Ex-Tigers ace says Palmeiro has 'lost all credibility'

Jack Morris was known as a player who gave his all, a pitcher with a rubber arm.

It's no surprise then that the retired pitcher, the most-winning pitcher of the 1980s, has harsh words for those who have chosen to take steroids in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Asked if he would enter the Hall of Fame if a player known to have used steroids was inducted as well, Morris told the St. Paul Pioneer Press he would rather stay out.

"I don't want to be in," Morris said. "That's a bold statement, and a lot of people are going to say, 'Well, how dare him even say that.' I don't care. It's my life. I can say what I feel, and I don't believe in cheating."

As for players who have faced allegations of steroid use, such as Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro?

"They're all cheaters in my opinion," Morris told the newspaper.

Morris, who spent 14 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, also called Rafael Palmeiro a "liar."

"I think he's lost all credibility, and one of the credentials for the Hall of Fame is integrity, credibility and character," Morris told the Press. "You tell me what that says about Rafael. ... I played the game with my heart. I focused on winning. That's all that I cared about. I didn't care whether I got you a good story or not."

Morris, who has been on the Hall of Fame ballot for the past six years, collected three World Series rings. He finished his 18-year career 254-186, with a 3.90 ERA.

Today's story about Jack Morris being unfriendly:

Dads understand and appreciate help given to their children. So Pat Mahomes told Smith several times last year how much he appreciated what he did for his boy. Unspoken was the fact that they both knew Patrick was there to take Smith's job.

"That's what's so admirable about what Alex did all season for him," Pat Mahomes said. "I know how it was when I came up [to the Minnesota Twins, in 1992]. I remember one time that year asking Jack Morris how he threw his split-finger fastball. He said, 'Get away from me, you little MF. You'll be trying to take my job next year.' "

For what it's worth, that almost certainly didn't happen in 1992, because Morris was with the Jays that year - I assume it was in Spring Training or some other engagement with minor leaguers in '91, before Mahomes made his big-league debut (the "1992" was added by Peter King, not from Mahomes' original quote).
