XIII Playoffs NFC Divisional Playoffs

89 49ers 0
85 Bears 27

Buddy Ryan's 46 defense recorded their second straight shutout in the Tecmo Playoffs. A feat that has never been accomplished in the history of the Tecmo Playoffs.

The 85 Bears outgained the 89 49ers 438 to 118 in a display of dominance.

Filling in for an injured Walter Payton, Thomas Sanders rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Dennis Mckinnon torched the Niners secondary with 173 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Jim McMahon, the fiery and emotional  leader of the 85 Bears offense, played brilliantly as he completed 70 percent of his passes for 300 yards.

Joe Montana, who was limited to 63 yards passing and is considered by many as the best QB ever, is denied once again in a bid for his first Tecmo SB. Montana is 0-5 against the 85 Bears lifetime in Tecmo.

sprts century had a show on mcmahon yesterday.  seems many blame him for the bears not winning a 2nd superbowl.

partially for being repeatedly injured and also for not embracing/taking doug flutie in and helping him progress better during the 87 season.

I think Ditka's conservative approach on offense was a huge factor to holding back the Bears after 85. Also, him yelling at Jim Harbaugh and going apeshit on him all the time cause he made audibles at the line did not help either.
Ditka ran the offense, and was very uncreative a lot. He allowed very little audibles and loved to run the ball on 3rd and anything...But agreed on McMahon being injured to much...part of the reason.

back to the playoffs....

XIII Playoffs AFC Divisional Playoffs

72 Dolphins 17
76 Raiders 14

Bob Griese hit Howard Tilley on a 54 yard touchdown strike with under two minutes to play for the game winning touchdown. On the ensuing drive, the Raiders turned the ball over on downs and ending their bid for a 3rd Tecmo Bowl title.

Bob Griese came alive in the second half and registered most of his passing yards in the second half.

The Raiders took a 14-10 lead at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but their defense failed to stop Griese and company. The No Name Defense shut down the explosive Raiders offense and won the battle in the trenches against the Raiders vaunted offensive line which features 3 HOF. Manny Fernandez disrupted the Raiders plays for what seemed like on almost every play.

Don Shula, who is very protective of his perfect season record, stated that going undefeated while beating the Raiders makes this playoff run that much more satisfying.

This is BS.  Payton threw the ball as much as Tomlinson does now.  Including passed to McMahon.  He put Perry in the backfield, sure they ran a lot, but the had the best RB probably ever.

He stole that idea from Bill Walsh when Walsh put Bubba Paris in the backfield in the NFC Championship game in 84...it was to make a statement and ridicule Ditka for his over zealous approach to smash mouth football and playing real football. Ditka claimed that the Niners did not play real football with Walsh's offensive approach.

Sweetness did make some nice throws and was one of the best ever, but my post still stands. Ditka was a stubborn idiot on offense. Drop your ego Ultimate. Truth is truth. I used to hate watching the Bears on offense.

Payton was stopped a lot, due to teams crowding the box and not worrying about Ditka getting creative or doing anything out of the ordinary. Ditka should have taken more pages from Landry back when he was Landry's puppet with the Cowboys.

XIII NFC Divisional Playoffs

82 Redskins 7
73 Vikings 24

In sub zero temperatures at Metropolitan Stadium, the Purple People Eaters manhandled the Hogs in the trenches. The 73 Vikings held the 82 Redskins to 93 total yards,  two first downs, and scored 2 defensive touchdowns as Bud Grant's Vikings of the 70's move on to the NFC Championship in a much anticipated defensive battle against the 85 Bears.

Safety Paul Krause and defensive lineman Alan Page (HOF) each recored defensive touchdowns. Joe Theisman was suffocated all day by the relentless pressure of one of the best defensive lines ever to step on the filed. John the Diesel Riggins was knocked out of the game on the Redskins opening drive.

Offensively, the 73 Vikings did enough to move the chains and eat up time. Fran Tarkenton's scrambles and improvisational skills extended many drives and kept the Purple People Eaters fresh for Joe Gibb's much celebrated Hogs.

XIII AFC Championship

75 Steelers 24
72 Dolphins 38

Two juggernauts of the 70's clashed in a highly anticipated game at a sold out Orange Bowl. The perfect season of the 72 Dolphins lives on for one more game.

Bob Griese and Paul Warfield took the Steel Curtain secondary apart as they connected for three scores.

Don Shula's brilliant game plan called for 3 step drop backs to avoid the furious pass rush of the Steel Curtain. Bob Griese made great pre-snap reads all day as he rolled up 303 yards passing.

Paul Warfield put the game out of reach with a 48 yard td reception making the game 38-24. Griese was sacked only once and had great protection by his offensive line.

John Stallworth provided most of the offense against the under appreciated No Name Defense by catching 4 passes for 145 yards and three scores. The No Name Defense loaded the box to stop Franco Harris and Rocky Bleir as well as double teaming the acrobatic Lynn Swann all day. The game plan worked and Don Shula will now move on to his second Tecmo Super Bowl in search of his first championship.

XIII NFC Championship

85 Bears 28
73 Vikings 10

The 85 Bears were angry even in victory. They finally gave up points after 13 quarters of allowing no points which is a Tecmo record.

