furious pass rush in which Ed too tall Jones and Randy White combined for 8 sacks. On offense, Roger Staubach surgically dissected one of the league's best defenses on the Cowboys first three opening drives. However, after the third touchdown, the Cowboys only managed 2 first downs.
The 77 Cowboys will face the 85 Bears in the NFC Championship game. It will be student against teacher. Mike Ditka served as offensive coordinator on Tom Laundry's coaching staff during the 70's. It will be smash mouth football against sophistication, the 46 defense vs the doomsday defense.
AFC Championship
69 Chiefs 7
76 Raiders 28
The autumn wind blew the 69 Chiefs right out of Oakland as the 76 Raiders won the AFC Championship in convincing fashion by a score of 28-7.
Oakland jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half on the strength of their pass defense which registered 4 interceptions that Ken Stabler and his offense converted into 28 points. The Raiders defensive backs pillaged the passing attack of Len Dawson. Len Dawson could not figure out the Raiders defense as he passed for 6 yards, completed 22 percent of his passes, and threw 4 interceptions into blanket coverage.
The Silver and Black will be making their second Tecmo Super Bowl appearance as they await the winner of the 85 Bears-77 Cowboys epic match up later today.
NFC Championship
85 Bears 31
77 Cowboys 21
The 85 Bears 46 defense forced a punt in Bears territory with 4 minutes remaining in the game with the Bears leading 24-21. The Bears then drove 80 yards capped off by a 26 yard touch down run by Walter Payton to seal the game 31-21 and advance to Super Tecmo Bowl VI.
Walter Payton gashed the Doomsday defense and rushed for 111 yards on 10 carries providing steady first downs for the Bears. Jim McMahon completed 70 percent of his passes and threw a TD pass to Matt Suhey in the first quarter. The Bears famous 46 defense stuffed Tony Dorsett, but could not contain Drew Pearson (3 catches/188 yards).
The Bears defense did force 3 turnovers which proved to be the difference as the Bears won the turnover battle 3-2.
The Cowboys relied on big plays to set up all three of their scores with long touchdown passes from Staubach to Drew Pearson. Other than that, the Cowboys had a tough time with the 46 defense.
The 85 Bears will face the 76 Raiders in Superbowl VI.

Superbowl VI
The Raiders offensive line stole the show in Superbowl VI.
Kenny Stabler had all day to throw the football behind arguably the best offensive line ever to step on the field. The Bears feared and celebrated 46 defense were unable to contain Kenny Stabler and Cliff Branch.
The 76 Raiders were able to convert over half of their 3rd downs and took full advantage of Jim McMahon's costly 3 interceptions.
Jim McMahon chose a bad day to have one of his worst games ever. Much of the credit deservedly goes to the Raiders physical defensive backfield.
The Raiders now have a Tecmo fantasy record two Lombardi's to showcase. Al Davis proudly accepted the Lombardi trophy from an unenthusiastic Pete Rozelle.

Joe Gibbs did not shake Bill Belichick's after the game as it appeared that the Patriots ran up the score when the game was very well decided.
I'll be running the second version of the dynasty rom...it's the one with higher offensive parameters. So expect more scoring and luscious stats. All I do is run a season on skip from week 1 to week 17 (full speed throttle) then run with the teams I was given. I don't have time or the patience to keep running seasons to get whatever matchups I like.

LC Greenwood, Joe Greene, Jack Lambert and Jack Ham put on a furious show stuffing Terrell Davis, forcing 3 fumbles and applying constant pressure on John Elway. Mel Blount recorded two interceptions.
On offense, Lynn Swann made two acrobatic catches in the endzone and ended up with 140 yards. John Stallworth was injured in the first quarter, but Rocky Bleir and Randy Grossman picked up the load in his absence.
"Terry Bradshaw played brilliantly" said Chuck Noll. The 78 Steelers will be making their second Superbowl appearance. The lost to the 83 Redskins in Tecmo Superbowl VIII.
In other news, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Romanowski were seen fighting on the sidelines in the second half. It was reported that Romanowski spit on Shannaon Sharpe's face in an act of expression on his effort. Romanowski said that him spitting on Sharpe's face was not racially motivated.

Kurt Warner found his rhythm in the 4th quarter and threw the game winning touchdown pass to Terry Holt with two minutes remaining.
Without Marshall Faulk in the game due to injury, the Greatest Show On Turf limped all game against the Doomsday defense.
However, Trung Candidate filled in like a hero and helped the Rams convert crucial first downs in the 4th quarter. With an all out blitz by the Doomsday defense on 3rd and 10, Warner hit Terry Holt on the sidelines for a 64 yard touchdown pass that was ultimately the game winner.
Staubauch and the Cowboy's sophisticated offense stalled at midfield with under a minute remaining. Defensive coordinator Lovie Smith's version of the Tampa Two had a dominating effort against America's Team as they harassed Roger the dodger all day and forced him into errant throws. Grant Wistrom and London Fletcher both combined for 6 sacks.
Mike Martz credited Trung on his tough running which was instrumental in keeping the Doomsday defense on their heels.

stillllllllllllerzzzz
I never noticed that aspect. True, Dunn was a Falcon in 02. I just run the games people. I did not create the rom. Mistakes happen.
The protest is overruled. The 85 Bears were served some serious pw3nage by Dunn. They deserved to lose by allowing some dude under 180 pounds to go off like that on the 46.
In future matches, Dunn will not sniff the field. I'll see to it that happens.
The Tecmo Superbowl will be played Sunday. Happy Holidays.

78 Steelers 21
01 Rams 24
Issac Bruce scored the game winning touchdown on a 55 yard touchdown reception to give the 01 Rams a 24-21 lead with 4:13 remaining in the 4th quarter.
After a pair of possessions, The 78 Steelers had one last chance to pull out the win. Starting on their own 12 yard line with under 1:50 left to play, Terry Bradshaw got the Steelers to midfield. A normally sure handed wide open Lynn Swann dropped a perfect pass delivered to him by Terry Bradshaw on 4th down in Rams territory and well within field goal range. The Rams took over on downs and ran out the clock to capture their first ever Tecmo SuperBowl Championship.
Marshal Faulk was once again injured in the first quarter, but the Greatest Show On Turf showcased their balance of offensive arsenal power by being able to overcome the loss of Faulk against the celebrated Steel Curtain.
"'First things first. I have to give praise and glory to my Lord and Savior up above. Thank You, Jesus,' Kurt Warner told the public. With those words, quarterback Kurt Warner, MVP of Tecmo Super Bowl XI, wrapped up an incredible season, and once again, with his family watching from the stands, Kurt will be part of Tecmo Super Bowl history" said Kurt Warner, a deeply religious man.

Up 14-0, the 88 Bengals turned the ball over 4 times which led to 24 Charger points.
With a 24-21 lead with under 3 minutes to play, the Chargers were forced to punt from their own 8 yard line. Sam Wyche and Boomer Esiason took advantage of great field position as they managed to march 63 yards in just over a minute and score the winning touchdown to send Air Coryell home for the playoffs.

Dungy's two deep defense bent a lot during the game, but managed not to give up a huge play the entire game as Walter Payton was contained. Jim McMahon struggled on key third downs as he was off the target a few times.
Vikings head coach Denny Green was not the least bit surprised over his team's victory over Ditka's Bears. Even offensive coordinator Brian Billick chipped in and confidently stated that he had no doubt that his offense would be able to move the ball effectively against Buddy Ryan's 46 defense.

Out of ten times in RL? I'd say Chicago 9-1. And that's being nice to Vikings fans.
The other dynasty rom that I run with the classic teams, Chicago's defense is the best defense I have ever seen on any Tecmo rom...they arguably could be the best team ever to step on the Tecmo field on any rom. I run that rom next tourney this week.
On this rom, their defense is not as superior as the other dynasty rom. Offense rules on this rom.

Thurman Thomas (1 TD) was injured in the second quarter and left the game, but Jim Kelley played effectively and was able to compensate with successful high percentage throws in the no-huddle "K-Gun" offense.

Terry Bradshaw hit the acrobatic Lynn Swann in the endzone with under a minute remaining for the game winning touchdown in a highly competitive game that saw 4 lead changes.
With 2:29 remaining, the 88 Bengals were down 21-20 and marched 80 yards on the strength of Sam Wyche's no huddle offense. Eddie Brown made a diving catch into the endzone on a perfectly thrown ball by Boomer Esiason. But the 78 Steelers showed why they were the team of the 70's with an inspired drive led by Terry Bradshaw.
The difference in the game was field goals. Too many of them by the 88 Bengals. The Bengals twice settled for a field goal and missed one before intermission.

Randall Cunningham ran out of time on the 01 Rams 42 yard line as he was violently sacked by Grant Wistrom.
The explosive Vikings passing offense was shut down by Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith and his Tampa Two defense he learned under Dungy.
However, Robert Smith and Leory Hoard combined for 165 yards rushing and their heroic efforts kept the 98 Vikings in the game.
Randall Cunningham suffered one of his worst days ever as a professional as he passed for 19 yards and connected on 16 percent of his passes.
Dennis Green and his vaunted 98 Vikings once again fail to advance to the Tecmo Super Bowl while the Greatest Show On Turf appear to have that swagger that reflects the extreme confidence of innovative head coach Mike Martz.

In a highly anticipated match up of two great teams, only one team showed up. The 98 Broncos jumped out to a 17-3 lead by halftime and never looked back as they blew out the 90 Bills 38-17.
Terrell Davis was unstoppable all night and showed the world why he is one of the best running backs ever to play. TD rushed for 168 yards on 13 carries as he made John Elway's job easy as quarterback.
Asked by reporters about his age and future in coaching, Marv Levy replied "The age factor means nothing to me. I'm old enough to know my limitations and I'm young enough to exceed them."

