Okay, this may be the most morbid forum topic ever; if it bothers you, go read something else.  This idea struck me today after the recent passing of perennial dead-pool favorite Bob Hope and the U.S. government's aborted plan to sell "terrorism futures" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3106559.stm).

Here's my topic: In a dead pool consisting of RBI players, who would you pick first?  Donnie Moore is out, of course, as are any others that I've forgotten about.  Darryl Strawberry, with his history of drug abuse and cancer, is too easy, so we'll disregard him, too.  Do you go for age (Reggie Jackson)?  History of violent behavior (Jose Canseco)?  Illegal drug use (the Mets)?  General insanity (Kevin Mitchell)?  Likelihood of assassination (Bill Buckner)?  I'm really curious what you guys will come up with.

For the uninitiated: A "dead pool" is a wager placed on who will be the first to die in a give set of people.  In this thread, for example, we're guessing which RBI Baseball player will die first.

I think this really could go somewhere. I'm in.
You're going down, chainsaw.

Gantry

My money is on Mitchell, though some RBI'er is due for a DUI death...

doveRBI

Mike D.

I vote for Steve Olin....shiiiiiitttttt

GDavis

If we're doing this I want Straw....Come on, cancer, addictions....this guy doesn't have much time left.

Reds

If I could actually choose, I would WISH death upon Schiralldi...bastard has blown more games for me than any other player possibly could ever top...but I alos hate Puckett...I mean the SI article really told his sordid tale of sleazebag-iness....(yeah I just coined sleazebag-iness).  But the most likely to die first...give me Mike Scott...or *fingers crossed* Ozzie Smith...

They're still a bit too young; might have to wait till 2025 or so.  ;)

BeefMaster

Sorry, GDavis, I threw out Strawberry in the opening post on this thread, because he's too easy (for the reasons you mentioned).

I'd forgotten about Bobby Ojeda's brush with death.  Makes me leery of him, though - I worry that he could be one of those guys that's hard to kill and ends up living until 100 despite having no functioning limbs.  Lenny Dykstra drove drunk once and nearly killed a couple of his Phillies teammates back in the early 90's, so he's probably in the same boat.

I gotta say I like Canseco for this - I'm sure we're not far from the day when he and Ozzie (his twin brother) are found in a ditch after a bar fight.  Or maybe McGwire will hire a hit man to shut him up about the steroids.

Pedro Guerrero. Lots of drugs--probably living in a third world country. DEAD!

Gantry

And he has the IQ of a blender - Pedro is an excellent choice, he may end up blowing out his brains cleaning out his gun...

GDavis

I'll take Grich then.  He was already an old man when RBI was made.

Reds

What about Doyle?  That bastard was like 50 when RBI came out....he's gotta be in intensive care somewhere...

Since the RBI board is slow lately, reviving old posts may be a good idea.  I liked this one, I'm going with Don Sutton, he always seemed so old to me, plus it would continue the CA pitcher trend.

I predict that Tom Brookens will die during a mustache riding session with Larry "Don't call me Lawrence" Herndon.

That's a good call. If he's already dead, then you can't have him.