William Perry bull charged all day through a seemingly paper wall which was the Vikings offensive line and registered 7 sacks and had a handful of tackles behind the line of scrimmage on running plays. Lezlie Frazier intercepted a Tarkenton pass and took it to the house. The 46 defense appears to be unstoppable right now commented Vikings coach Bud Grant.

On offense, Jim McMahon led the offense with some big passes and scrambles. Willie Gault showed off his world class speed on a 63 yard touch down pass.

The 85 Bears will now go for a Tecmo record 4th Super Bowl championship as they look to end the 72 Dolphins undefeated season.

Tecmo Super Bowl XIII

85 Bears 21
72 Dolphins 10

In a game watched by 120 million viewers according to the Nielson ratings, Tecmo juggernaut 85 Bears relied on their trademark stingy defense to ruin the 72 Dolphins perfect season in TSB XIII.

Despite turning the ball over 5 times, the 72 Dolphins No Name defense kept the game from being a blowout by limiting Walter Payton and playing tough pass defense.

However, the 46 defense was that much better. The 85 Bears hit hard all day and shut down the Dolphins powerful running game and caused 5 turnovers, two of which in their redzone. Gary Fencik intercepted a Griese pass in the 4th quarter to protect a 14-10 lead.

On offense for the Bears, Willie Gault caught a couple of big passes and scored the game securing touchdown late in the 4th quarter to make the score 21-10 and that's how it stayed.

The 85 Bears captured their 4th TSB Lombardi trophy and their 3rd in the last 5 Tecmo seasons which has created a lot of dynasty talk.

Mike Ditka's also became the winingest coach in Tecmo and was quoted as saying " it's simple, we hit the snaught out of people and run the ball to win". Jim McMahon who once again wore his trademark headband with Rozelle written on it said Ditka needs to let him pass more so we can dominate more.

Mike Singletary was named TSB XIII MVP. He recovered 3 fumbles, caused 2 fumbles, and had 5 sacks.

XIV Divisional Playoffs

The 68 Jets challenged Frank Ryan to beat them through the air as they stuffed the box and designed their game plan to stop Jim Brown. The 64 Browns met the challenge as Frank Ryan and Paul Warfield torched the 68 Jets secondary on an unusual warm day at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Jim Brown only carried the ball 6 times for 22 yards as he was primarily used as a decoy.

Joe Namath failed to keep up with the Browns offense as many of his drives ended up short. The 68 Browns defense played a superb zone and kept Namath and the Jets out of the endzone in the second half.

Jim Brown would have run right through an eight man front. This game is a farce

XIV NFC Divisional Playoffs

In a rematch of the NFC title game from season XIII, the 4 time TSB champion and defending champion 85 Bears converted 2 turnovers into 14 points as they once again beat the Vikings in a tight game at a frigid Soldier Field.

Walter Payton broke for 2 runs of 50 yards or more as he scored 2 touchdowns for the juggernaut 85 Bears. Mike Singletary recorded 5 sacks and harrassed Fran Tarkenton all day.

The celebrated 46 defense had an off day according to Buddy Ryan, " Nobody should ever score on us, this is why I should be head coach and not Ditka". Ditka did not comment on Buddy Ryan, but he did share his analysis of the game, "Smash mouth football always wins".

Look at that last screen shot.  There's a guy on the Vikings on the top of the 40 yard line and he looks like he's holding a guy in the air over his head. What the fuck kind of league is this?

XIV AFC Divisional Playoffs

The Steel Curtain simply imposed their will today over Johny Unitas and the 58 Colts as they set a TSB record 16 sacks and only allowed 63 total yards to accompany their dominating shutout.

Terry Bradshaw showcased his rifle arm, Franco Harris rushed for 103 yards and Lynn Swann made 3 acrobatic catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns as they shined on offense. Rocky Bleier received a standing ovation as he took the field in his first game back from rehabbing his injured thigh in which he suffered a brutal injury from his service in Vietnam.

On the Colts first series, Unitas was sacked three consecutive times which resulted in a safety. Tony Dungy, a Steeler defensive back for the Steelers and former coach of the Colts, did not suit up for the game.

The team of the 70's appear to have that look of a champion once again.

NFC Divisional Playoffs

Steve Barkowski and the underdog 80 Falcons pulled off a shocking upset over Bill Parcells Giants at the Medowlands.

Down 21-17 with 21 seconds left at the 2 yard line, William Andrews rushed for the game winning touchdown. The drive was set up by a 47 yard pass reception by Wallace Francis who outleaped Everson Walls for the ball.

Defensive coordinator Bill Belichick had no answers for William Andrews and Wallace Francis as they both torched the Giants typical stingy defense led by Lawrence Taylor who looked flat today.

AFC Divisional Playoffs

The 76 Raiders used a suffocating defense and big plays on offense to easily win over the 64 Browns.

George Atkinson and Jack Tatum played on the fringe of what was legal football as they took out 2 starting receivers in the first half with malicious and vicious hits on any receiver that came into their area, including Jim Brown who was knocked out of the game in the 1st quarter on a swing pass.

Kenny 'the snake' Stabler had an efficient day and connected with Cliff Branch deep on 4 different long strikes. Cliff Branch ended the day with 4 reception for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Legendary coach John Madden credited maverick owner Al Davis for signing players who the league thought was washed up.

Footballs winningest team of the 60's, 70's, and 80's appear poised to make a run at their third TSB trophy.
