2 somewhat unusual things

These happened last night when I was playing arcade version.

I hit a pop up with Kingman, it went higher than I remember seeing/hearing on any version.  Sound got to higher pitch than machine could handle and made a low buzzing sound for a second, then returned to very high pitch when ball got low enough.

Also I hit a pop up that the computer failed to field.  Hit to short left SS or 3B, I figured inning was about to be over and start looking at the TV.  Then I hear the guy from 3rd score, no bop obviously since arcade, but computer must have just misplayed pop up.

I had a weird thing happen, too.  I played the computer and hit the "time" button right away (to sub the leadoff hitter).  Pitcher disappeared--which is somewhat "normal," but he never reappeared.  Sometimes this happens and he's standing somewhere in between rubber and plate, but this time he wasn't there at all.  Pitches were made--but not seen.  Every 10 or so seconds, there'd be a "called" ball.  If my bat was sticking out, it'd be a "called" strike.  

But no pitcher and no actual ball thrown!

Did the pitcher appear once the ball was put into play?

It was impossible to put the ball in play because there was no ball to be put in play.  The only options were to have a called ball or to have a swing strike (swinging at the air).

I've had the "pitcher has disappeared" glitch happen to me before.  I think that he was simply behind the plate somewhere...thus all his pitches were probably thrown into the stands.  Just a theory.

Again yesterday I hit a towering pop up that stopped making a high pitched sound and made a buzzing sound instead.  Again it was with Kingman and in his first plate appearance (so he had the pinch hitter bonus).  His power total would have been 975+64=1039, which is the max for arcade or nes.  Has anyone else had this happen?

I had something similar happen with Joe Adcock.  It was also hit first at bat and he just crushed it to left.  We have the speaker disconnected, but it went way higher than any ball I ever saw.  The screen just kind of stayed in the highest position for awhile before the Home Run was awarded...

i believe for (some reason) that it was the astrodome.  although i don't think you should ask tommy lasorda what he thought of kingman's performance.

I was at a game once when Cecil Fielder hit a ball off the Metrodome roof; I believe it was in '93 or so.  Damn thing ended up being a run-scoring double that was the difference in the game.

i believe for (some reason) that it was the astrodome.  although i don't think you should ask tommy lasorda what he thought of kingman's performance.

I know it was when he was with the A's because I was watching an A's game when it happened on TV.  Thus it couldn't have been the astro dome.  Also kingman played only in the AL after 83.

I saw Tony Bautista, then of the DBacks, hit the roof with a pop-up.  That fucker was up there.  Had to have been a tough play, especially after the ricochet factor.

Both of mine were more or less straight up both came down just past the infield.  Adcock does fit the 975 + PH bonus criteria though, so could be similar.

The unusual thing about Kingman's wasn't just that it hit the roof, but that it got stuck in the roof and didn't come down!  I forget what they awarded him, but I remember some grounds keeper got the ball down the next day, giving it the longest hang time of any pop-up in baseball history.

I believe in the Metrodome, if a ball goes through the roof (there are vent holes up there) it's a ground-rule double.  I'd guess it'd be similar wherever Kingman was.

Some of this stuff sounds like my McGwire experience.
Pinch hit for Randolph and hit a big time pop up towards left-center that kept in the air as the screen panned to the seats- but it was still in the air long enough that the screen went back to behind the plate and resumed going towards left when it dropped in short left field.

That was years ago, so the details are fuzzy, but I clearly remember the ball making its round-the-world trip.