John 'the diesel' Riggins was held to 47 yards on 10 carries, but still managed to score two toucdowns.
Barry Sanders was contained, but still managed to rush for 114 yards on 14 attempts. Erik Kramer had little time to throw the ball as he was harassed all day by Charles Mann and Wilber Marshall.
The 82 Redskins will host the NFC Championship at RFK Stadium as the Greatest Show On Turf brings it's high powered offense into the nation's capital.
Hi Darky did you put this rom together?

78 Steelers 10
98 Broncos 21
The ball bounced the 98 Broncos way today as they recovered 3 fumbles and converted all three fumbles into 21 points and are on their way to their first Tecmo Super Bowl ever.
Terrel Davis fought intense migraine headaches all day and gave the Steel Curtain a heavy dose of his downhill running as he rushed for 143 yards on 20 attempts.
Mike Shanahan elected to limit the passing attempts for John Elway against the Steelers furious pass rush as he called for only 7 passing plays.
Elway threw for only 53 yards, but they were effective yards that moved the chains. Having Terrel Davis in his backfield made that decision easier.
The 78 Steelers were shut out in the second half which killed potential drives in Bronco territory. Franco Harris and Rocky Bleir each fumbled once in the second half, and Terry Bradshaw was intercepted as well.
NFC Championship
01 Rams 24
82 Redskins 17
After an explosive first half that featured all the offensive fireworks a fan can wish for (17-17), the second half was the polar opposite that a traditionalist can appreciate.
Marshal Faulk scored the go ahead touchdown in the third quarter as the 01 Rams held on for a 24-17 AFC Championship victory.
London Fletcher blocked a Joe Theisman pass and prevented a possible game tying touchdown as time ran out on Joe Gibbs and his Redskins.
Marshal Faulk rushed for an amazing 118 yards on only 6 attempts. Kurt Warner had an efficient day and made no mistakes. He threw 2 touchdown scores to Issac Bruce and hit Trung Candidate for a couple of big gains as the Greatest Show On Turf demonstrated how hard it is to defend their offense.
The turning point in the game came on the 82 Redskins opening drive of the second half inside the redzone. Cedric Jones stepped in front of a Theisman pass in the endzone and stopped a would be go ahead score.
The 01 Rams defense surprisingly were able to put good pressure on Theisman all second half by using some exotic blitzes that seemed to confuse the vaunted Hogs.
The defending champions 02 Rams will return to the Tecmo Super Bowl and defend their title against John Elway's 98 Broncos in TSB XII.
Kurt Warner was asked by a reporter if they would be the second team to repeat since the 85 Bears, " If it's God's will" replied a deeply faithed Warner.

Behind the strength of Terrell Davis record rushing performance of 263 yards and some defense that would make the Orange Crush proud, the 98 Broncos captured their first ever TSB trophy with a commanding 42-21 victory over the defending TSB champion 01 Rams.
After jumping out to a 14-0 lead at halftime and surprising the world by shutting out the Greatest Show On Turf in the first half, the 98 Broncos offense never slowed down in the second half. They scored 28 second half points and scored on all but one possession during the Super Bowl.
Kurt Warner hit Issac Bruce for a 65 yard touchdown strike on the 01 Rams opening drive in the second half to tighten up the game 7-14, but that would be the closest Mike Martz would come to Shanahan's Broncos.
Terrell Davis was named TSB MVP. He rushed for 263 yards on 25 attempts and scored 5 touchdowns. All TSB records. John Elway managed to throw one touchdown pass to Shannon Sharpe and played an efficient game and not turning the ball over.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. In the AFC championship, TD got the ball 20 times. So 45 carries in the last two games is a Tecmo Bowl record. He's one of the best backs in any rom. Still kinda weird how the computer decided to give him so many carries. In the next playoffs I am going to run, I've noticed that the 64 Browns do not give Jim Brown so many carries a game. He gets maybe like 7-10 carries a game in ROM 1....strange.
I already ran a couple of games in the next playoffs, and the Jim Brown did not get so many carries.
I'm running ROM 1 this next playoffs, it's the ROM with defensive parameters and with more older teams. The Broncos in rom I will be running next are from 77. So them repeating does not look good. Juggernaut 85 Bears is the team to beat on that rom. I'd say the 01 Rams are the team to beat in ROM 2 (the one I just ran).
I'm gonna compile some stats soon for all the games played and the individual stats as well for some fun.
And mr rbi...I did not make these roms.

Don Chandler slipped on the extra point attempt and was unable to lift the ball in the air properly as Alan Page blocked the extra point.
Alan Page had a monster day stuffing the run and terrorizing Bart Starr for 7 sacks and another 5 hurries.
Bart Starr threw two crucial picks in Vikings territory. The Purple People Eaters showed the Tecmo world that their defense deserves to be recognized with some of the best.
Bud Grant refused to have heaters on the sidelines during the game. "We don't have them at home at Metropolitan Stadium, so there is no reason to do it on the road in arctic temperatures."

I think Ditka's conservative approach on offense was a huge factor to holding back the Bears after 85. Also, him yelling at Jim Harbaugh and going apeshit on him all the time cause he made audibles at the line did not help either.
Ditka ran the offense, and was very uncreative a lot. He allowed very little audibles and loved to run the ball on 3rd and anything...But agreed on McMahon being injured to much...part of the reason.

The Raiders took a 14-10 lead at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but their defense failed to stop Griese and company. The No Name Defense shut down the explosive Raiders offense and won the battle in the trenches against the Raiders vaunted offensive line which features 3 HOF. He stole that idea from Bill Walsh when Walsh put Bubba Paris in the backfield in the NFC Championship game in 84...it was to make a statement and ridicule Ditka for his over zealous approach to smash mouth football and playing real football. Ditka claimed that the Niners did not play real football with Walsh's offensive approach.
Sweetness did make some nice throws and was one of the best ever, but my post still stands. Ditka was a stubborn idiot on offense. Drop your ego Ultimate. Truth is truth. I used to hate watching the Bears on offense.
Payton was stopped a lot, due to teams crowding the box and not worrying about Ditka getting creative or doing anything out of the ordinary. Ditka should have taken more pages from Landry back when he was Landry's puppet with the Cowboys.

Don Shula's brilliant game plan called for 3 step drop backs to avoid the furious pass rush of the Steel Curtain. Bob Griese made great pre-snap reads all day as he rolled up 303 yards passing.
Paul Warfield put the game out of reach with a 48 yard td reception making the game 38-24. Griese was sacked only once and had great protection by his offensive line.
John Stallworth provided most of the offense against the under appreciated No Name Defense by catching 4 passes for 145 yards and three scores. The No Name Defense loaded the box to stop Franco Harris and Rocky Bleir as well as double teaming the acrobatic Lynn Swann all day. The game plan worked and Don Shula will now move on to his second Tecmo Super Bowl in search of his first championship.

William Perry bull charged all day through a seemingly paper wall which was the Vikings offensive line and registered 7 sacks and had a handful of tackles behind the line of scrimmage on running plays. Lezlie Frazier intercepted a Tarkenton pass and took it to the house. The 46 defense appears to be unstoppable right now commented Vikings coach Bud Grant.
On offense, Jim McMahon led the offense with some big passes and scrambles. Willie Gault showed off his world class speed on a 63 yard touch down pass.

In a game watched by 120 million viewers according to the Nielson ratings, Tecmo juggernaut 85 Bears relied on their trademark stingy defense to ruin the 72 Dolphins perfect season in TSB XIII.
Despite turning the ball over 5 times, the 72 Dolphins No Name defense kept the game from being a blowout by limiting Walter Payton and playing tough pass defense.
However, the 46 defense was that much better. The 85 Bears hit hard all day and shut down the Dolphins powerful running game and caused 5 turnovers, two of which in their redzone. Gary Fencik intercepted a Griese pass in the 4th quarter to protect a 14-10 lead.
On offense for the Bears, Willie Gault caught a couple of big passes and scored the game securing touchdown late in the 4th quarter to make the score 21-10 and that's how it stayed.
The 85 Bears captured their 4th TSB Lombardi trophy and their 3rd in the last 5 Tecmo seasons which has created a lot of dynasty talk.
Mike Ditka's also became the winingest coach in Tecmo and was quoted as saying " it's simple, we hit the snaught out of people and run the ball to win". Jim McMahon who once again wore his trademark headband with Rozelle written on it said Ditka needs to let him pass more so we can dominate more.

The 76 Raiders used a suffocating defense and big plays on offense to easily win over the 64 Browns.
George Atkinson and Jack Tatum played on the fringe of what was legal football as they took out 2 starting receivers in the first half with malicious and vicious hits on any receiver that came into their area, including Jim Brown who was knocked out of the game in the 1st quarter on a swing pass.
Kenny 'the snake' Stabler had an efficient day and connected with Cliff Branch deep on 4 different long strikes. Cliff Branch ended the day with 4 reception for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Legendary coach John Madden credited maverick owner Al Davis for signing players who the league thought was washed up.
Footballs winningest team of the 60's, 70's, and 80's appear poised to make a run at their third TSB trophy.
NFC Divisional Playoffs
The defending champion 85 Bears and the 46 defense manhandled the celebrated Hogs and the rest of Joe Gibbs' 82 Redskins as they cruised to a 31-10 victory.
Jim McMahon and Willie Gault connected for 3 touchdowns as Willie Gault showed his world class speed by blowing by Darrell Green all day in helping Ditka's Bears jump out to a 24-0 halftime lead.
Arguably the best defense ever to take the field, Buddy Ryan's 46 defense, simply overpowered the 82 Redskins in all phases of the game.
The 85 Bears now move on to the NFC Championship.
Best team ever...
AFC Divisional Playoffs
The Steel Curtain forced and recovered a fumble deep in their own territory with under two minutes to play to seal the victory over the 72 Dolphins and ending Shula's perfect season.
The No-Name-Defense and the Steel Curtain were both brilliant all day. Both defenses created turnovers and created scoring opportunities for their respective team by giving their offense a short field to work with. All the points in the game came off turnovers and all the scoring was the result of each team working with a short field.
Franco Harris scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. The 72 Dolphins mounted their best drive of the day, but came up short as Mel Blount stripped Paul Warfield of the ball at the Steelers 7 yard line.
The Steelers will now face their most fierce rivals in the AFC Championship game, the 76 Raiders.

