AFC Divisional Playoffs XVIII

On an ice-windy day at Three Rivers Stadium, the 76 Raiders defense stifled the team of the decade of the 70's in a hard hitting 13-0 victory.

With an injured Franco Harris watching from the sidelines, the great Raiders-Steelers rivalry wasn't the same.

The Steelers fumbled the ball away 3 times, one for a score that Willie Brown picked up after a devastating Jack Tatum hit on Lynn Swann. The Raiders converted all 3 turnovers into 13 points. With blistering winds, both QB's hard a hard time against the weather conditions and the opposing defenses. Both teams didn't manage much offense on a day that was ruled by a hammering defense by both sides. The Raiders thugish secondary was the difference as they forced 3 fumbles and blanketed Swann and Stallworth all day with man-to-man coverage.

After the game, Al Davis accused the Steelers and Pete Rozelle of watering down the turf before the game to create a sleet playing surface to slow down the speedy Cliff Branch. Pete Rozelle fined Al Davis an undisclosed amount for the derogatory remarks.

NFC Divisional Playoffs XVIII

Down 31-28 with 3:04 remaining from the 89 49ers own two-yard line, Joe Cool demonstrated why he is considered the best QB ever - he calmly led his team on a game winning 98-yard touchdown drive to defeat the 01 Rams 35-28.

With just over a minute to go, Joe Montana beat the blitz when he found a streaking John Taylor down the sidelines for a 47-yard touchdown pass. The 'greatest show on turf' ran out of time at midfield on their ensuing possession.

The game was a brilliant back-and-forth offensive display of speed and precision from both high powered offenses. Many experts projected that the team with the ball last, would win. The Rams had too little time to cover 82 yards on their last possession, especially with Ronnie Lott lurking deep in "centerfield" in the 49ers prevent defense.

Asked if this was still Bill Walsh's team, George Seifert smiled and stated that the team of the 80's is a team of leaders and winners.

The 89 49ers will face the 85 Bears in a highly anticipated NFC Championship.

AFC Championship XVIII

Willie Brown returned an errant Tom Brady pass for an interception touchdown return during the third qtr to give the 76 Raiders a 21-3 lead. It was his second defensive TD of the playoffs as John Madden's historical team held on to win 21-10 over the 07 Patriots.

The story of the day was the Raiders swarming pass rush and feared secondary. Tom Brady never really got into a rhythm during the game, seemingly hurried on every pass play. When he did have time to get the ball off, the vicious hits by the Raiders legendary secondary set the tone for the game as the Patriot WR's played with short arms all game.

The 76 Raiders got enough production from their running and passing game to score a pair of touchdowns behind one of the best offensive lines ever in the game.

The 76 Raiders will make their 5th appearance in TSB XVIII and will be seeking their third Lombardi.

NFC Championship XVIII

Down 19-17 with 1:18 left in the game, Joe Montana drove the 89 49ers into field goal position as Mike Cofer nailed a 41-yard game winning field goal in the last seconds of the game. The drive was all Roger Craig and Jerry Rice with two big pass completions from Montana.

The 89 49ers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Charles Haley returned a Walter Payton fumble for a touchdown. The Bears then added a FG and a safety to cut the lead in the first quarter, but then John Taylor scored on a touchdown pass in the second quarter to put the 49ers up 14-5 going into halftime.

The Bears ferocious legendary defense got stingy in the second half as they sacked Montana 5 times and forced a fumble that led to 7 points after Walter Payton scored through the ground. Jim McMahon then got hot and hit a series of passes on a 80-yard scoring drive to give the 85 Bears a 19-14 lead. After a 49ers punt, Jim McMahon was intercepted by Ronnie Lott in 49ers territory. The 49ers converted that into 3 points after a 3-and-out. The 49ers defense then stepped up and forced a punt under the two-minute mark, and Montana had enough time with the clock and in the pocket to deliver some clutch passes on the game winning drive.

The 89 49ers will face their crosstown rivals, the 76 Raiders in SB XVIII, for supremacy in the Bay Area.

Super Tecmo Bowl XVIII

The 76 Raiders won the coin toss at the end of regulation and Fred Biletnikoff caught a clutch 43 yard pass from Kenny 'the snake' Stabler to set up the game winning 24-yard field goal in the first ever overtime in Tecmo Super Bowl history. The 76 Raiders have now won their third Tecmo Super Bowl while the 89 49ers have lost their fifth Tecmo Super Bowl as well as losing back-to-back TSB's.

With 37 seconds remaining, Brent Jones caught a 28-yard strike from Joe Montana to even up the contest 17-17. That would be the last time Montana ever saw the ball as the Raiders scored on their first drive in the old sudden death format OT. Earlier in the game, Joe Montana's Niners had a chance to take a commanding 17-7 lead in the first half, but Jack Tatum violently hit John Taylor in the endzone, thus causing the ball to disengage and land in George Atkinson's hands for the game's only turnover - costly turnover.

Fred Biletnikoff was named the TSB XVIII MVP. The wily vet caught 7 passes for 185 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

John Madden thanked Al Davis for scripting a gameplan featuring classic man-to-man coverage with a safety lurking in a cover 1 scheme and the SS underneath to take away the quick timing passes by Montana. The greatest QB of all-time has yet to win a TSB and is now 0-5 in the Tecmo Super Bowl.

