in terms of owner talent, this is where the league is at in my estimation

1st tier: hou

2nd tier: det, nym, sf

3rd tier: stl

4th tier: bos, cal, min

Holy shit, the guy that lost 10-0 to Hou is 2nd tier?  Do the 4th tier players have eye sight?

Dude, I'm pretty sure Helen Keller could manage not to lose 10-0 to houston. As any team. Straight pitch.

Four of Houston's Five wins have come against 4th tier teams...

I'm putting myself in the 4th tier for losing 10-0.  So make it 5 out of 5.

do these other guys know the proper substitutes to make, and do they know to take some pitches to wear guys out?

as long as you can play defense (and somewhat know your way around the game), Bostom should dispose of houston even if the guy with boston isnt all that great.

Let's just say that The Express stole home on Minnesota because he didn't how to cover home.

Man, the one thing I miss about Octo was the fact that all the games we played had unwritten gentleman's rules.

Including if we started home and the catcher accidentally ran to second, we went back to third.

No reason to take advantage of easy mistakes, I guess, unless you're "just that good"

I didn't steal home in early games, figured it wouldn't be fair while my friends were learning.

That said, even after a few hundred games over the last year, I can usually beat out my friend in a rundown with a fast players, especially as he has trouble with the quick throw on such occasions (he can do them great on fly balls and line drives but not so well in a pickle) so I've definately started Vinny from third and taken advantage of bad throws, running to the wrong base, etc.

SUMMARY:

Don't pull that stuff on guys who can't play the game.

If they can't figure it out after a long time of intense playing though, it's their own damn fault

I think this is lame, a mistake is a mistake.  Do you not swing at mistake pitches?  Plus did Octo not know how to throw the ball to the pitcher and the throw back to the catcher?

I think you're lame.

I guess this goes back to the whole infield fly debate.

When we played, we both would begin to steal with every pitch thrown, and yeah, we did just instantly throw to the pitcher, but due to the frequency of steals, mistakes would occur every once in a while.

Just like when we'd try the Armas play, if the third baseman didn't reach first in time, we'd run the batter out.

Also, only one base on overthrows.

Polish Rifle

We play everything in this league.  If you overthrow, you go and get the ball.  No infield fly rule.  We just play the game it was meant and created to be played.

AlecTrevylan006

Dude, there is no way the game was MEANT to have Houston go 5-0 and Boston 0-5

In my opinion, none of it is lame--if both players agree.  I don't see anything wrong with Attez and Octo agreeing to and playing by the same set of rules.   However, I also don't see anything wrong with both players agreeing that the rule is that there are no rules.

The two things that I do see wrong with the above few posts, however, are as follows:

1)The mere fact that whomever played with Mn couldn't stop the steal of home because he didn't know how to is largely telling of his ability, and to a lesser extent, telling of the over all league ability.

2) Shame on you, Attez, for saying the one thing you miss about Octo.  He's a good kid and was a great friend to you and deserves better.

Not just the talent of the league, but the common courtesy of its players. Competition shouldn't get in the way of class.

Obviously it's different if it's a tourney like Columbus of COTUT, but if it's a group of guys who are friends, there's no excuse to not help them out (plus, while I'm sure it's fun to dominate in a video game, it should be better to play a competitive game)

Whatever, I haven't had his number since April (Which I imagine goes both ways), he knows that this forum is the only way to get in touch with me, and I was more than cordial to him in Columbus (at least I would imagine, I think he drove my car at one point to McDonald's).

JoeDirt

I'm just saying to reduce your entire friendship (which goes back to your childhood--in my mind, anyway) to the ONE thing that you miss is pretty sad.

I guess I could throw in kicking his ass at sports trivia on those touch screen games at shitty redneck bars,

It's not that there is something WRONG with playing that you can run the bases on overthrows, or double plays on infield flies. Especially if both people know before hand. To each his own, as long as they know what's going on. Of course, "Gentlemen's rules" are not really the issue here.

The issue if taking advantage of somebody who is on a lower skill level. I mean, if you are so far above other people that you can win 10-0 with Houston, you shouldn't need to take advantage of them not knowing how to cover home.