I love this thread. How are you playing these games? Are you running computer mode until playoffs and then going game by game from there? I love seeing the game results after each one.
Thanks for doing this.
I have been playing mostly the Steelers and the Redskins on this rom.
Keep it up

What's up lrod 4...thanks for the appreciation buddy.
To answer your question, yes. I sim the season and then place the playoff teams on com mode and watch the games n' take snapshots. It's really interesting and fun. I have an excel sheet and will do some fun stats later on this week maybe. I flip-flop between the two dynasty roms...the 85 Bears are really good on this rom because of their d-line...and the 76 Raiders are the one team who can slow down the 85 Bears defensive front with their hall of fame line. Depends on the players condition of course.
Next recap coming up...
NFC Divisional Playoffs XIV
The team of the 60's, Lomardi's 66 Packers, overcame an early 13-0 deficit and outclassed the heavy underdog 80 Falcons 31-13.
Bart Starr threw had a brilliant day and threw for 261 yards while the disciplined and opportunistic 66 Packers cashed in on three Falcon turnovers as they dominated the Falcons in the second half.
With the 66 Packers down 13-7 at halftime, head coach Vince Lombardi, a master motivator, gave a very impassioned speech at halftime which put a scare into the 66 Packers and lit a fire into them. Lombardi said, " Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate. "
AFC Championship XIV
Two of the superpowers of the 70's and one of the best all-time rivalries between two blue collar teams was renewed at a gusty Three Rivers Stadium in a shootout that ended with a sea of Terrible Towels waving in a collective celebration.
The 75 Steelers took the lead for good with 2:32 minutes remaining as Franco Harris iced the game. Madden's 76 Raiders quickly scored quickly on a Stabler to Branch bomb, but failed to recover the onside kick with 1:03 minute left.
Rocky Bleier stole the spotlight as he combined for 171 yards rushing and receiving and making crucial first downs with huge plays and leaping grabs. Mark Van Eeghen ran right through the celebrated Steel Curtain for 173 yards. The difference in this game was a Dave Casper fumble which resulted in to 7 points for Bradshaw and Stallworth.
The 75 Steelers now move on to TSB XIV and make their 3rd overall TSB appearance, and first as the 75 Steelers in this ROM as they seek their 1st ever Lombardi trophy. The 78 Steelers lost to the 83 Redskins in TSB VIII and the 01 Rams TSB XI in the other ROM.
NFC Championship XIV
At an icy and frigid Lambeau Field, the defending champion 85 Bears found a way to win in overtime without their star QB Jim McMahon who was knocked out in the second quarter.
Walter Payton caught a 49 yard pass to set up the game winning field goal as the 85 Bears will now move on to TSB XIV in quest of an unprecedented 5th STB Lombardi.
The bad news is that they may have to do it without Jim McMahon whose status is uncertain for the Super Bowl and that the Steel Curtain awaits them.
Jeff Fuller relieved McMahon and looked lost. The Bears were up 10-0 in the second quarter and appeared to be cruising to a blowout. The 66 Packers gained momentum when McMahon was knocked out and Paul Horning tied the game up with 5 seconds left in the game. However, the 85 Bears won the coin-flip and scored on their first drive to end the game.
The 46 harassed Bart Starr all day and shut down the Lombardi's highly touted sweep. The 66 Packers did manage to score a touchdown on their final drive in regulation, and it seemingly looked like a drive of pure will inspired by Vince Lombardi screaming from the sideline. The 66 Packers never saw the ball again but played their hearts out as nobody in the Tecmo world gave them a chance against the juggernaut 85 Bears.
TSB XIV
In a highly anticipated defensive struggle between the 46 defense and the Steel Curtain, the 85 Bears showed the TSB world just how powerful and stingy their defense is as they shut down the team of the 70's and won a TSB record 5th championship as well as repeating.
With 19 seconds remaining in the contest, Kevin Butler made a 16 yard field goal to win the heavyweight match up. The drive was set up by a Matt Suhey 39 yard reception with under a minute to play. QB Steve Fuller, filling in for an injured J.McMahon, played conservativly the entire game, but took a shot down field and caught the Steel Curtain in man-to-man defense as Suhey blew by Jack Ham in the game's biggest play.
The game was a classic struggle for field position. There were over 15 total sacks in the game and not much offense as both QB's were held under 70 yards in the game. Terry Bradshaw only managed 21 passing yards and had very little time to even get the ball off on three step drop backs. William the refrigerator Perry manhandled HOF Mike Webster and disrupted just about every play.
Walter Payton was injured in the second quarter as well as his replacement T.Sanders. After Walter's departure, the Bears only managed 31 rushing yards on 14 attempts. But an opportunistic defense provided all the offense for both teams. All the points in the game came off turnovers. The 85 Bears turned the ball over 3 times as well as the 75 Steelers.

I'm feeling The Bears on this one...
I'm about to run the first game. Bear in mind that the 85 Bears are going for an unprecedented 3-peat and 6th TSB title. Also, this is the other ROM---the one where offense rules. So it's not going to be easy for the 85 Bears. I'm thinking the Greatest Show On Turf, America's Team, or Fout's 81 Chargers will win this one.
AFC Wild Card Round
In a highly anticipated match up of the Run N' Shoot offense of Warren Moon's Oilers and the elegant and dangerous downhill running of Terrell Davis, it was Terrell Davis who stole the stage at the Astrodome.
Terrell Davis set a TSB rushing record by shredding Jack Pardee's defense for 317 yards on just 15 carries. Terrell scored all 4 touchdowns on either 40 yards or more. The longest coming on a 73 yard run.
NFC Wild Card Round
On an unusually balmy day at Lambeau Field, Brad Johnson and the warm weathered Buccaneers felt right at home.
Brad Johnson and Jacquez Green connected for 3 scores while Keyshawn Johnson also caught a couple of touch down passes.
The Bucs jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the second quarter and never looked back as they ran away with it by scoring 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter.
AFC Wild Card Round
In a wild finish at PSINet Stadium, Cliff Branch caught a 52 yard touchdown pass from Ken Stabler on the game's last play to shock one of the best defenses ever to step on the field.
All the scoring came in the second half as each team when into the locker room at halftime registering no points.
John Madden was told to get his big butt off the field as he was in a state of confusion and bewilderment due to the final play of the game.
Brian Billick offered an all out assaulted rant towards defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis for calling a blitz on the game's last play. The blitz left Cliff Branch on one-on-one coverage with Duane Starks which happened to be a huge mistake.
NFC Wild Card Round
Marshall Faulk caught a 28 yard touchdown with 1:02 remaining to give the Greatest Show On Turf a dramatic victory at home over Tom Laundry's America's Team.
The Doomsday defense was no match for the high octane offense of Mike Martz's creation.
Terry Holt led the way with 5 receptions for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
Captain Comeback( Roger Staubach) ran out of time as time expired at the Rams 35 yard line. Golden Richards was tackled before getting out of bounds on the game's last play.
Asked about the 01 Rams chances of dethroning the two time defending champion 85 Bears in their next game, Martz confidently replied "they don't have a chance".
XV AFC Divisional Playoffs
On the game's first play at Mile High Stadium, Thurman Thomas was injured and forced to leave the game. However, Marv Levy's 90 Bills overcame that and dominated the 98 Broncos with a total team effort.
Kenneth Davis filled in superbly as he rushed for 111 yards. Andre Reed caught 2 touchdown passes and had 134 yards recieving while James Lofton added a pair as well. Jim Kelly's "No Huddle K-Gun offense" was running on all cylinders as they seemingly scored on every possession.
Terrell Davis was a non-factor this game as the Bills defense smothered the box with up to 9 men on some plays. John Elway was off all day and could not take advantage of the one-on-one match-ups that he saw all day.
A jubilant GDavis was captured periodically on tv during the game holding up his ambitious sign "Billieve".
XV NFC Divisional Playoffs
Joe Montana, the game's greatest quarterback, and his West Coast Offense surgical dissected Monte Kiffin's two-deep defense with eloquent precision.
Montana completed 80 percent of his passes for 300 yards and connected with Jerry Rice for three touchdowns. Jerry Rice has an average day by his standards as he caught 4 passes for 120 yards. The only bad news for the team of the 80's was that John Taylor was injured in the third quarter. Mike Wilson did step in his place as he caught a touchdown.
The team of the 80's now move on to the NFC Title game and will play the winner of the 01 Rams-85 Bears game.
XV AFC Divisional Playoffs
Charlie Joyner tied the game at 28 with no time remaining on a 37 yard touchdown pass which sent the game to overtime.
The 76 Raiders missed a crucial field goal in overtime and from there Air Coryell's Chargers did the rest as Dan Fouts hit Kellen Winslow deep into Raiders territory which set up a 27 yard chip shot field goal and win for the 81 Chargers.
The epic game saw the lead change 4 times as an old rivalry was renewed on this magical day in San Diego. Air Coryell will no take it's act to Orchard Park to square off Jim Kelly's hurry up K-Gun offense for the AFC Championship.
XV NFC Divisional Playoffs
THERE WILL BE NO 3-PEAT!
Marshall Faulk caught a 6 yard touchdown pass with 59 seconds left in the game to give the 01 Rams a triumphant victory over the two time defending champion 85 Bears.
The juggernaut and five time TSB champion 85 Bears took the lead with 2:12 remaining in the game as Jim McMahon found a streaking Willie Gault down the seam for a 69 yard touchdown pass. However, Kurt Warner and the Greatest Show On Turf quickly marched down the field on Buddy Ryan's celebrated 46 defense. Marshall Faulk caught a key 53 yard pass and was brought down at the 6 yard line with just over a minute to go. Mike Singletary was left in single coverage with Marshall Faulk which proved to be a huge mismatch.
The 01 Rams will now face their old rival the 89 49ers in the NFC Championship game. The two organizations once had a fierce rivalry when the Rams played in Los Angeles. The game should be an interesting offensive match up of the high octane offense of the 01 Rams and the precision oriented offense of the 89 49ers.
XV AFC Championship
The 90 Bills will be making their second trip to a Tecmo Super Bowl.
Filling in for an injured Thurman Thomas, Kenneth Davis scored the go ahead touchdown with 45 seconds remaining from 25 yards out. K.Davis finished the day with 127 yards on 11 attempts.
Charlie Joyner put the 81 Chargers up 28-24 on a 35 yard td pass from Dan Fouts with 2:42 remaining in the game.
Accustomed to the hurry up offense, a cool headed Jim Kelly drove the 90 Bills 85 yards with a mix of run and passing plays from the K-Gun offense and left virtually no time for Air Coryell to mount a last second drive.. The 81 Chargers Achilles heel, could not be avoided as they could not stop the 90 Bills on the crucial drive.
Marv Levy handed the game ball to GDavis for his relentless faith and for rallying the city of Buffalo around the slogan "Billieve".
XV NFC Championship
The 89 49ers converted two Kurt Warner interceptions into 14 points and jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead and never looked back as they move on to face the 90 Bills in TSB XV.
The two teams faced in TSB V (original TSB ROM). The 90 Bills beat the 90 49ers 31-28. This will mark the third appearance of the 49ers in a TSB, and the 90 Bills their second appearance.
The momentum appeared to stay with the 49ers once they went up 14-0 after a crucial interception in the end zone by Ronnie Lott which killed a 01 Rams drive on their opening possession.
George Seifert used 5-6 defensive backs on almost every down as he slowed down the Greatest Show On Turf in St. Louis.
The highly celebrated and original West Coast Offense, operated by Mike Holmgren, was as precise as ever as Montana surgical dissected the Rams defense. The story of the day was Jerry Rice and his huge day. The greatest receiver ever to step on the field once again shined in the games biggest stage. Rice caught 7 passes for 228 yards and added a pair of touchdowns.
Montana was brilliant as he threw for 338 yards with an 88 completion percentage.
In other news, John Taylor is still injured and his status is uncertain for TSB XV.
Tecmo Super Bowl XV
With reserve running back Kenneth Davis going down in the second quarter, and with Thurman Thomas already out, Marv Levy turned to Don Beebe as his running back. It turned out to be a wise decision as Don Beebe scored the game winning touchdown of TSB XV with 1:16 remaining.
On the ensuing drive, the 89 49ers mounted a desperate drive. However, Joe Montana was sacked by Bruce Smith at midfield with 30 seconds remaining and ending the game as the 89 49ers turned the ball over on downs.
With the score even at 21 with just over two minutes to play in the 4th quarter, Jim Kelly engineered a 73 yard touchdown drive using the no-huddle offense. Don Beebe made the big plays to set up his 4 yard touchdown run to give the Bills a 28-21 lead. It proved to be enough as the 90 Bills captured their second TSB Trophy.
Don Beebe was named TSB MVP. The crafty and fast veteran combined for 184 total yards out of the backfield. He was too much for the slower Niner linebackers to cover out of the backfield.
With key injuries plaguing the 90 Bills, Marv Levy offered this to the media "we Billieved".

