Sometimes I wonder who Topps and Donruss had in their talent research department.  They rarely got one right.

Ah heck, I'll do one more. Chili Davis. One of Potsie's favorites I gather :^D

i love chili davis as much as the next man, but it appears he was not a topps rookie all star

chicobo329

He was too. For a peroid of time ('79-'86), Topps did not display the 'All Star Rookies' trophy on the card, but they still fielded All Star Rookie teams during this time.

topps "got" a lot more right because the rookie all stars were based on that season's stats.  i remember that damon berryhill and mark grace were rookie all stars in the 1989 set because they had the best seasons amongst rookies at catcher and first base.  their "future stars" were off base quite frequently though...i remember my brother and i crumpling up all the Steve Searcy future star cards we had.

the donruss rated rookies were always crapshoots, because it was all speculative.  at least with the rookie all stars, topps had some stats that they could fall back on.