AFC Wildcard XIX

One of the most explosive and exciting offenses to ever set foot on an NFL field came up short once again in the playoffs. Air Coryell's offense amassed 461 yards of offense, but their defense couldn't make a stop against John Elway's 98 Broncos.

John Elway enjoyed an efficient day through the air and Terrell Davis gashed the porous Charger defense. Ed McCaffrey exploited single coverage with 101 yards receiving on 4 catches, three of which were touchdowns.

The difference in this shootout was a Chuck Muncie fumble in the first half and a recovered onside kick by the Broncos in the final minutes to put the game away. The Broncos scored on every possession in the game and that fact reminds us that no matter how exciting and deadly Dan Fouts and his offense are, it's hard to win big games in this big of a stage without a defense who can at least make 2-3 stops in this Tecmo League.

NFC Wildcard XIX

Fred Barnett caught a touchdown strike from QB Eagles with 1:10 remaining to give the 90 Eagles a 33-31 lead. Normally that is good enough for the vaunted Eagles defense to hold, but Joe Montana once again produced magic to Buddy Ryan's dismay.

Starting from their own 14 yard line with 52 seconds remaining, Joe Montana found Jerry Rice over the middle for a 71 yard gain that set up Mike Cofer's game winning 30-yard field goal. The greatest wide receiver of all time caught a slant and made some nifty moves to make Eric Allen and Wes Hopkins miss. He was finally hauled down at the Eagles 13. Buddy Ryan was caught on camera violently throwing a chair and breaking it to pieces on the ground.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with both teams exchanging leads all day. The difference in the game was a Ronnie Lott interception late in the game with the Eagles holding a 26-24 lead. The 90 Eagles got to midfield and were marching to put the game away, but the under-appreciated 89 49ers defense reminded people of how good they were by getting pressure on the elusive QB Eagles and causing him to make a mistake pass that Ronnie Lott was sitting on.

I would like to see the 86 Bears in a season, were it not for some injuries or a halfway decent backup QB they could have been as good at 85.

Okay, I'll tweak the rom and see to it that the 86 Bears are in next tournament.

Tomczack, Fuller and Flutie combined for 10 starts. McMahon started only 6 games. Things could have been different with a healthy McMahon in the playoffs, rather than the little Flutie. Also, the loss of Dennis McKinnon for the season did not help out the offense. It was just one of those years that could have been, but wasn't. The Bears missed out on a 2-year dominant dynasty.

85 Bears (15-1):
Scored 456 points (28.5/g), 2nd of 28 in the NFL.
Allowed 198 points (12.4/g), 1st.
Differential of 258 points (16.1/g), 1st.

86 Bears (14-2):
Scored 352 points (22.0/g), 13th of 28 in the NFL.
Allowed 187 points (11.7/g), 1st.
Differential of 165 points (10.3/g), 1st.

The fact they won 14 games with those fkn guys at QB was a miracle in itself.  And wiki says Mcmahon was out of shape and played like complete shit when he was in there.  What could have been...

He was 6-0 despite all that. That body slam he took in that Packers game turned out to be the difference for that year since that game in week 12 was his last appearance. I know how the "what could have beens" feel - the 49ers could have easily won 2 more SB's with Montana. The 87 upset to the Vikings was a shocker, and of course Montana going down against the Giants in the NFC title game.

With all the media hype nowadays would you image what a shitstorm that slam and the guy's "hit list" would be in 2013?  He would have never played a football game again...

Very true! In addition with all the protection rules of QBs, that guy who body slammed McMahon would have easily been suspended for the rest of the season and the next with a possible fine of 200 thousand dollars. Who knows, being banned is not out of the question.

AFC Wild Card XIX

The 72 Dolphins perfect season came to a brutal end against the 2000 Ravens. The Ravens were well suited for a 1970's style of game where power running attacks and dominant physical defenses ruled the era.

Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens punishing defense shut down Don Shula's offense. The Ravens only surrendered 37 yards on the ground to one of the NFL's best running attacks ever. Bob Greise was sacked 6 times and intercepted twice.

Dilfer enjoyed an efficient day and made some big throws to Shannon Sharpe. The No-Name Defense of the Dolphins played extremely well and did not give up a TD, but were the victims of a couple of big passes by Dilfer to Sharpe. The Ravens kicked three field goals and recorded a safety, and that was more than enough for one of the best defenses of all time. The 2000 Ravens hold the record for least amount of points given up in a season (165 points (10.3/g)).

Asked if the 2000 Ravens were better than the Steel Curtain, Don Shula responded diplomatically:"It's hard to say who is better right now".

The overall speed of the 90 Giants was explosively overwhelming and shocking to the 1953 Lions as Bill Parcells 1990 Giants demolished the 1953 champions of the NFL by a very lopsided score of 42-0.

Lawrence Taylor recorded 7 sacks and the blatantly faster Giants defense dominated the Lions simplistic offense in every conceivable way. Bobby Layne told the media that he would have never imagined that a defense from the 90s could evolve to be so sophisticated and fast compared to what he saw in the 1950s. Layne also marveled at the way Dave Meggett was used out of the backfield in what he termed as "futuristic spaceship" formations.