On a gusty day at Three Rivers Stadium, the team of the 70's pulled away from the 98 Broncos in the 4th qtr as the 78 Steelers scored 21 unanswered points.
The Steel Curtain forced 2 fumbles in the 4th quarter which led to 14 points. The Broncos committed 4 turnovers overall to the swarming Steel Curtain led by Jack Lambert.
Franco Harris rushed for 116 yards to lead the Steeler offense.
Why are the '01 Rams in this game?
I don't know Mike. That's how the ROM is. I didn't make the ROM, but the dude has a lot of SB losers in the game. I see his point, he has the 83 Redskins in there as well. Meaning that those teams were arguably better than the teams that won the SB (according to all the stats up until the SB). Th 83 Skins and the 01 Rams were top three as far as highest scoring teams ever until the Pats destroyed that.
You bring up a good reminder. I really need to create my own 'Dynasty' ROM. I don't like the arrangement of teams this dude put in there.
I'll run more games later when I get back from a date/encounter.
NFC Playoffs XVI
The Greatest Show on Turf was led by Marshall Faulk and their underrated defense as they shut down the second highest scoring offense of all-time, the 98 Vikings.
The 35-7 dominating effort surprised many who thought the game would be a shootout. However, Randall Cuningham never found his rhythm while Mike Martz kept the Vikings defense off-balance all day by mixing the pass and run.
A dejected Denny Green told the media "they are who we thought they were".
AFC Playoff XVI
Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris each fumbled twice and gave Air Coryell a short field to work with all day as the 81 Chargers converted all 4 turnovers into touchdowns and ending the 72 Dolphins perfect season.
Chuck Muncie found holes all day to run through as he rushed for 129 yards on 9 carries.
Both QB's had accuracy problems as they battled a tropical storm at the Orange Bowl. Bob Griese only completed 18 percent of his passes while Dan Fouts only completed 33 percent of his passes.
NFC Playoffs XVI
The celebrated Hogs and the 3rd highest scoring offense in NFL history simply dominated the Dooms Day defense. America's Team was thoroughly beaten in all phases of the game in this great NFL rivalry.
Arguable the greatest white running back ever, John Riggins, rushed for 120 yards to lead the way. The 83 Redskins showed great balance as they totaled 181 yards rushing and 183 yards passing.
Roger Staubach was pressured all day and his passing stats for the day paint a clear picture.
Darrell Green blanketed Drew Pearson as Pearson was held without a reception while Joe Theismann produced an efficient day.
The outcome of the game was a shock to many observers who were anticipating a much better showing by the 77 Cowboys. Legendary coach Tom Landry was unavailable for comments after the game.
AFC Divisional Playoffs XVI
The 78 Steelers won the turnover battle 3-1 and managed to slow down Sam Wyche's hurry up offense as they won against their old AFC Central foes 28-21 on a crisp day at Three Rivers Stadium.
Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleir rushed for a Touch Down to put the team of the 70's up 28-14 with 3:40 left to play. On the ensuing possession, the 88 Bengals marched right down the field and scored with just over a minute to go to make it 21-28, but they failed to recover the onside kick and Terry Bradshaw took a knee to end the game.
It should be noted that the 88 Bengals played without their star running backs Ickey Woods and James Brooks. Both were inactive due to injuries for the game. TV ratings took a hit without any chance of Ickey Wooks doing his famous Touch Down dance of the 'Ickey Shuffle'.
NFC Divisional Playoffs XVI
Kurt Warner hit Isaac Bruce down the sideline for a 43 yard touchdown pass with seconds remaining in the game as the Greatest Show on Turf beat the team of the 80's 24-17 in dramatic fashion.
Although the 89 49ers were outgained 328 to 127 on offense, their defense managed to keep them in the game by forcing 3 fumbles, two of which were bone crushing hits by HOF Ronnie Lott. Ronnie Lott forced Marshall Faulk to leave the game with a concussion in the first quarter.
Without Faulk, the 01 Rams still had more than enough weapons to compensate. Kurt Warner completed 68 percent of his passes for 307 yards and threw 3 touchdown passes as he completed passes to 6 different receivers in the game.
49er owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. fired George Seifert immediately after the game and brushed off all corruption related questions by the media regarding former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards.
It was overheard among some spectators that Bill Walsh mentioned something about how he should have never retired after the 88 season and how much it hurt to see his team with the winningest decade in football history go down to the hated Rams.
AFC Divisional Playoffs XVI
Captain Comeback Jim Harbaugh struck once again at Jack Murphy Stadium.
Down 28-21 with just over two minutes remaining, Captain Comeback led the 95 Colts to a field goal and a game clinching touchdown pass in heroic fashion to stun the 81 Chargers and Air Coryell.
After a Cary Blanchard field goal with just over a minute remaining and on the ensuing possession, Dan Fouts inexplicably dropped back to pass on first down in Chargers territory and was intercepted by Ray Buchanan. From there, Jim Harbaugh had just over a minute to work with to drive his team 26 yards for the win.
Harbaugh hit reserve running back Lamont Warren on a screen pass that resulted in a 19 yard touchdown pass to shock the 81 Chargers 31-28.
Marshall Faulk rushed 9 times for 184 yards while Tony Siragusa registered 3 sacks on the day to lead the 95 Colts.
The 95 Colts and Captain Comeback will now take their act to Pittsburgh for the AFC championship game.
NFC Divisional Playoffs XVI
Brett Favre hit Andre Rison for a 30 yard gain to the Redskins 17 yardline in overtime to set up a game winning field goal by Chris Jacke as Mike Holmgren's Packers beat the 83 Redskins 24-21 at RFK Stadium.
Down 21-14 with just under two minutes left to play, Brett Favre engineered a beautiful and desperate 87 yard drive which resulted in a touchdown pass to Mark Chumura with no time remaining to send the game into overtime.
Joe Gibbs inexplicably called for an onside kick after losing the toss for overtime, and the Packers recovered the ball on the Redskins 47 yard line. It took one play to get into field goal position as Andre Rison found an open spot on the perimeter of the blitzing defense Washington had called.
Brett Favre finished with 266 yards and 2 touchdown passes with no interceptions which brought a smile to Mike Holmgren's face. Mike Holmgren has exerted a lot of effort and did his share of screaming his head off after every Favre interception since he's been tutoring Favre who was a raw product when he came over from Atlanta.
AFC Championship XVI
With 1:19 remaining in the game, Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleier rushed 4 yards for the winning touchdown as the team of the 70's will make their 4th appearance in the Tecmo Super Bowl.
Captain Comeback Jim Harbaugh led his 95 Colts back from a 14-3 deficit in the second half and put his team up 17-14 with 2:30 remaining to play.
Terry Bradshaw then masterfully drove the 78 Steelers downfield on the strength of a 46 yard acrobatic catch by Lynn Swann. With first and goal from the Colts 4 yard line, Rocky Bleirer ran through a huge hole to give the Steelers a 21-17 lead.
Captain Comeback's magic fell short as time expired on his 95 Colts and their improbable run in the playoffs ended at midfield as he was sacked by Mean Joe Greene.
The 78 Steelers will be looking for their first TSB victory ever. They have previously lost to the 01 Rams, 83 Redskins, and the 85 Bears.
Legendary coach Chuck Noll seemed confident about his team's possibilities in TSB XVI.
NFC Championship XVI
Brett Favre and the 96 Packers dismantled the 01 Rams 35-24 and will make their first ever appearance in a Tecmo Super Bowl.
Brett Favre hit Edgar Bennett on a trademark Holmgreen screen pass to put the 96 Packers up 35-17 with just over two minutes remaining left to play at a frigid Lambeau Field. The Greatest Show on Turf scored a late and meaningless touchdown on the game's closing seconds to make the score seem closer than it really was.
Reggie White and Gilbert Brown terrorized Kurt Warner all day as they sacked him a combined 8 times with 6 hurries. Brett Favre had a spectacular day as he completed 83 percent of his passes for 275 yards including two long strikes to Andre Rison.
Mike Holmgren's West Coast offense was the more efficient one today and clearly was running on all cylinders while Martz's celebrated Greatest Show on Turf had it's problems getting into gear on the frozen tundra. Much credit should be attributed to Fritz Shurmur's scheme and the hard hitting of LeRoy Butler who knocked Marshall Faulk out of the game in the first quarter as well as causing 2 fumbles on the day.
The 96 Packers will now face the 78 Steelers in TSB XVI. Both teams will be seeking their first ever TSB trophy.
Tecmo Super Bowl XVI
Reserve halfback Sidney Thornton scored a 5 yard touchdown run in the final seconds of the third quarter to put the 78 Steelers ahead for good 28-17 as the team of the 70's held on for a 28-24 victory and capturing their first ever TSB championship.
The difference in the game was the Steel Curtain and Franco Harris. The Steelers forced 3 fumbles in their own territory to kill productive drives by the 96 Packers. Those three fumbles led to 14 points. Franco Harris (121 yards rushing/2 td's) helped control the clock by moving chains in the 4th quarter and keeping the ball away from Mike Holmgren's west coast offense led by legendary qb Brett Favre.
Brett Favre had a productive day against the Steel Curtain but the fumbles by Dorsey Levens, Brett Favre, and Mark Chmura just proved to be too devastating. Brett Favre hit Andre Rison for a touchdown pass with under a minute remaining to reduce the deficit 24-28, but the Packers failed to recover the ensuing onside kick. From there Terry Bradshaw took a knee and ran out the clock.
Jack Ham was named TSB MVP with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

AFC Wild Card XVII
In a highly anticipated track meet, the undefeated 07 Patriots were the only ones to show up and continue their march to perfection.
The high powered record breaking offense led by Tom Brady scored on every possession as they routed the 91 Oilers. Warren Moon and his run n' shoot offense had their problems outdoors at a windy and rainy Gillette Stadium.
Tom Brady connected with Randy Moss for 4 touchdowns to lead the surge while Belichick's defense forced 2 fumbles and an interception and forcing the run n' shoot to punt on key drives in the first half.
Coach Belichick quickly commented on his team's dominating performance, "we executed better than they did. Everybody did their job".
NFC Wildcard XVII
The 90 Giants played inspired defense and used ball control offense as they pulled away in the second half to beat the host 96 Packers 29-14.
Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall combined for 10 sacks on the day as the entire Giants defense terrorized the 1996 MVP Brett Favre and limited him to a meager 113 yards passing. In the fourth quarter, Lawrence Taylor sacked Favre and forced a fumble which was picked up by Everson Walls for a touchdown to put the game away for good.
Otis Anderson and Dave Megget combined for 136 yards and moved the chains all day with a mix of brute power and lightning quickness.
AFC Wildcard XVII
The 81 Chargers dominated the 72 Dolphins in all facets of the game on a beautiful day at Jack Murphy Stadium.
Air Coryell was running on all cylinders with a collection of big plays and methodical drives. Dan Fouts had a brilliant day as he had his way all day with the No-Name defense. The HOF QB completed 83 percent of his passes and threw for 3 touchdowns. His first came on a 80 yard strike to Wes Chandler on the 81 Chargers opening drive. The quick strike set the tone for the high powered offense of Air Coryell and seemingly struck fear into the No-Name defense as the momentum was clearly with the Chargers all day.
The surprising story of the day was the Charger's defense. The 81 Chargers defense, who were ranked 27th out of 28th in 1981, came up with best effort of the year as they limited Don Shula's efficient offense to only 133 total yards offense and no touchdowns.
NFC Wildcard XVII
Renewing an old rivalry from the Black and Blue/Frostbite Division division on a blistering cold day which provided plenty of snow at Soldier Field, the 1985 Bears played fierce Bear football as they overwhelmed the 1953 NFL champion Lions in the fourth quarter to win 14-0.
Buddy Ryan's 46 defense took center stage as they relentlessly dominated the Lions offense and knocked out HOF QB Bobby Layne out of the game in the fourth quarter. The 85 Bears registered 13 sacks, three fumbles, and only gave up 56 total yards (TSB record) and one first down. The 53 Lions never entered Bears territory and were limited to 3 and outs on all of their possessions but one. Bobby Layne had pressure in his face all day in the pocket and really had no chance in completing a string of passes to mount any kind of threat.
On offense, HOF RB Walter Payton rushed for 110 yards through the teeth of the celebrated Lions defense as he provided all the offense the 85 Bears would need. J.McMahon had a rough day as he was harassed by the Lions pass rush and had problems throwing into the swirling wind. He did manage to connect with Willie Gault for a 24 yard touchdown pass as he beat a ferocious Lions all-out blitz in the middle of the fourth quarter.
Walter Payton added a 22 yard touchdown run towards the end of the game to deliver the final blow. The Bears were shutout for the first three quarters due to a tough and well prepared Lions defense as well as the brutal weather in Chicago.
After the game, Buddy Ryan was seeing yelling at Mike Ditka on the sidelines. According to various sources, Buddy Ryan was not pleased with the offensive effort of the 85 Bears and questioned Mike Ditka's lack of creative playcalling on offense. Mike Ditka told the media that "we play smash mouth football and hit the snaught out of people, and that's our plan--simple Bear football".

Tom Brady's record setting day against the Steel Curtain shattered many long held beliefs of how a superior defense wins championships.
The 2007 NFL MVP passed for a TSB record 441 yards and 6 touchdown passes as he shredded the defending TSB XVI champion 1978 Steelers in leading the 07 Patriots to a 49-14 rout at Gillette Stadium.
Donte Stallworth exploited single coverage all day with much attention regulated to Randy Moss. Stallworth caught 6 passes for 272 and added 3 touchdown scores. His reception yards fell 30 yards short of the TSB record held by Jerry Rice. Randy Moss also registered over a 100 yards receiving despite the double team coverage all day.
The undefeated 07 Patriots, the highest scoring team ever in NFL history, jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead which rendered arguably one of the best defenses ever in NFL history to complete shock going into the locker room. The celebrated Steel Curtain did not register one sack and gave up the most yards in their storied history---522 yards which is a TSB record.
Mel Blount was seen after the game shaking his head in disbelief to a toothless Jack Lambert as they stood at midfield in disbelief. To many TSB observers, the general consensus was that the Steel Curtain were supposed to dominate and intimidate. That's what they do, but not on this day in which the 78 Steelers could not figure out Brady's shotgun spread offense that Josh McDaniels orchestrated with brilliance.
During the post game conference, a reporter asked Bill Belichick if the 07 Partriots "had the look", Belichick responded, "everybody did their jobs". Another reporter asked Belichick for a detailed analysis of why the Steel Curtain never sacked Brady, " he got rid of the ball" said Belichick.
NFC Divisional XVII
The team of the 80's and their efficient West Coast Offense used a balanced attack as they comfortably defeated the 90 Giants 28-10 at the Meadowlands.
With Phil Simms and Dave Megget out due to injury, Bill Parcells and his power control offense stumbled against a highly motivated and underrated 89 Niner defense. Ronnie Lott intercepted the Hos twice and Charles Haley made life very uncomfortable for the Giants passing attack as he registered 4 sacks and 8 hurries.
Jerry Rice and Roger Craig performed brilliantly as they scored 2 touchdowns apiece.
The victory was highly rewarding for the 89 Niners as they avenged a heartbreaking loss to the 90 Giants in the NFC Title game. The loss ended the Niners attempt at a 3-peat.

Dan Fouts hit a streaking Kellen Winslow to give the 81 Chargers a 45-35 lead with 2 minutes remaining. It proved to be enough to hold off the 98 Broncos in a wild shootout at Jack Murphy Stadium.
The wild shootout featured 4 lead exchanges in the highest scoring game ever in the history of the TSB playoffs, and the 35 4th quarter points set another record.
Terrell Davis set a new TSB record by rushing for 291 yards, but it was not enough in a game that featured no punts. Chuck Muncie and James Brooks combined for 146 yards on 12 carries while Dan Fouts passed brilliantly.
The difference in the game was a Shannon Sharpe fumble in Chargers terrirritory in the 3rd quarter as well as a missed field goal by Jason Elam in the same quarter.
The high powered offense of Air Coryell will compete with the record breaking offense of the 07 Patriots for the AFC Championship game which should be a display of offensive fireworks.
NFC Divisional XVII
Walter Payton scored on 6 yard touchdown run in the second quarter and the 85 Bears defense did the rest from there as the 85 Bears shut down the 77 Cowboys for a narrow 7-3 victory.
On fourth and 10 with 1:03 remaining in the game and with the ball at the Bears 24 yard line, Roger Staubach dropped back to pass and was met by Richard Dent at the line of scrimmage as he tried to scramble for a first down. America's Team turned the ball over on downs and Jim McMahon took a knee to end the game.
The Doomsday defense kept the Cowboys in the game by suffocating the Bears offense all day but on one drive that was set up by a Walter Payton 54 yard scamper into the redzone. Jim McMahon threw two interceptions that killed two promising drives by the Bears. Otherwise the margin of victory would have been much bigger.
Buddy Ryan's defense played lights out once again as they did not give up a touchdown for the second consecutive game. Tony Dorsett had 13 carries for 0 yards and R.Staubach was limited to 85 yards passing and sacked 9 times. The celebrated 46 defense held the offensive juggernaut 77 Cowboys to 86 total yards offense.
However, Staubach marched the 77 Cowboys deep into Bear territory in the final minutes of the game and it appeared that another Cowboy comeback was imminent, but the 46 defense tightened up and saved the day as they held the Cowboys to zero yards from their 24 yard line with just over a minute to play.
TSB juggernaut 85 Bears now move on to battle the 89 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

AFC Championship XVII
The highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL was not denied on a sunny day at Jack Murphy Stadium.
The 2007 Patriots won convincingly 38-24 over the 1981 Chargers and will make their second TSB appearance as they will seek their second Lombardi trophy.
Wes Welker scored on a 25 yard touchdown reverse to put up the undefeated 07 Patriots 35-21 early in the fourth quarter and essentially ended the hopes for Don Coryell. The Chargers next drive ended up in a field goal and the ensuing Patriots drive chewed up the clock behind quick screens and some power running by Lawrence Money which ended up with a field goal and only seconds left.
The game was closer in the first half as both teams were running up and down the field. Dan Fouts drove the explosive 81 Chargers inside the Patriots redzone just before halftime, but threw an ill advised pass to Charlie Joyner in the back of the endzone as Asante Samuel made a leaping grab to intercept the pass and give the Patriots all the momentum going into the locker room.
Donte Stallworth caught 4 passes for 148 yards as Josh McDaniels centered Tom Brady's passing attack around Stallworth who drew single coverage all day with all the attention on Randy Moss.
Bill Belichick offered his analysis of the victory to reporters "we made more plays than they did".
NFC Championship XVII
At a frigid Soldier Field, the 89 49ers jumped out to a 16-0 lead and dominated the rest of the way as they stunned the 5-time TSB champion 85 Bears 30-7.
Roger Craig's touch down put the Niners up 7-0 on their opening drive and on the ensuing drive, Michael Carter sacked Jim McMahon in the endzone for a safety. The 49ers then scored an a 62 yard strike (Montana to Rice) on the first play on the next possession and before the fans could even get settled in their seats, the team of the 80's were ahead 16-0.
Jerry Rice stole the spotlight by burning the 46 defense with 4 catches for 109 yards. The 49ers defense dominated the Bears offense and only yielded 7 points as they contained Walter Payton and sacked Jim McMahon 7 times.
Offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren's brilliant game plan called for multiple 3-step drop backs and an array of slants to counter Buddy Ryan's aggressive blitz schemes as well as keeping Montana's jersey clean.
The 89 49es will make their 4th trip to the TSB. They are 0-3 in all three of their TSB appearances and face a big challenge in matching up with the 07 Patriots in TSB XVII.

Super Tecmo Bowl XVII
In one of the most memorable Tecmo Super Bowls ever, the 07 Patriots won a thriller in overtime to capture their second TSB Championship.
Wes Welker's 43 yard catch deep into 49ers territory in overtime set up S.Gostkowki's game winning field goal.
With the 49ers up 21-14 in the third quarter, Josh McDaniel's reached deep down into his playbook and called for a series of reverses to Wes Welker, one of which resulted in a 58 yard touch down run. The Patriots added a field goal with under 4 minutes remaining, but Montana quickly positioned the team of the 80's for the game winning touchdown with just under two minutes to play. With first and goal from the Patriots 7 yard line, the 89 49ers failed to score a touch down as the Patriots played tough defense by stuffing Roger Craig and Tom Rathman on consecutive runs. Then on third and goal, Montana was sacked by Ted Bruschi and the Niners settled for a game tying field goal to send the game into overtime.
The Patriots won the toss and recovered an onside kick. One play later, the Patriots were in field goal range thanks to a Brady to Welker strike.
Wes Welker was named TSB XVII MVP.
The 49ers are now 0-4 in their 4 TSB appearances. The 07 Patriots completed a perfect season and Belichick was once again brief in his analysis, " everybody did their jobs".

In one of the NFL's greatest all-time rivalries, the highly anticipated Brady-Manning duel turned out to be a blowout.
Petyon Manning's kryptonite, Bill Belichick's cleverly disguised defense, confused and frustrated Manning all day. The Patriots relentless pass rush sacked Manning 9 times, and pressured him into throwing ill advised passes which resulted in 3 interceptions.
It was business as usual for the highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. Randy Moss caught a pair of deep strikes for touchdowns, and Tom Brady threw for 336 yards while completing 82 percent of his passes. When Tony Dungy decided to double Randy Moss, Tom Brady exploited the Colts defense by hitting Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, and Ben Watson all day. The only thing that stopped the offensive juggernaut Patriot offense was the gusty New England wind.
Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick did not shake hands after the game.

John Carney missed a crucial extra point in the first quarter. The rare EP miss came back to haunt him.
The brash 92 Cowboys led by an arrogant Jimmy Johnson overcame a 1st quarter 13-0 deficit and held on to win 35-34 over the 09 Saints.
The game's biggest play came as time expired in the first half. Playmaker Alvin Harper scored on a 67 yard pass from Troy Aikman, and gave the 92 Cowboys a 21-20 lead going into the locker room and all the momentum they needed.
In the second half, the 92 Cowboys scored 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 35-20 lead. Drew Brees and the 09 Saints dynamic offense woke up and scored a pair of touch downs in the 4th quarter to tighten up the contest 35 to 34, but the Cowboys ran out the clock on their final drive.
The Saints were not able to go for a 2-point conversion since the Tecmo rules only administer 1-point conversions after touchdowns. Sean Payton threw his visor at the Tecmo Rules Committee after the game in a press conference.
The 92 Cowboys will travel to Soldier Field to take on the 85 Bears for their divisional playoff. Asked about his chances against Buddy Ryan's 46 defense, Jimmy Johnson yelled "HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!".

An El Niño tropical storm pounded the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for the bitter rivalry between the 98 Broncos and the 76 Raiders. John Madden had a grin on his face before the game, and for good reason.
The drenched and muddy field was the perfect setting for the Hall of Fame Raider offensive line to blow open huge holes all day for Clarence Davis and Mark van Eeghen. The two running backs steamrolled for 275 yards on the ground, Denver's defense had no answers. A severely hungover Kenny the Snake Stabler was only asked to manage the game, and the Raider defense played brutally physical as they limited Terrel Davis to only 54 yards and knocked Shannan Sharpe out of the game thanks to a vicious hit by Phil Villapiano . Chipping in on the defensive front, Jack Tatum registered a sack, the first of his illustrious career.
Mike Shannahan, who once coached the Raiders, appeared more red in the face than ever due to his team's embarrassing loss to his former and hated employer, Al Davis.

There was no lack of excitement in a showdown between Martz's 'Greatest Show on Turf' and Brett Favre's 96 Packers. Marshall Faulk rushed for the game winning touchdown with 45 seconds left, and the Greatest Show on Turf will take their act to Candlestick Park in the divisional playoff.
Down 21-7 in the 4th quarter, Brett Favre rallied the Packers for 14 unanswered points to tie it up 21-21 with 1:45 remaining in the game. After a huge kickoff return to the Packers 46 yardline by Trung Canidate, Kurt Warner completed a laser to Az Hakim to the Packers 18 yard line. Martz then called Marshall Faulk's number two times in a row, and on the second rush, Faulk sidestepped the Packer defense and sprinted towards the endzone to make it 28-21 with 45 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing kickoff, Don Beebe returned the ball to the Rams 42 yardline, but that would be as close as the 96 Packers came as time ran out on Brett Favre's heroics.

In a battle of undefeated teams, the 07 Patriots were perfect as they routed the 72 Dolphins 52 to 21.
The 72 Dolphins committed two turnovers in the first quarter which resulted in 14 points for the highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. Before the fans at the Orange Bowl could finish their first beer, the Patriots were up 21-0.
Tom Brady was laser sharp. The superstar completed 84 percent of his passes for 393 yards as he led his quick strike offense to scores on every drive. The 'No Name Defense" were exposed and Don Shula had no answers for the Brady led machine that severely exploited them.

Kevin Butler missed a potential game winning 54 yard field goal attempt with seconds left as the 92 Cowboys held off the 85 Bears for a 35-33 victory.
In what was expected to be a defensive ball game, both offenses were able to move the ball all game. Emmit Smith became the first player in Tecmo history to rush for over 100 yards over perhaps the most feared defensive unit in the ROM. Jimmy Johnson attributed the success of his running game to the massive and strong offensive line of the Cowboys. They made the 85 Bears defensive line appear ordinary, and it did not help that the entire defensive line of the 85 Bears were in "bad" condition. Buddy Ryan was seen throwing chairs on the sideline, and a little scuffle broke out between him and Mike Ditka.
Michael Irvin scored to TD passes as he took advantage of one-on-one coverage on those key scoring strikes.
Kevin Butler also missed a 27 yard chip shot in the second quarter just before halftime, and his misses turned out to be the difference in a thrilling game.

Terrell Davis had a career day as he rushed for 212 yards in leading the 98 Broncos to a 42-38 victory over the 90 Bills.
The Broncos scored 14 unanswered points in the 4th qtr to pull away from Marv Levy's Bills. John Elway had an efficient day by completing 90 percent of his passes for 217 yards and the Broncos defense stepped up in the 4th qtr by forcing 3 and outs the entire 4th qtr. Jim Kelly's K-Gun offense simply disappeared in the 4th qtr, and the home team fans let them know about it. The Bills defense couldn't figure out Mike Shannahan's lethal downhill running attack and the mix of passes by Elway who enjoyed man-to-man coverage all day.
GDavis didn't address the media after the game.
Bad gameplanning by the Bills D, you have to stack the box to stop TD - even with Elway behind center.

Drew Brees hit Lance Moore early in the 4th qtr to give the 09 Saints a 28-21 lead. That's how the score remained as the 09 Saints overcame an early 14-0 deficit to advance to the NFC Divisional playoffs.
Down 14-0, Reggie Bush got the Saints going with a 68-yard scamper for a touchdown. Marques Colston had two key catches on third downs in the second half and the Saints defense sacked Troy Aikman 5 times in the 4th qtr. Emmit Smith and his massive offensive line was limited and even dominated at times by Gregg Williams inspired defense. The Saints defense clearly took cheap shots with a malicious intent all game, but no Cowboy was injured. Sean Payton smirked under his visor when asked about the alleged bounties and said he only worries about the offense.

Terry Bradshaw hit John Stallworth for a 58 yard TD strike to cap an impressive opening drive, and the 75 Steelers never looked back as they dominated the 00 Ravens on all sides of the ball.
The Steel Curtain forced 5 turnovers and sacked Trent Dilfer 9 times in showing why they led the Steelers to 4 SB titles during the 70's. The Ray Lewis led Ravens were on the field too long and were handed bad field position all day, but Terry Bradshaw had a good day behind center as he carried the offense in the first half by leading the Steelers to 4 TD's. The Ravens appeared shocked after giving up an opening drive touchdown (first time all year), and they never got the momentum back. However, when they did, Trent Dilfer let them down with 2 interceptions, 1 fumble and 2 Jamal Lewis fumbles.
There is concern for Chuck Noll's Steelers, Franco Harris left the game with a serious concussion the the second qtr after a Ray Lewis shot to the head.

The 'Greatest Show On Turf' functioned like a well oiled machine against Bill Parcell's 90 Giants as they won comfortably 31-24.
Marshall Faulk scored on a 38-yard screen pass during the middle of the 4th qtr to give the 01 Rams a 31-17 lead. The Giants scored a garbage time TD on the last play to make the game appear closer. Issac Bruce grabbed 6 catches for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns to cap a big day. The speed of Mike Martz's offense was overwhelming for the brute and quick Giants, led by defensive coordinator Bill Belichick. Lawrence Taylor recorded no sacks due to K.Warner's ability to get rid of the ball quickly with a fury of 3-step dropbacks.
A turning point in the game proved to be when Dave Meggett (scatback) fumbled a ball that was recovered by Leonard Little to the Giants 3 yard line. Az-Zahir Hakim converted the turnover into a TD to give the Rams a 21-7 lead in the second qtr.
AFC Divisional Playoffs XVIII
In a wild shootout with an explosive display of 38 4th qtr points, the 07 Patriots won in epic fashion. Wes Welker took a direct snap out of the shotgun formation to score the winning touchdown for 64 yards on the last play of the game.
The game appeared over when Terrell Davis gave the Broncos a 38-35 lead after a 10 yard rush with 50 seconds remaining. Down to their last play, Josh McDaniels dialed up the unexpected and hoped for a miracle. The miracle manifested when Wes Welker shot through the prevent defense at mach speed and went untouched for 64 yards to the endzone.
Mike Vrabel scored a much needed defensive TD in the 3rd qtr when Brady's offense didn't manage a first down. It was the only turnover of the game, and a very costly one for the Broncos when they had the momentum.
"We made one more play than they did", reflected Bill Belichick during the post game press conference. Asked why the Patriots couldn't contain Terrell Davis, Belichick stated that "we didn't tackle well".
The 38 points scored in the 4th qtr is a Super Tecmo playoff record.

Without Walter Payton, the 85 Bears relied on their juggernaut defense and a couple of unlikely heroes.
Matt Suhey kept the chains moving with key catches and runs which led to three Kevin Butler FG's. Suhey also scored the 85 Bears only TD of the game. It proved to be just enough points for the 85 Bears defense to protect. Ottis Wilson and Steve McMichael combined for 9 sacks as the legendary defense limited the high powered offense of the Saints the entire game.
Down 16-10 and down to his final drive, Drew Brees heroically marched the Saints deep into 85 Bears territory with an assortment of quick strikes to all of his WR's. At the 85 Bears 27-yard line, Steve McMichael put an end to the 09 Saints upset bid with a ferocious sack to end the game. After the final play, the cameras caught defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan hugging Mike Ditka on the sidelines. The 85 Bears are still uncertain about Walter Payton's health. He'll be needed if the Bears wish to win it all against a talented field of teams that stand in their way.
Wow, any video of that last play in the NE game?
No videos, that would require a lot more work - more than I am willing to do - especially while I am trying to focus on my beer drinking.
AFC Divisional Playoffs XVIII
On an ice-windy day at Three Rivers Stadium, the 76 Raiders defense stifled the team of the decade of the 70's in a hard hitting 13-0 victory.
With an injured Franco Harris watching from the sidelines, the great Raiders-Steelers rivalry wasn't the same.
The Steelers fumbled the ball away 3 times, one for a score that Willie Brown picked up after a devastating Jack Tatum hit on Lynn Swann. The Raiders converted all 3 turnovers into 13 points. With blistering winds, both QB's hard a hard time against the weather conditions and the opposing defenses. Both teams didn't manage much offense on a day that was ruled by a hammering defense by both sides. The Raiders thugish secondary was the difference as they forced 3 fumbles and blanketed Swann and Stallworth all day with man-to-man coverage.
After the game, Al Davis accused the Steelers and Pete Rozelle of watering down the turf before the game to create a sleet playing surface to slow down the speedy Cliff Branch. Pete Rozelle fined Al Davis an undisclosed amount for the derogatory remarks.
NFC Divisional Playoffs XVIII
Down 31-28 with 3:04 remaining from the 89 49ers own two-yard line, Joe Cool demonstrated why he is considered the best QB ever - he calmly led his team on a game winning 98-yard touchdown drive to defeat the 01 Rams 35-28.
With just over a minute to go, Joe Montana beat the blitz when he found a streaking John Taylor down the sidelines for a 47-yard touchdown pass. The 'greatest show on turf' ran out of time at midfield on their ensuing possession.
The game was a brilliant back-and-forth offensive display of speed and precision from both high powered offenses. Many experts projected that the team with the ball last, would win. The Rams had too little time to cover 82 yards on their last possession, especially with Ronnie Lott lurking deep in "centerfield" in the 49ers prevent defense.
Asked if this was still Bill Walsh's team, George Seifert smiled and stated that the team of the 80's is a team of leaders and winners.
The 89 49ers will face the 85 Bears in a highly anticipated NFC Championship.

Willie Brown returned an errant Tom Brady pass for an interception touchdown return during the third qtr to give the 76 Raiders a 21-3 lead. It was his second defensive TD of the playoffs as John Madden's historical team held on to win 21-10 over the 07 Patriots.
The story of the day was the Raiders swarming pass rush and feared secondary. Tom Brady never really got into a rhythm during the game, seemingly hurried on every pass play. When he did have time to get the ball off, the vicious hits by the Raiders legendary secondary set the tone for the game as the Patriot WR's played with short arms all game.
The 76 Raiders got enough production from their running and passing game to score a pair of touchdowns behind one of the best offensive lines ever in the game.
The 76 Raiders will make their 5th appearance in TSB XVIII and will be seeking their third Lombardi.
NFC Championship XVIII
Down 19-17 with 1:18 left in the game, Joe Montana drove the 89 49ers into field goal position as Mike Cofer nailed a 41-yard game winning field goal in the last seconds of the game. The drive was all Roger Craig and Jerry Rice with two big pass completions from Montana.
The 89 49ers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Charles Haley returned a Walter Payton fumble for a touchdown. The Bears then added a FG and a safety to cut the lead in the first quarter, but then John Taylor scored on a touchdown pass in the second quarter to put the 49ers up 14-5 going into halftime.
The Bears ferocious legendary defense got stingy in the second half as they sacked Montana 5 times and forced a fumble that led to 7 points after Walter Payton scored through the ground. Jim McMahon then got hot and hit a series of passes on a 80-yard scoring drive to give the 85 Bears a 19-14 lead. After a 49ers punt, Jim McMahon was intercepted by Ronnie Lott in 49ers territory. The 49ers converted that into 3 points after a 3-and-out. The 49ers defense then stepped up and forced a punt under the two-minute mark, and Montana had enough time with the clock and in the pocket to deliver some clutch passes on the game winning drive.
The 89 49ers will face their crosstown rivals, the 76 Raiders in SB XVIII, for supremacy in the Bay Area.

Super Tecmo Bowl XVIII
The 76 Raiders won the coin toss at the end of regulation and Fred Biletnikoff caught a clutch 43 yard pass from Kenny 'the snake' Stabler to set up the game winning 24-yard field goal in the first ever overtime in Tecmo Super Bowl history. The 76 Raiders have now won their third Tecmo Super Bowl while the 89 49ers have lost their fifth Tecmo Super Bowl as well as losing back-to-back TSB's.
With 37 seconds remaining, Brent Jones caught a 28-yard strike from Joe Montana to even up the contest 17-17. That would be the last time Montana ever saw the ball as the Raiders scored on their first drive in the old sudden death format OT. Earlier in the game, Joe Montana's Niners had a chance to take a commanding 17-7 lead in the first half, but Jack Tatum violently hit John Taylor in the endzone, thus causing the ball to disengage and land in George Atkinson's hands for the game's only turnover - costly turnover.
Fred Biletnikoff was named the TSB XVIII MVP. The wily vet caught 7 passes for 185 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
John Madden thanked Al Davis for scripting a gameplan featuring classic man-to-man coverage with a safety lurking in a cover 1 scheme and the SS underneath to take away the quick timing passes by Montana. The greatest QB of all-time has yet to win a TSB and is now 0-5 in the Tecmo Super Bowl.

One of the most explosive and exciting offenses to ever set foot on an NFL field came up short once again in the playoffs. Air Coryell's offense amassed 461 yards of offense, but their defense couldn't make a stop against John Elway's 98 Broncos.
John Elway enjoyed an efficient day through the air and Terrell Davis gashed the porous Charger defense. Ed McCaffrey exploited single coverage with 101 yards receiving on 4 catches, three of which were touchdowns.
The difference in this shootout was a Chuck Muncie fumble in the first half and a recovered onside kick by the Broncos in the final minutes to put the game away. The Broncos scored on every possession in the game and that fact reminds us that no matter how exciting and deadly Dan Fouts and his offense are, it's hard to win big games in this big of a stage without a defense who can at least make 2-3 stops in this Tecmo League.

Fred Barnett caught a touchdown strike from QB Eagles with 1:10 remaining to give the 90 Eagles a 33-31 lead. Normally that is good enough for the vaunted Eagles defense to hold, but Joe Montana once again produced magic to Buddy Ryan's dismay.
Starting from their own 14 yard line with 52 seconds remaining, Joe Montana found Jerry Rice over the middle for a 71 yard gain that set up Mike Cofer's game winning 30-yard field goal. The greatest wide receiver of all time caught a slant and made some nifty moves to make Eric Allen and Wes Hopkins miss. He was finally hauled down at the Eagles 13. Buddy Ryan was caught on camera violently throwing a chair and breaking it to pieces on the ground.
The game was a back-and-forth affair with both teams exchanging leads all day. The difference in the game was a Ronnie Lott interception late in the game with the Eagles holding a 26-24 lead. The 90 Eagles got to midfield and were marching to put the game away, but the under-appreciated 89 49ers defense reminded people of how good they were by getting pressure on the elusive QB Eagles and causing him to make a mistake pass that Ronnie Lott was sitting on.

Okay, I'll tweak the rom and see to it that the 86 Bears are in next tournament.
Tomczack, Fuller and Flutie combined for 10 starts. McMahon started only 6 games. Things could have been different with a healthy McMahon in the playoffs, rather than the little Flutie. Also, the loss of Dennis McKinnon for the season did not help out the offense. It was just one of those years that could have been, but wasn't. The Bears missed out on a 2-year dominant dynasty.

He was 6-0 despite all that. That body slam he took in that Packers game turned out to be the difference for that year since that game in week 12 was his last appearance. I know how the "what could have beens" feel - the 49ers could have easily won 2 more SB's with Montana. The 87 upset to the Vikings was a shocker, and of course Montana going down against the Giants in the NFC title game.
With all the media hype nowadays would you image what a shitstorm that slam and the guy's "hit list" would be in 2013? He would have never played a football game again...
...nor should he have, that FUCK

Very true! In addition with all the protection rules of QBs, that guy who body slammed McMahon would have easily been suspended for the rest of the season and the next with a possible fine of 200 thousand dollars. Who knows, being banned is not out of the question.
AFC Wild Card XIX
The 72 Dolphins perfect season came to a brutal end against the 2000 Ravens. The Ravens were well suited for a 1970's style of game where power running attacks and dominant physical defenses ruled the era.
Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens punishing defense shut down Don Shula's offense. The Ravens only surrendered 37 yards on the ground to one of the NFL's best running attacks ever. Bob Greise was sacked 6 times and intercepted twice.
Dilfer enjoyed an efficient day and made some big throws to Shannon Sharpe. The No-Name Defense of the Dolphins played extremely well and did not give up a TD, but were the victims of a couple of big passes by Dilfer to Sharpe. The Ravens kicked three field goals and recorded a safety, and that was more than enough for one of the best defenses of all time. The 2000 Ravens hold the record for least amount of points given up in a season (165 points (10.3/g)).
Asked if the 2000 Ravens were better than the Steel Curtain, Don Shula responded diplomatically:"It's hard to say who is better right now".
Fuck yeah 72 Dolphins, eat it
NFC Wild Card XIX
The overall speed of the 90 Giants was explosively overwhelming and shocking to the 1953 Lions as Bill Parcells 1990 Giants demolished the 1953 champions of the NFL by a very lopsided score of 42-0.
Lawrence Taylor recorded 7 sacks and the blatantly faster Giants defense dominated the Lions simplistic offense in every conceivable way. Bobby Layne told the media that he would have never imagined that a defense from the 90s could evolve to be so sophisticated and fast compared to what he saw in the 1950s. Layne also marveled at the way Dave Meggett was used out of the backfield in what he termed as "futuristic spaceship" formations.
AFC Divisional Playoffs XIX
An old bitter rivalry between the Raiders and Broncos was renewed at Mile High Stadium.
To everybody's surprise, the highly anticipated game was a yawning blowout.
Terrell Davis was injured on the Broncos opening series and the devastating loss of "TD" sucked the life out of the 98 Broncos.
The 76 Raiders defense forced 4 fumbles and harassed John Elway all day. On offense, Kenny "the snake" Stabler produced an efficient and mistake free day.
The Broncos were a drastically different team with backup Derek Loville substituting poorly as running back, and that allowed the violent Raiders defense to focus on John Elway and his passing game.

Two historic dynasties clashed at Candlestick Park to book a trip to the NFC Championship game.
Down 10-3 in the third quarter, Joe Montana found his rhythm and engineered three scoring drives in a 20 point furry. From there, the 89 49ers defense did the rest as they shut down Emmit Smith and limited Troy Aikman. The 92 Cowboys also hurt themselves with a crucial fumble in the third quarter that led to a 49er field goal to put the 49ers up 23-10. The Cowboys were unable to mount a comeback, especially with Charles Haley constantly applying pressure and Ronnie Lott breaking up many passes.
Owner Eddie Debartolo took an opportunity to ridicule Jimmy Johnson's brash words from the 1992 NFC Championship game where he arrogantly predicted an easy victory for the Cowboys and his post game smug remark. "How do you like them Cowboys now", stated Debartolo to the media with a wink.
Raiders vs 49ers, someone is cooking their home teams stats
AFC Divisional Playoffs XIX
The playoff game between the record setting offense of the 2007 Patriots (589 points, 36.8/g) and the record setting 2000 Ravens defense (165 points, 10.3/g) turned out to be a thriller.
With a 3-0 lead in the 4th quarter and after pitching a shutout for 7 straight quarters, it appeared unlikely that Tom Brady would figure out one of the best defenses of all time.
Brady connected with Donte Stallworth to give the 07 Patriots a 7-3 lead with 1:57 remaining in the highly anticipated game. Dilfer failed to answer with 4 straight incompletions. The Patriots took over on downs at the Ravens 18 yardline and scored on another touchdown reception by Stallworth to put the game away.
The 2007 Patriots will now take their perfect 17-game winning streak to Oakland for the AFC Championship. Madden vs Belichick, that should give the media plenty to write about.
NFC Divisional Playoffs XIX
In an exciting thriller between the 2009 Saints and the 1990 Giants, Tracy Porter intercepted Phil Simms in the endzone on the game's last play to preserve a 30-28 win for the 09 Saints.
The first half was a shootout with both teams going up and down the field and exchanging leads. The second half turned into a defensive battle with no points scored in the fourth quarter.
Drew Brees found a wide open Robert Meachem in the final seconds of the third quarter. The touchdown strike gave the 09 Saints a 30-28 lead that would turn out to be barely enough.
Bill Parcells mysteriously elected to go for the touchdown rather than kick an easy chip shot field goal for the win on the 90 Giants final drive when they found themselves at the 09 Saints 3 yardline. Bill Parcells did not answer questions to the media, so his bizarre decision remains a mystery.

AFC Championship XIX
The 2007 Patriots kept their season perfect with a convincing 34-17 win over the defending TSB Champions 76 Raiders.
Trailing 2017, John Madden's 76 Raiders failed to get any offense going in the 4th quarter. Meanwhile the record setting offense of the 07 Patriots found their rhythm and scored 14 unanswered points. Tom Brady's precision passes and the speed of Randy Moss was too much for the violent Raiders defense.
The 07 Patriots will now try and become the first 19-0 team ever in the Tecmo Super Bowl XIX.
